NOW President Questions Summers As Treasury Secretary

Since Barack Obama has signaled that his transition team will move quickly, it shouldn't come as a surprise that advocacy organizations are acting just as fast to register their opinions.

On Wednesday morning, National Organization for Women President Kim Gandy contacted the Huffington Post to describe her "mixed feelings" at the prospect of Larry Summers being on a rumored short list of contenders for Treasury secretary. Cautioning that the quickness of the group's decision to drop a hint about its concern over Summers was not a formal declaration of "opposition," Gandy nevertheless fleshed out a broad critique.

"It's very important that whoever is in key positions understands the importance of women to this economy -- and that the impact of wage inequality for women has bearing on the overall economic inequality in our society," she said. "I don't see [this] on the agendas of most of the candidates being suggested. While Larry Summers has talked about income inequality, he doesn't seem to get it that a lot of that is related to the wage gap between men and women."

The renowned economist served at Treasury toward the end of the Clinton administration, and was president of Harvard before a controversy over comments he made about women's aptitude in math and science drove him from that post. So far, no reporting has suggested that Obama has asked Summers about his willingness to serve at Treasury. Summers himself refused to speculate on the possibility at a conference last month.

NOW's president said the group was not speaking out about Summers solely because of the Harvard incident. "He certainly is considered to have enormous intellectual capacity on the subject [of the economy]. Though his past support for derivatives that seem to have plunged us into this [crisis] makes him perhaps not the best choice to get us out of that."

But on the topic of the old Harvard controversy, Gandy added: "I'm torn on the subject. Part of me thinks his opinions on women's capacities for math and science don't have relevancy to financial markets. On the other hand, economics is a very math-heavy field. Does that mean he'd be less likely to include women in his own circle of advisers? I don't know the answer to that question; I don't know him. But I do wonder whether if his comments about women's lack of aptitude for math and science had instead been a comment or an opinion about African Americans having less capacity for math and science, would he be on anybody's short-list. That's a fair question to ask."

Gandy noted some displeasure at not hearing prominent female economists like Laura D'Andrea Tyson or Sheila Bair mentioned for the job. "We're gonna be forwarding some names to the Obama transition team," she said. "It's important that in this new administration women's voices are heard and heeded."

The feminist group's president also joked that there was an internal discussion at NOW on Wednesday morning, regarding whether or not to send a signal about their Cabinet preferences so soon after Obama's election. "There is some hesitation. We asked, is this really what we want to do? This guy just got elected. But all signs are that he's going to move very very quickly to fill key posts," she said.

Since Barack Obama has signaled that his transition team will move quickly, it shouldn't come as a surprise that advocacy organizations are acting just as fast to register their opinions. On Wednesda...

If you are troubled by the thought of Larry Summers being further empowered as our Treasury Secretary, please sign this petition,

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/tell-obama-not-to-assign-summers-as-his-treasury-secretary#signatures

Or visit change.gov and send Barak Obama a message about your concerns. If Obama appoints this misogynist, it will be a slap in the face to the women who elected him to be our president. Our nation took a great stride forward last week. Let's keep it going in the right direction!

There are numerous reasons why Larry Summers has proven he would not be the best choice for our next Treasury Secretary. Here is just one more reason.

Harvard alum Iris Mack, MBA/PhD requested a meeting with Larry Summers to express her concerns about how her HMC boss Jeff Larson used derivatives to manage an HMC portfolio. Larson eventually left HMC to start Sowood hedge fund with hundreds of millions of dollars of Harvard alums' donations. Sowood was one of the first hedge funds to blow up during the subprime mortgage derivatives crisis.

Dr. Mack communicated with Summers' office regarding such derviatives trades. Perhaps, she could have saved Harvard alums hundreds of millions of dollars if Summers had bothered to continue to hear her out before forcing her resignation. There is a wealth of information describing this derivatives whistleblowing case: emails, faxes, snail mail, phone records; legal documents; FBI and DOJ interviews.

One must wonder whether Summers was either too
(a) corrupt and wanted to coverup up something(s) at HMC.
(b) arrogant to think that Dr. Mack had anything of value to tell him about mathematical finance and derivatives. Please she has a doctorate in Applied Mathematics from Harvard and anMBA from London Business School.
(c) incompetent to understand what Dr. Mack was trying to warn him about regarding derivatives trades in HMC portfolios.

Did Summers try to silence Dr. Mack the way he, Rubin and Greenspan tried to silence Attorney Brooksley Born of the CFTC?

Paul Krugman from Princeton U. would be a great choice!

