Barack Obama will be sworn in as president just days before the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth, and his inauguration theme will reflect the timing: "A New Birth Of Freedom," a phrase from the Gettysburg Address.

From Lincoln's speech:

The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

From the press release announcing the theme from Sen. Dianne Feinstein, chair of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies:

"A New Birth of Freedom" commemorates the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. The words come from the Gettysburg address, and express Lincoln's hope that the sacrifice of those who died to preserve the nation shall lead to "a new birth of freedom" for our nation.


The inaugural theme, which was selected by Senator Feinstein and the members of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, will be woven through the inaugural ceremonies. The theme is traditionally linked to a major anniversary, and in her announcement Senator Feinstein spoke of the appropriateness of the chosen theme to our present day circumstances, particularly in light of the historic election of Senator Barack Obama.

In addition to Senator Feinstein, the members of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies include: Senator Bob Bennett, Ranking Member of the Senate Rules Committee; Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid; Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi; House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer; and House Republican Leader John Boehner.

"At a time when our country faces major challenges at home and abroad, it is appropriate to revisit the words of President Lincoln, who strived to bring the nation together by appealing to 'the better angels of our nature'," Senator Feinstein said. "It is especially fitting to celebrate the words of Lincoln as we prepare to inaugurate the first African-American president of the United States."

"On January 20, as President-elect Obama takes the oath of office, he will look across the National Mall toward the Lincoln Memorial, where the sixteenth president's immortal words are inscribed. Although some inaugural traditions have changed since Lincoln's time, the swearing-in ceremony continues to symbolize the ideals of renewal, continuity, and unity that he so often expressed."

(1) He is to be the Commander in Chief.

(2) His troopes are at present facing a

ruthless and determined enemy.

(3) He cannot do like Bush in 2006 who on

01/20/2005 danced with his Oil Buddies in

the White House while the mothers of our

fallen warriors mourned!

He should not feats while our nations is at

war on three fronts.

He should invite the familes of the fallen

warriors to dine with him and his family on

inauguration day and eat the very same

food the soldiers are eating in the field

that day in the very same untensils they

are eating in and since there are children

in the White House no alcohol and drunks

should be there.

I'm a little concerned about this theme because if it's not handled carefully, it will not resonate with the rest of the world and repairing our image abroad is a significant concern. Why won't it resonate abroad? For 8 years the world has been hearing Dubya talk with astonishing simplemindedness about "freedom this", "freedom that" -- as if freedom is an unassailable absolute value. (Remember, Al Qaeda attacks because "they hate our freedom". Yeah, right.) Bush's simpleminded use of the term reflects the fact that in America we're taught to relate to "freedom" as an absolute value worth dying for no matter what the context. This seems natural enough to us because we see "freedom" through a uniquely American context. But that context-immigrant nation, 'huddled masses yearning to be free', protected by oceans, the country of manifest destiny and westward expansion--is unique to America. View the concept of freedom from, say, the Russian context: (Vast expanses of land, unprotected borders, invaded countless times, harsh, brutal winters, etc) and it looks quite different. In fact viewed from the Russian context, "freedom" can easily be seen as a value that should be subordinate to "security" because of the context. Anyway - Obama's communications team is brilliant, so having chosen a word that has been so badly overused and misused by Bush, I hope they use the opportunity to show that they understand "freedom" in a more nuanced way than the narrow and simpleminded way that Bush has used it.

Bush's propensity to repeat words without any solid basis in comprehension should not dictate or limit the rest of America in claiming unassailed rights to the use of the words. The words spoken by Abrahim Lincoln were both poetic and prophetic. Few people could argue over the substantive meaning of the words. When people hear Obama speak, it is more likely they relate it to something spoken by a learned person than by George W. Bush. It is doubtful that people put much meaning into the words that he spoke because it was so obvious that he was merely reading what someone else wrote for him to say without any particular depth of thought. Each time he read a sentence and completed it, he would get that akward smile as if to say "wow, I made it through another sentence!" When Obama speaks it seems as though he actually understands not just the meaning of the words he uses but the true power of words themselves.

I think the words aren't important, but rather who says them, how he says them, and why he says them. The world will understand that discussion of freedom from Obama's mouth is 180 degrees different from Bush reading the word from a telemprompter.

I voted for Obama. I hope the committee tones down the expense of the inauguration. I don't know who pays for the event (DNC?) but in these hard times the committe should pay attention to the events expenses. It is a joyful time and Obama should not be deined, but the DEMS will be critized for spending alot of money

The public pays for the inaugural ceremonies and private funds are raised for the inaugural balls. There is the swearing in ceremony at the capitol, then the inaugural address, the lunch with both houses of congress and then the parade to the White House. Before and after the inaugural ceremonies there are these inaugural balls. Those cost anywhere fro $20 million to $30 million (Bush and Cheney spent $40 million for the second term). The money comes from corporations and individuals. During the first Roosevelt administration, he held only on ball and then got down to the business of saving the country. He did not have any of these parties for the subsequent inaugurations.

I like the majority of supporters are very excited and see promise in O to do the right thing. Campaigned and all. I'd rather choose smart anyday. But some of the posts are getting a lil scary. Obama is a smart intellectual who I think will do well as a President. But some folks are putting WAY too much stock in him and I suggest folks get this in proper perspective. He is a infallible human being who happens to be multi-racial, and the first AA president. Reading some of these posts, sounds like the 2nd coming of Christ or something close to it. This is counter productive, dangerous and unrealistic. I also, feel a sadness for his Presidency. I think more folks are going to pile on expectations he can't meet, even in his first term. Folks will have amnesia and he will serve under a unwarranted microscope. I often think, the campaign funding by Americans might prove to be worse than the lobbyists in the long run. Already, he is getting blamed for the Yes on Prop A and AA's which if you did the math percentage wise, majority of white Republicans had this not passing. This is the start, and my goodness the inauguration is not even here yet! Time will only tell how long this ride lasts.

Obama tells us, it will not be easy. It will not happen soon, perhaps not in 4 years. We are in a deep hole. I think we project our utopian dreams into what he's says. But he gives us the truth.

This prop 8 will eventually be overturned. I am thinking we can take a lesson from his campaign, and Martin Luther King. Knock on doors and in a very, very positive way, explain to people one at a time. riots and anger, won't do it. Have peaceful marches, this seems to work.

I heard Arnold Swarchenager(?) speak on Meet the Press. He is in support of gay marriage and very disappointed 8 passed. He is confident gay marriage will some day happen, a surprising source of encouragement.

Mmm! Too bad Obama doesn't know his histoy well b/c Abe Lincoln verbalized that he 'strongly felt the freedmen would never be equal to Whites', while he considered making Nebraska a state for the freedmen.

Abraham Lincoln said a lot of things, but that doesn't diminish the inspirational rhetoric and heroic deeds attributed to him. I seriously doubt that Obama is unaware of the history surrounding the preservation of the United States.

The dweebs have already started up on facebook with "impeach Obama" sites. They are still crying "socialism, communism" and the like. This is what Republican devisive politics breeds. I hope John McCain gets a very COLD SHOULDER when he returns to the Senate. He has dishonored himself and his country.

My my, and Obama isnt even president yet.

BTW.... he can still lose. Legally the electors in many states do not have to vote for the candidate that won the election in that state. Strictly in terms of numbers I dont know how many states that Obama won have laws requiring electors to vote for its winner. California does for example. Actually I am surprised there hasnt been a movement to influence the electors. Then again, maybe there is.

Feb. 12, 2009 will be Lincoln's 200th birthday. I share a birthday with Lincoln. I'm already starting to reflect on what I've done in my 30 some odd years in this world...
