WASHINGTON — The nation's unemployment rate bolted to a 14-year high of 6.5 percent in October as another 240,000 jobs were cut, far worse than economists expected and stark proof the economy is deteriorating at an alarmingly rapid pace.

The new snapshot, released Friday by the Labor Department, showed the crucial jobs market quickly eroding. The jobless rate zoomed to 6.5 percent in October from 6.1 percent in September, matching the rate in March 1994.

Unemployment has now surpassed the high seen after the last recession in 2001. The jobless rate peaked at 6.3 percent in June 2003.

October's decline marked the 10th straight month of payroll reductions, and government revisions showed that job losses in August and September turned out to be much deeper. Employers cut 127,000 positions in August, compared with 73,000 previously reported. A whopping 284,000 jobs were axed in September, compared with the 159,000 jobs first reported.

So far this year, a staggering 1.2 million jobs have disappeared. Over half of the decrease occurred in the past three months alone.

Although the unemployment report was worse than expected, and Ford Motor Co. reported dismal third-quarter results and announced plans to cut more than 2,000 additional white-collar jobs, Wall Street investors appeared to take it all in stride. The Dow Jones industrial average was up more than 190 points in morning trading.

About 10.1 million people were unemployed in October, an increase of 2.8 million over the past year. A year ago, the unemployment rate stood at 4.8 percent.

President Bush said the dismal employment figures reflect "the difficult challenges confronting the economy" and urged the country to have patience, saying a flurry of unprecedented government measures _ including a $700 billion financial bailout package _ will take time to work.

Story continues below

"I understand that Americans deeply concerned about the challenges facing our economy, but our economy has overcome great challenges before, and we can be confident that it will do so again," Bush said.

The employment market is much weaker than economists expected. They were forecasting the unemployment rate to climb to 6.3 percent in October and for payrolls to fall by around 200,000.

"The U.S. recession is deepening," said Michael Gregory, economist at BMO Capital Markets Economics. The final quarter of this year is getting off to a "particularly ugly" start, he said.

Job losses were widespread, reflecting the mounting carnage from a trio of crises _ housing, credit and financial.

Factories cut 90,000 jobs, the most since July 2003. Construction companies got rid of 49,000 jobs with heavy losses in home building. Retailers cut payrolls by 38,000. Professional and business services reduced employment by 45,000. Financial activities cut 24,000 jobs, with heavy losses in mortgage banking and at securities firms. Leisure and hospitality axed 16,000 positions.

All those losses more than swamped some gains elsewhere, including in the government, as well as in education and health care.

Racing to assemble his new Democratic Cabinet, President-elect Barack Obama will huddle with economic advisers later on Friday. His team has been in close contact with the Bush administration to pave the way for a smooth hand-off of power.

All the economy's woes _ a housing collapse, mounting foreclosures, hard-to-get credit and financial market upheaval _ will confront Obama when he assumes office early next year. And, the employment situation is likely to get worse.

Many expect the jobless rate to climb to 8 percent, possibly higher, next year. In the 1980-1982 recession, the unemployment rate rose as high as 10.8 percent before inching down.

The grim numbers spurred calls from Democrats on Capitol Hill to provide fresh relief. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Democrats, in a lame-duck session later this month, will push to enact another round of economic stimulus of around $100 billion, possibly including provisions to create jobs through big public works projects.

White House press secretary Dana Perino appeared to suggest that additional action may not be needed.

"Today's employment numbers are a stark reminder of how critical it is we keep focused on utilizing the tools we now have to return our country to the strong job creation we had in recent years," Perino said. "We know what the main problems are tight credit and housing markets and we have the tools to solve them."

Workers with jobs saw only modest wages gains. Average hourly earnings rose to $18.21 in October, a 0.2 percent increase from the previous month. Over the past year, wages have grown 3.5 percent, but paychecks aren't stretching that far because high food, energy and other prices has propelled overall inflation at a faster pace.

To prevent the country from sinking into a deep and painful recession, the Federal Reserve last week ratcheted down interest rates to 1 percent and left the door open to further reductions.