Huge ditto for Paul Krugman. As a woman and as a feminist, the thought of Larry Summers makes me truly ill.

Paul Krugman is a brilliant economist. But he lacks the emotional intelligence to serve in a senior position in the administration. He simply lacks the temperament and diplomatic skill set necessary for such a leadership role. Krugman is just too petulant to be a statesman.

Huff Post, Ms. Gandy and NOW have short-sighted, singular agendas and many of which will have to take a back seat temporarily if we are to solve the crisis we are in. The extremes MUST meet. Summers tenure at Harvard has been reduced to a statement that serves their agenda..not to mention his economic conservatism. This is one time, I am thoroughly disgusted with Huff Post and their bias. They refuse to tell the whole story
I am a feminist, a pragmatic one, one who KNOWS the battle has moved and changed. I am thoroughly ashamed of feminists who insist on not seeing the whole picture, living in the past and fighting the fight as if they were in the 70's....and I am old enough to say I was there.

I assume you mean comments on his management style and interactions with other people by people who have worked with Summers. Here are a few articles that feature such comments:

Everyone has their own opinions on who Obama should pick, and it's clear that no matter who he picks for every position, there will be people who will complain...because they ALL have their own particular issues and agendas. Whomever he picks, I trust his judgement unless and until he proves us wrong. So far, his judgment and decisions have been right on.

Absolutely agree...Obama said he would entertain all voices. Summers has advised throughout this campaign...who was complaining then? How quickly we start the battles again.

WHERE IS THE QUOTE?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:29 PM on 11/06/2008

The quote is from a Jan. 2005 MIT forum on women in the sciences where Summers, then President of Harvard, said that the apucity of women in the hard sciences might be a reflection of their "intrinsic inaptitude". He subsequently received "lack of confidence" and censure votes by the Harvard faculty, and, ultimately, stepped down from his post in 2006. Need more?

He was speaking about this in a memo in terms of economic theory. The memo was used, again to SMEAR him.

He has some people in the GOP who want to discredit him. He can do a LOT of damage as a witness to Gramm's deregulation crimes--Enron and the whole housing industry collapse.

Furthermore, Bush is still in office--and what did he just do? He just rescinded a whole pile of consumer and environmental protections and what I read is that if what he wants passes it will be VERY DIFFICULT for Obama to undo.

And yet people think Larry Summers is the bad guy?

WRONG.

This is a smear from leftist feminists. I say get over it and look at the here and NOW (tehe), the urgency of our economic crisis ....and I am a feminist, but pragmatic.

OBAMA IS MORE THAN CAPABLE OF DECIDING THIS MATTER.

AND DO YOU THINK FOR ONE MINUTE HE WOULD CONSIDER SOMEONE WHO WAS IN ANY WAY BIGOTED AGAINST WOMEN?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:30 PM on 11/06/2008

No, but, I think the abrasive, offensive way he communicates with people, including Cornel West and other Harvard faculty, is. He has some good ideas, but doesn't need to be a Cabinet member again.

Summers is a geek, economic, brainiac nerd. He is not a polished politician...get over it. We need expertise on this one.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:28 AM on 11/07/2008

I did not know much about the guy but I am not impressed by somebody who makes judgement about others according to the supposedly size of their brain. This atavistic reasoning is sign of a flawed thinking process and is very dangerous. Does he belive in the curve bell theory too?

But what made me think this guy is really not fit for the job is this: "On December 12, 1991, while serving as chief economist for the World Bank, Summers authored a private memo arguing that the bank should actively encourage the dumping of toxic waste in developing countries, particularly "under populated countries in Africa," which Summers described as "UNDER-polluted." Summers added that public outrage over the heightened rates of prostate cancer caused by his proposed dumping would be mitigated by the fact that poor people in developing countries rarely live long enough to develop prostate cancer."

Charming, isn't it? This guy got no moral compass. I am sure better candidates exist and yes, now that somebody mention it, Krugman is one of them. Though more of an intellectual than a pragmatic, he did see it all coming, stayed the course against all odds and he is an outsider but with all the right connections. Interesting candidate. Anyhow - who could do worse than a Republican president anyway?!!!

Larry Gramm has an EXCELLENT "moral compass"!

Read what he did to try to stop the GOP from forcing low-income minorities into subprime mortgages and then get them kicked out of their homes!

Read what he says about building up the middle class!

Read up on what he says about "globalization".

