CHICAGO — Barack Obama began his first full day as president-elect with the simple pleasure of having breakfast with his daughters, the type of everyday family activity he often had to sacrifice during the long campaign.

Afterward, Obama left the house alone, clad in workout clothes, a ball cap and sunglasses, and spent an hour at a friend's apartment building, where he uses the gym. Then it was back home to clean up before heading to the office _ a downtown office building where he was holding a conference call to thank campaign staff around the country. The president-elect wore a suit but no tie, and carried a black satchel.

Asked how much sleep he'd gotten on the night of his historic victory, Obama told reporters: "Not as much as I'd like."

Obama planned to stay in Chicago through the week, with a quiet weekend at home. He was still trying to figure out arrangements regarding his grandmother, who died Sunday. A trip to Hawaii for the small private memorial she requested was likely by the end of the year.

Obama's staff said he would address the media by the end of the week, but Cabinet announcements were not planned that soon.

In addition to the many decisions he faces in getting the Obama administration up and running, he has personal decisions to be make, too. Such as when to move his family to Washington and where his 10- and 7-year-old daughters will go to school.

And then there was the matter of choosing the family pet. "Sasha and Malia, I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House," Obama told his daughters in his victory speech.

In a congratulatory call to Obama Tuesday night, President Bush pledged to make a smooth transition and extended an invitation to the Obama family to visit their new home at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

On Wednesday afternoon, Laura Bush and Michelle Obama spoke by telephone, and the first lady also invited her successor to visit the White House with her daughters, according to Michelle Obama's spokeswoman, Katie McCormick Lelyveld.

Lelyveld said a date for the visit would be set soon.

I was thinking the same thing. A baby boy for Barack and Michelle, conceived and born in the White House, would be fantastic. Not that those 2 extraordinary young ladies aren't enough to fill any parent's heart with unbounded love and pride, but a baby in the White House would be the icing on the cake.

What a man. What a family. Finally, a president with the attributes a president should have (brains, class, honesty....) Despite the problems this country and the world face, I think Barack is poised to be one of, if not "the," greatest presidents ever.

We can all dream, BadgerinNj, but then we have to get practical. Michelle is 44 years old. She is at a very high risk age where, if she becomes pregnant, chances are her baby will have a birth defect - such as Downs syndrome. why risk it?

And, in any event, she is on record as saying they have no plans to have any more babies. (i think she said this on Ellen or some other show like that during the campaign.)

But yeah, i agree with you. A Barack Obama Jr. would be schweeeet!

What? No tanning bed in his home? Works out at a friend's apartment gym?

The elitism.

A snoodle (poodle and schnauzer) two highly intelligent breeds, would be perfect for the girls. Their never larger than 11 lbs, don't shed, train overnight, love kids, always cuddle, and are very protective. It's going to be wonderful to see the girls with their puppy. They are the little princesses of America.

Should he really be walking around Chicago? I know he has secret service protection, but still...

Praying for you to stay safe, President Obama and your family too!

President -elect Obama gave a moving, if somewhat subdued, speech last night. I imagine that the moment was almost surreal in it's total awesomeness and I know that his victory was bitter sweet due to his grandmother's passing. I haven't seen anything about his sister. I would like to know how she is processing all of this and I hope that they can have a moment together soon if they haven't already.

I saw the same subdued-ness, but immediately caught on that he indeed has the weight of the world on his shoulders now; he more than anyone knows it and wants to do it right.

Loved the way he kept saying "yes we can" last night, not arousing as on the stump, but with growing movement as a refrain in a song to elevate and empower the nation he loves.

Ralph Nader: Will Barack Obama be a representation of Uncle Sam or Uncle Tom. This is unbelievable. Hats off the Shepard Smith for his public display of disgust regarding Nader's comment

Some people's comments don't even rise to the level of deserving a response. It's like arguing with some who's intellectually/mentally challenged -- pointless and even unnecessary.

Desperate Ralph is still seeking attention. No one cares about him or anything he has to say, hasn't he got it by now. He should just go away and take a nap. He may even remember to change that nasty suit he always wears. As far as Smith goes, again desperate, but I do like the idea of his public display of disgust for Ralph Nader.

Nader is 100% right on all the issues but that remark was unnecessary and disappoints me.

I love the fact that he kept his promise to his girls and the first thing he wants to do is get them their puppy. I remember when my parents got me and my sis our first pet. It's one of the fondest memories I have of my childhood. Seriously, this family is just incredible! My opinion, the girls should get whatever dog they want that will keep this smiling young faces beaming! LOL

"...Obama left the house alone,..." Just him and his Secret Service escort who blended into invisibility in the background. One good thing about being on the protection team for Obama, you likely won't have to spend much time working out. Obama moves pretty fast and those guys will have to give up any idea of powered donuts and coffee on their breaks.