The economy has lost its footing in just a few months. It contracted at a 0.3 percent pace in the July-September quarter, signaling the onset of a likely recession. It was the worst showing since 2001 recession, and reflected a massive pullback by consumers.

As U.S. consumers watch jobs disappear, they'll probably retrench even further, spelling more trouble for the sinking economy.

That's why analysts predict the economy is still shrinking in the current October-December quarter and will contract further in the first quarter of next year. All that more than fulfills a classic definition of a recession: two straight quarters of contracting economic activity.

My niece just bought a new car today....

A lot of people are still working...Teachers...medical....of course Lawyers and politicians.
lawn service....snow removal....nursing homes and hospitals....insurance co.
roofers (due to weather damage) janitors...window washers...police and firemen.
and the list goes on. The blue collar workers are the ones out of work and need to
take classes and learn new technology for future jobs in solar and wind etc.
Also, to replace people who are retiring......Get innovative and think positive.
Factories have been closing since early 80's in some areas.

Did GM and Ford give money to the Govt, when they made all their profits.....

Funny that now all the banks and auto mfr. etc. don't have money since they heard that the
Govt. was giving money away.

How about giving each state a billion out of that and let them put people to work and pay them for
things that need to be done.

The U.S. will not last long on a service sector economy consisting of hamburger flippers...janitors...pizza delivery boys...teachers...doctors...lawyers...police and firemen. If the U.S. continues to manufacture almost nothing for export and domestic consumption in the way of tangible goods, it has created no real wealth since wealth lies in productive capacity -- not in services. What we then can expect to see is the U.S. ranked highest among Third World countries!

Unfortunately, our unemployment rate is actually higher and the reason being is the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has changed the technique it uses to measure the unemployed. Actually, more than 10 percent of American workers are essentially not contributing full-time to their families' well-being and to that of the economy at large because of the underutilized worker. If we were to use the same measuring techniques the Bureau of Labor Statistics used prior to 1994 when it changed the way it measures unemployment the unemployment rate would be higher. Since 1994, the BLS has been compiling alternative measures of labor under-utilization (actual stats http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t12.htm).

There are many different varieties of labor under-utilization for instance marginally attached workers: "persons who currently are neither working nor looking for work but indicate that they want and are available for a job and have looked for work sometime in the recent past."

Discouraged workers, a subset of the marginally attached crowd, who have "given a job-market related reason for not looking currently for a job." There are people who work part-time because they "can't find" or their employer "can't provide" full-time work. There are many people who have left the work force entirely. Neither the unemployment rate nor the payroll jobs figure captures the plight of many of these folks.

Anybody signing up for unemployment should be asked if they voted McCain/Palin. If so, they should be told thanks, but no thanks since you don't believe in socialism. Every man for himself, remember? Heard one of the biggest republicans on tv(Dr. Phil) lament that there weren't many programs available to help young pregnant teens in distress. In a republican administration, I wonder why? In the coming years, we ALL are going to have to help one another at some point . Even if President Obama does all the right things, we're still years away from seeing a turnaround.

There is a flip side to that. We have a small cafe inside the building where I work where more than a few of the staff members were huge Obama supporters. The people in my office have started to tip them a lot less and instead hand their tips to a pan-handler guy who sits near the corner of the West parking lot. Someone got the idea from a chain email that was floating around. The look on their face when they see their tip walk out the door is priceless.

What people like those supporters fail to understand is socialism is designed to hurt one party and help another party. The President of the company I work for purchased that building and provides every person that works there a job. The cafe was opened to give employees a place for lunch, and each cafe worker is there and has a job because of that.

So, remember that the next time someone tells you how great socialism is.

Ah, yes. The small minds come out. By your own statements, you take delight in the cafeteria workers dilemma. That is the kind of human we do not need. Spiteful, are you not? I do make a suggestion you can take back to your co-workers. Instead of tipping the pan-handler, why don't you set an excellent example for your co-workers and bring the "pan-handler" some food. I actually discourage handing out coins and private corporate "Federal Reserve Notes" to "pan-handlers".