I think it's good everybody is hoping Obama will raise the standards in Washington. But let's remember that perfection doesn't exist, and almost all candidates for all posts got a bad spot. So I think we should be realistic in that all the people he choses will not satisfy everyone. But I like the new trend I see - he's looking for competent and educated people who are good in their respective fields. That's good change.

LARRY SUMMERS IS EXTREMELY INTELLIGENT. AND, FURTHERMORE, HE TRIED TO STOP PHIL GRAMM FROM PASSING THE COMMODITIES FUTURES MODERNIZATION ACT WHICH CREATED THE ENRON LOOPHOLE AND THE CREDIT DEFAULT SWAPS (DERIVATIVES) THAT BROUGHT THE ECONOMY TO ITS KNEES.

HE WAS FOR---FOR--REGULATION AND TOLD GRAMM HE COULDN'T APPROVE HIS BILL WITHOUT IT SO GRAMM SNEAKED IT INTO CLINTON'S APPROPRIATIONS BILL AS AN AMENDMENT!!!!!

ALSO, LARRY SUMMERS IS FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS AND I POSTED A LINK WHERE YOU CAN READ ABOUT THAT AND ANOTHER LINK WHERE HE RECOMMENDED THAT INSTEAD OF THROWING PEOPLE OUT OF THEIR HOUSES AFTER GRAMM CAUSED THEIR BANKRUPTCIES THAT THE BANKS SHOULD WORK OUT A SETTLEMENT INSTEAD.

THE VULTURES WANTED MINORITIES IN SUBPRIME AND OTHER ROTTEN INVESTMENT VEHICLES BECAUSE THEY WERE PLACING BETS ON THEIR DEFAULTS AND THEIR BANKRUPTCIES! SO THEY WOULDN'T EVEN CONSIDER LETTING THESE PEOPLE DO A WORK-OUT ON THEIR MORTGAGES BECAUSE THEN THEY WOULDN'T MAKE MONEY ON THEIR BETS AND THEY WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO TAKE THESE PEOPLE'S HOUSES FROM THEM AND RENT THEM OUT OR SELL THEM AGAIN.

LARRY SUMMERS TOLD THEM THEY SHOULDN'T KICK THE PEOPLE OUT OF THEIR HOMES.

KRUGMAN IS RIGHT!!!! THEY ARE MONSTERS!!! AND PHIL GRAMM IS THE WORST OF THE WORST! HE SNUCK THAT LEGISLATION IN AFTER HE COULDN'T GET IT APPROVED AND CLINTON SIGNED THE APPROPRIATIONS BILL--AND IN THAT WAY THE REPUBLICANS COULD SAY HE WAS RESPONSIBLE!

THE DEMOCRATS TRIED TO GET GRAMM'S BILL REPEALED IN 2006-2007 BUT GOP FOUGHT THEM.

I PERSONALLY BELIEVE THAT "NOW" IS "QUESTIONABLE" ON THIS ISSUE OF LARRY GRAMM. EITHER KIM GANDY IS UP TO SOMETHING OR MISINFORMED.

Why isn't anyone talking about Krugman as secretary of treasury? When he was asked in the Clinton administration, he said no. But he is clearly a different person now (for example, after the publication of his book Conscience of a Liberal where he talks about his realization that the American success of the middle class was constructed by FDR's policies) and might well accept. He's a nobel laureate and even the right couldn't argue qualifications. But he's got the progressive chops and he'd actually make the bailout do the right thing.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:30 AM on 11/06/2008

I've been wondering the same thing. Krugman would be great since he wasn't part of any administration that promulgated the policies that have led to our current economic morass. Plus, that Nobel thing seems to me to be a pretty good credential. His commitment to the middle class rather than the money class seems like the perfect attitude to get us out of the hole we're in.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:43 AM on 11/06/2008

May be because Krugman (almost) endorsed Clinton during the primaries? Or may be not, since Rahm is now the chief-of-staff. I see how the far left has started to feel betrayed ... but you see Obama is not stupid. He knows what works. And for one, he is trying to appoint someone to the position of Treasury Secretary, not the Secretary of Women Studies. Wait, that does not exist, may be the far left can push for this new department to increase government size.

The issue is who has the best progressive values and the most intelligence and experience to tackle this and that would be Paul Volker...

So many others have been at the Goldman Sachs and Greenspan Courts and DID NOT INDICATE THAT THE KING WAS WEARING NO CLOTHES..

Rubin had the chance to support the health care reformation and if this had been done, we would have saved TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS in the last 10 - 14 years, but he was in Cahoots with GREENSPAN....and he did not support minimum wage increases etc...Robert Reich can probably say more about him...
