The reaction of the world's newspapers - from India to Italy - to Barack Obama's victory was largely jubilant.

There were a few exceptions: Iran's conservative newspaper, Jam-e-Jam, featured a foreboding photo of Obama with his back turned. And Italy's Libero featured a crude caricature of Obama with extra-large lips.

Watch a slideshow of front pages from a selection of the world's newspapers:

Isn't it ironic, that the world received this news and went bonkers; and that they are hopeful and more trustful of the US because he is a BLACK man?

The Dinamalar(India) translation: Incase no one has translated this yet:
This is a language (tamil) spoken in Southern India. The red, white and Blue is "OBAMA" and the captions next to the name read " The next President of America, Obama. Huge victory for him and Bush"s party has taken a massive blow".

Pardon, and the headline (from the Turkish paper) is "Global Hope"

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:13 AM on 11/08/2008

I can at least provide insight on 1 of the covers: From the Turkish cover:

From the 4 corners of the globe, those tired of Bush's 8 years of war and economic crisis welcomed the "Change" talking Obama with joy...

About Michelle Obama: "A strong and chic first lady"

"His first message is for peace"

"A 389-year-long dream" (tracing Obama's path to the White House starting with slavery, I imagine)

"As the world sighed with relief..."

Here's a link of all of the worlds newspapers. Some are not translated. It looks to be over 100 or more front page headlines on Barack from all over the world. Click the thumbnail for each newspaper to enlarge.

That was Spain, and they also painted their face black for the Formula 1 car race, to mock the first black champion Lewis Hamilton.

Who knows what goes on in the warped mind of an Iranian newspaper editor, under the Islamic rule¦

Showing Obama"s back of the head, with the heading "Head of the Black Revolution in the White House".

What's with the Iranian paper?

I've been told that the headline makes a play of words with "White "House "headed" by a "black" man - and the photograph would have less of an impact if it had eyes, nose, mouth, etc. That is why there's the "head" without the distractions of personal features - i.e. the back of the head.

No, some Italians ARE pretty nasty. (I'm Italian, and I know these people, both here and over there.) There are lots who are very progressive and learned a thing or two from the experience of WWII, and tired of the influence of the neofascists, the church, the Mafia, and the rampant corruption. On the other hand there are lots who are too distracted by soccer and consumer culture and low-budget variety shows with half-naked dancing girls, and who never bothered to educate themselves enough to join the modern world. As a country they have identity issues (North vs. South, Renaissance men vs. bone-headed peasants) and something of an inferiority crisis compared to the rest of Europe. They also have a HUGE immigrant crisis that makes the one in the US look like a schoolyard spat.

So what you're seeing on that newspaper is kind of like the Italian version of Southern rednecks mocking minorities here, or Fox News calling Michelle a "baby-mama." It's no accident that Howard Beach happened where it did - for a lot of my early adulthood when I finally got away from these people, I was almost ashamed to identify as an Italian.

Berlusconi is not the Italian President...he's the Prime Minister.

There are two Italian papers, one with the ugly cartoon, the other good. So you can't judge all Italians like that.

would've helped if you had translated the covers, does not help much photo without words on a newspaper.