And another thing. We are not living in The Cold War. The Red Scare is over. Americans need to realize this. Thanks to the private corporate HMO tax, Americans rank pretty low on our ability to provide quality, preventative health care. Yeah, hmmmm... paying taxes to private corporations to provide substandard health care in which, if some accountant deems it is too expensive for the corporation, you die.

Some sectors of the economy should be socialist, others left to capitalism. Socialism is where everyone helps everyone. Capitalism is exploitation for the shareholder. And sometimes, there should be a mix.

So, good luck, Citizen. Hope you don't lose your house to the bankers.

I wonder what the "real" unemployment numbers are. I strongly suspect that there are millions not being counted --- including 1099 workers , under-employed , unemployed who's benefits have run out and the ones that have stopped looking altogether.

Do not take my word on this. Please read about the Depression. Wall Street is down 35%. Nasdaq is down 48%, S&P is down 39%. This is almost exactly what happened during the crash of 29-32. However, with todays speed of transactions the bottom will happen sooner then later. Get your money out now. It took 3 years for the Market to loose 85% of its value. It will not take that long this time around due to computerized market selling. Once GM, Ford and Chrysler file for bankcruptcy these job losses will seem like small potatoes. Obama is a brilliant man, but he is inheriting an economy that the republicans deliberately created to fail. Remember the republican mantra of "government is not the solution, it is the problem" mentality. Well, they have almost destroyed the government and it will take a lot of hard work to rebuild. This was not the act of incompentence, it was deliberate.

The Republicans did not create this. Seems there was cooperation among the two wings of The Party of Property in producing this financial nightmare. Who signed into law the Gramm-Leahy Act? Anyone?

And do not think for one moment that The Secretary of Treasury, Bernanke, and Greenspan did not suspect or know the outcome of their actions. History repeats. They knew. And helped facilitate these financial weapons of mass destruction knowing full well what, probably, would happen.

It is called a transfer of wealth. The Money Trust just funded the front men.

The recession that Clinton inherited was set into motion by Reagan's supply side economics and furthered by Bush senior. The economy tanked in 1991 when Bush senior was in office and unemployment peaked during Clinton's second year. So once again a Democrat will have to undo the damage done by a corrupt Republican Administration.

Clinton not only balanced the budget but left a surplus...which Bush spent. Bush squandered a lot of what was put in place by the Clintons just because he could.

Recessions are cyclical and always happen at some point. The economic boom under Reagan was the longest in the history of the United States to that point. Since Reagan's policies went into affect in 1982, there have been only two short and shallow recessions since. In contract, there were four recessions in the 12 years prior to that (1970,1974-75, 1980, 1982).

The truth is, we are all under the bus. And pretty mangled by the tires. And the drivers in our government, corporations, etc... did not even think about the break pedal. However, the recession will be good for the survivors (and I don't mean you, worker-slaves). Why?

More unemployed means that corporations will be able to offer you the same jobs at lower pay. How many people will be competing for the few jobs that come open in the future? Their choices just increased by a few million. This gives them leverage in telling you how much they will pay you. Or, there are one hundred other wage-slaves, indebted to the system, waiting right behind you in line for that one job opening.

As a moderate libertarian independent, I can assure you that, when faced with an employment blacklist run by a real estate shark, I did not spend the unemployment period from 1998 to 2004 on welfare. I started a small business with no capital and little inventory, kept at it, and managed survival for the period. Unfortunately, the rest of you now are about to be in the same economic situation I was, and the resale and eBay markets to whom I sold are near-zero at the moment.
Survival trumps politics, and all politicians are sharks. When the dollar is strong and every other segment of the economy is weak, I suspect a cultivated recession induced so that assets can be transferred from the middle class to someone who needs to launder big money.

I think Obama need to include Krugman or Roubini or other voices of doom among his advisors. I know Krugman said nasty things during the primary, but it's time to get over it.
I think he's right that more money need to be spent directly by gov thru infrastructure and handouts to local govts rather than by tax cuts.
