Bill Ayers Tells His Side: 'A Bit Surreal'

Bill Ayers, who stayed quiet throughout the presidential campaign even as he became its central lightning rod, finally broke his silence on Election Day, discussing his experience with a few reporters who knocked on his Hyde Park door.

On Friday, Ayers wrote about his "surreal" year in In These Times.

"Whew! What was all that mess? I'm still in a daze, sorting it all out, decompressing," Ayers begins.

He charges Hillary Clinton's campaign with laying the groundwork for the attacks that would become central to John McCain's campaign:

Sen. Hillary Clinton's (D-N.Y.) campaign provided the script, which included guilt by association, demonization of people Obama knew (or might have known), creepy questions about his background and dark hints about hidden secrets yet to be uncovered.

McCain, Ayers writes, "immediately got on message" about him after an interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News, but it was Sarah Palin who took it "viral":

When Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin got hold of it, the attack went viral. At a now-famous Oct. 4 rally, she said Obama was "pallin' around with terrorists." (I pictured us sharing a milkshake with two straws.)

The crowd began chanting, "Kill him!" "Kill him!" It was downhill from there.

Ayers sees the 2008 campaign attacks in the context of the 1960s:

The idea that the 2008 election may be the last time in American political life that the '60s plays any role whatsoever is a mixed blessing. On the one hand, let's get over the nostalgia and move on. On the other, the lessons we might have learned from the black freedom movement and from the resistance against the Vietnam War have never been learned. To achieve this would require that we face history fully and honestly, something this nation has never done.

Ayers cites Studs Terkel's Huffington Post interview with Edward Lifson, in which Terkel described Palin as "Joe McCarthy in drag," to support his point that McCain and Palin saw this campaign as an opportunity to "bury" the mores of the '60s:

The '60s pushed us to a deeper appreciation of the humanity of every human being. And that is the threat it poses to the right wing, hence the attacks and all the guilt by association.

McCain and Palin demanded to "know the full extent" of the Obama-Ayers "relationship" so that they can know if Obama, as Palin put it, "is telling the truth to the American people or not."

This is just plain stupid.

Obama has continually been asked to defend something that ought to be at democracy's heart: the importance of talking to as many people as possible in this complicated and wildly diverse society, of listening with the possibility of learning something new, and of speaking with the possibility of persuading or influencing others.

The McCain-Palin attacks not only involved guilt by association, they also assumed that one must apply a political litmus test to begin a conversation.

Bill Ayers was, long ago, an unashamed member of a radical political organization.
Yes, he participated in bombings-
Yes, he was a fugitive for many, many years, together with his wife, Bernardine, a fellow member of the Weather Underground.
The two turned themselves in in 1980, BEFORE the deadly robbery of a Brinks truck was carried out by other former members of the Weather Underground... Ayers and his wife had NO ROLE in that shameful act. (Though they did raise the child of those convicted- sparing that child from being trapped in the foster system)
Ayers damaged *property*, he never killed anyone.
Due to misconduct on the part of the FBI, charges were dismissed, and his life since that time has been productive, useful and community-centered.
While it is true that Mr. Ayers has never repudiated his past, he has repeatedly expressed sincere regret that violence seemed a neccessity in a desperate struggle to protest what he believed (and still believes) was an unconcionable situation. (The Vietnam war).
Everyone who is so ready to lynch the man really needs to brush up on the FACTS, then form an opinion.

I am so glad that Ayers has finally spoken about his 'use' in the campaign. As he stated, Hillary Clinton began the Ayers Crusade and the Mac and Palin, having no real platform, continued. My dream for the future under President Barack Obama is a coming to grips with America's past. Another ideal would be to refer to all as AMERICANS - not to be designated as African-American, Asian-American, etc. Under Obama we should be a unified country. This is our window of opportunity.

Thank you Mr. Ayers. The fact that Palin could even talk about you being un-american when her own husband has been a member of a party that doesn't even want to be a part of America is incredible. Even more incredible is the fact that this was a non issue in the campaign. This fact only supports my theory that the people yelling 'kill him' as Palin read her lines, were lingering racist who would rather have an inexperienced, incapable fruitcake a heartbeat away from the presidency then have an educated capable man of color as president. I am so glad that the people who came out to support Palin are now considered a small sector of America. Her and Mccain were playing the race card; but doing it in a secretive way--using code words to stir the fear in those who would listen. Thank God this election is over. The pundits keep talking about Palin in 2012; my question is what can she learn in 4 years that would make her qualified to be president that she hasn't learned in 44 yrs.

