Urban, Diverse Areas Not Given Enough Voting Machines

TMZ, of all sites, has an interesting story up about a political saboteur telling Democrats in Deerfield Beach, Florida that they are supposed to vote at a different location.

Putting aside, for the moment the dirty tricks going on, there is another important nugget to glean from the story.

Nearly 400 people were firmly planted in line at 6:15 this morning, waiting for the polls to open at 7:00 AM. There is one voting machine to accommodate all of them.

This is a predominantly African-American community, with only one machine to punch in residents' votes.

Contrast that with an email we received from a voter near Columbus, Ohio, where, he says, historically very few people show up to vote. There were 14 voting machines on hand -- in this case, a needed amount for the influx of nearby college students showing up to the polls.

At 6:10 I was 31st in line. By the time the doors opened there were more than 100 in line. I am 57 years old and this is the first time there were more than 3 people present prior to the doors opening. Usually I am the first and only voter at opening. I finished voting by 7:00. The tech still had about 14 machines to start up and get running. About 60 people had voted and about 250 in line. The entire crowd was Students and people older than me. We're next door to [Ohio State University].

This problem is a constant gripe of Democrats: there is simply not a proper, proportional allocation of infrastructure to meet the needs of densely populated communities. Indeed, the Huffington Post has been getting tons emails from urban locales reporting a lack of machines, election workers and even ballots necessary to deal with the high turnout.

Makes you wonder if Bush ever really won an election.

No, it doesn't.

Because he didn't.

He must have won the election. He was President.

Now hang on a second. Don't get too carried away with outrage. I'm in Palm Beach County in a predominantly white district, heavily Republican (voted Obama, though!). We also had only one machine in our voting station -- we just have a decent number of voting stations in the county. Florida may yet prove to have screwed this all up, but not on the basis of this "one voting machine" business alone.

So major league baseball steroid investigations somehow trumped cleaning up our electoral process since 2004? Great job, congress.

Great point!

The US constitution gives the states responsibility for running elections not congress. If there are problems in a state blame the state.

Two things that must change tomorrow: fairness act and the shoddy voting machines.
God bless Barack Obama

Shame on us! Yes, we gotta get Congress on this IMMEDIATELY.

Congress should have been "on it" eight years ago. D o p e s.

You know...maybe a blessing in disguise if they would be forced to use Diebold... the Republican fraud-voter machines. It sounds like they had to use paper--maybe not such a bad thing. Still, it's racist disenfranchisement and a violation of civil rights, and people need to be prosecuted.
09:07 PM on 11/09/2008
The Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections is a Black Democrat (Dr Arthur Anderson) not Republican. The Palm Beach County Board of Supervisors who purchased the machines are also Democrats. If there is disenfranchisement then the Democrats in charge of Palm Beach County should be prosecuted. The Republicans had nothing to do with it.

This kind of disturbing voter disenfranchisement is really reflective of the systemic racist and classist oppression African Americans still face in the United States. In the San Elijo hills housing development in San Marcos CA, a mostly white upper middle class neighborhood with gates and all, they are actually split into multiple poling stations to make it that much easier for people living in the development to vote. This is not a city, its a housing development with multiple polling spots, over 20 machines and an average property value of over $600,000 maybe less with the way the economy is going. If money is dependant on race and buys your political legitimacy we live in a sorry, sorry state. Its embarrassing and disturbing.

Obama 08 for the worlds sake.

WHY? WHY? WHY!?! To disenfranchise African-American voters! Strategic, planned, heartless... a violation of civil rights. We need to start prosecuting and sealing the fate of every single one of these people who steal (or attempt to steal) signs or elections in this manner. We have had enough of this...send all who are responsible for this blatant, racist, violation of rights to prison and be done with it.

Contact the Black Democrat Supervisor of Elections...it was his responsibility.

HARSH justice...dispensed by the poor souls that had to wait in line to use this ONE machine. The Republicans cheat until it hurts, and they can no longer feel pain.

It is a calculation; I know black people are statistically-prone to high blood pressure and diabetes and people with these conditions have circulatory problems in their extremeties and the longer you can keep elderly black people on their feet the more likely it becomes that they will have to give up on waiting and go home.