Thank you Professor Ayers. I am so pleased to see your fine piece getting wider distribution and I hope what you have done here will open an expanded dialogue. So many citizens, our President-Elect included, have no direct experience of the triumphs and tragedies of the Civil Rights and Anti-War movements " simply called "The Movement" back then. How was it that so many found the courage to take action against injustices and obscene policies, risking physical danger and social ostracism on a scale incomprehensible today? The challenges we face today are just as great, although perhaps more subtle. We need to help our new President attack them by joining a new movement of hope and action, fueled by practical passion, self-sacrifice and courage. That movement will need to understand as much as possible about the 60s and apply and advance the era"s positive lessons. Obama knows that well; his campaign was guided by the vision and methods of another 60s luminary, Saul Alinsky, the father of modern community organizing.

I think it was just plain stupid for Palin to use Ayers as a ploy against Obama...when she didn't know all the facts. Her tactics were shady and it backfired.

Personally, I would love to see Mr. Obama thumb his nose at the right wingnut crazies by appointing Dr. Ayers Secretary of Education, a post for which is eminently qualified.

That would be fantastic, actually.

Ayers has proven his ability when it comes to Education. I have always been upset about this whole thing, and how people are overlooking the fact that the man rehabilitated (which is what we CLAIM we want people to do in this society) and has become one of the country's foremost advocates for progressive education.

What we fail to understand is Mr. Ayers was NEVER convicted of anything and didn't even go to trial for anything. So, he was being accused of his associations also it seems. The point is ANYBODY CAN CHANGE. If we all stayed the way we were when we were teenagers, we would be a very erratic bunch of adults right now. Thank goodness we grow and mature.

Premeditated killers are not redeemable. This guy chooses to go outside of our system of politics and kill people in order to gain power for his politic pov. I ask everyone willing to accept Ayers in any way, would you support this heinous approach by those who oppose your politics?

Suspension of habeas corpus, rendition and waterboarding, a preemptive trillion dollar war predicated on made up lies that has resulted in over 4,000 Americans killed with 35,000 casualtes and estimated over 280,000 Iraquis killed, rampant and repugnant deregulation that has brought the financial system to its knees, Bin Laden ashes not in an urn, zero progress on climate change or our national energy needs, almost as many mercenaries in Iraq as regular military and the backdoor draft of sending the same soldiers for multiple combat tours in a normal enlistment. The sum total of all that Republicans have wrought on America is still unknown. You asked who would support heinous acts from those opposed to your politics. Well, we lived under just the last 8 years. Repudiated on Tuesday, absolutely. But what our gov as done to its citizens tops Ayers by a factor of 10,000. Making him an issue was pure evil trying to hold power, and an inability for that evil to look in a mirror.

Ayers' bombs didn't hurt anyone much less kill them. Ayers targeted government property. He can't be responsible for what a rogue element in his group does. Are all Americans responsible for George Bush starting a war under false pretenses?

Lying for the GOP and their supporters is like breathing.

He killed nobody. His bombs were never intended for the purpose of harming anyone and were set off when buildings had been vacated. If anything, he was a vandal.

The only people who died were members of the Weather Underground who accidentally killed themselves.

I'm not defending what he did because it wasn't right but your accusation is false.

I would never accept his methods. However, you have to remember that this happened years ago. It is not forgotten or forgiven. He is, though, obviously a more mature person.

The proof is in the pudding. He is obviously nonviolent and working through other methods now, for decades.

If you read his history, it's true what he says--that he went around trying to bomb buildings, not people. The facts are that his group announced the date and time they would bomb a building, which gave plenty of time for a building to be cleared of people.

Bill Ayers was named citizen of the year a few years ago here in Chicago. The good work he and his wife have done here in Chicago is massive. The rethugs should be ashamed of themselves, but of course they won't be.

I think that says more about Chicago than it does Ayers.

Come on. Even though his actions, decades ago, were reprehensible. That doesn't mean he hasn't done anything good since.

This is a reaction out of ignorance not an intelligent response. You know nothing about anything but you give a stereotypical response to events you probably can't even explain.
