CHICAGO — Inheriting an economy in peril, President-elect Obama warned on Friday that the nation faces the challenge of a lifetime and pledged he would act urgently to help Americans devastated by lost jobs, disappearing savings and homes seized in foreclosure. But the man who promised change cautioned against hopes of quick solutions.

"It is not going to be easy for us to dig ourselves out of the hole that we are in," Obama said at his first news conference since winning the presidency on Tuesday.

The No. 1 priority, Obama said, is to get Congress to approve an economic stimulus plan that would extend jobless benefits, send food aid to the poor, dispatch Medicaid funds to states and spend tens of billions of dollars on public works projects. If the plan is not approved this month, in a special session of Congress, Obama said that "it will be the first thing I get done as president of the United States."

In his first appearance since a jubilant election-night celebration, Obama sought to project an air of calm and reassurance to a deeply worried nation. He stood in a presidential-like setting with an array of eight American flags and a lectern showing a presidential seal above the words "The Office of the President Elect." The stage behind him was lined with advisers he had summoned, his economic brain trust.

Almost 20 minutes late to his first meeting with reporters, Obama spoke for just 20 minutes and broke no ground with new policy announcements or disclosures of who would be in his Cabinet. In lighthearted moments, he joked about seances with dead presidents and the appeal of animal shelter dogs that are "mutts like me."

Constrained by the fact he will not take office until Jan. 20, Obama deferred to President Bush and his economic team on major decisions. "The United States has only one government and one president at a time," he said.

Declaring he would not respond to issues "in a knee-jerk fashion," Obama declined to say how he would deal with Iran, whose president sent a letter of congratulations to Obama. "I want to be very careful that we are sending the right signals to the world as a whole that I am not the president and I won't be until January 20th," he said.

A new jobless report offered no comfort. The unemployment rate climbed to a 14-year high in October, and 10.1 million people were out of work. In Detroit, General Motors reported a huge third-quarter loss and said it may run out of cash next year. Ford planned more job cuts after burning through billions of dollars of its own.

While standing back as long as Bush is president, Obama said his advisers would keep close watch on the administration's efforts to unlock frozen credit and stabilize financial markets. Obama said he wanted to make sure the Bush administration was "protecting taxpayers, helping homeowners and not unduly rewarding the management of financial firms that are receiving government assistance."

Obama spoke after he and Vice President-elect Joe Biden met privately with economic advisers to discuss ways to stabilize the economy.

"We are facing the greatest economic challenge of our lifetime, and we're going to have to act swiftly to resolve it," Obama said.

He said he was confident that "a new president can have an enormous impact," but he tempered that optimism by adding, "I do not underestimate the enormity of the task that lies ahead."

"Immediately after I become president, I will confront this economic challenge head-on by taking all necessary steps to ease the credit crisis, help hardworking families, and restore growth and prosperity," Obama said.

"Some of the choices that we're going to make are going to be difficult," he said. "It is not going to be quick. It's not going to be easy for us to dig ourselves out of the hole that we are in." But he said he was confident the country could do it.

Obama left the door open to the possibility that economic conditions might prompt him to change his tax plan that would give a break to most families but raise taxes on those making more than $250,000 annually.

"I think that the plan that we've put forward is the right one, but obviously over the next several weeks and months, we're going to be continuing to take a look at the data and see what's taking place in the economy as a whole," Obama said.

Democratic congressional leaders want to pass a broad economic aid package in a postelection session later this month, but prospects appear dim because of Bush's opposition.

Rep. Steny H. Hoyer, D-Md., the majority leader, said the House wouldn't reconvene for a postelection session unless Bush did an about-face and drops his opposition. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., isn't sure such a package could get through the Senate either, he added.

"Clearly there's no point in us doing something if the administration's going to take a position that they're not going to sign something," Hoyer said.

If Congress and Bush can't come to terms on a stimulus bill this fall, lawmakers have spoken with Obama's team about a Plan B: The new Congress could quickly pass an economic aid package when it reconvenes in early January, readying it for Obama's signature as his first official act after being inaugurated, Democratic leadership aides said.

That measure would probably be just the first installment of a broader package, including a middle class tax cut, that Congress could pass separately after Obama is in the White House.

Democrats will have the power to get much legislation through, and I hope that they could keep these words of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison in mind:

"To take from one because it is thought that his own industry and that of his father's has acquired too much, in order to spare to others, who, or whose fathers have not exercised equal industry and skill, is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association--'the guarantee to everyone of a free exercise of his industry and the fruits acquired by it". Alexander Hamilton

"Government is instituted to protect property of every sort...This being the end of government, that alone is a just government, which impartially secures to every man, whatever is his own." James Madison

And

"...a man's land, or merchandize, or money is called his property." Madison

All valid points, but someone has to pay for the things we collectively enjoy... unless you have a better idea.

What really scares me is how people treat him like some sort of savior. He is just a man and I hope he does well, but this reaching to the heavens and praising God for Obama is really creepy. I'm curious on what happens if he does screw up. Will people turn on him or just keep blaming Bush.

MR OBAMA... (hope I got your attention or one of your staff) - how about in your Work's Projects, you start by eliminating CREDIT CHECKS for those of us who would like to get our lives back...now that we've lost our homes, our jobs, our credit ...thanks to Big Business and a Federal Government Policy put into operation by Republican Administrations... I'm a U.S. Veteran, fully qualified by education, experience, skill and willingness to work... regulated now to low paying jobs because CREDIT which has absolutely NOTHING to do with my skills or experience or ability to do a job well - is now a prerequisite to being hired in any substantial job ..and the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT is leading the way in this DISCRIMINATORY PRACTICE.. a lot of good, honest American's need this Right Wing Policy Fixed!

I strongly suggest that President-elect Obama include Rep. Ron Paul in any discussion of economic matters. Rep. Paul has been a student of the Austrian school of economics all of his adult life and is supremely knowledgeable of economic REALITY. He would present an alternative view to Keynesian policies that have gotten us into this mess to begin with.

I agree, acudoc.

Unfortunately, you will find that people here hate fiscal responsibility and have an unwavering dedication to Keynesian economics. They don't realize that the US is BANKRUPT and the US dollar weak because of Keynesian deficit spending.

We don't have the same aversion to fiscal responsibility as, say, President Bush.

There's plenty of blame to go around.

this would be making the assumption that obama wants to help fix our economy in america's interests. NWO, here we go.

We all saw this coming....just the way things were going, all the promises made during
the election couldn't possibly be done. Same as any other election. Say anything to win.

Now....it is ....we will have to wait for this and wait for that...

However, the Dems got in just the way they wanted.
Now maybe the Dem. Congress will get off their behinds and do something.
They didn't do much for the past 2 years when the sky was falling except blame Pres. Bush for
everything that has been happening since Nafta was signed by former Pres. Clinton in the 90's.

America has been for sale for a long time and it is time to start buying it back.
God willing....

Yeah, it's really easy to get things done with a President who has never issued a single veto in 6 years suddenly starts vetoing bills right and left because he doesn't like the Democratic Congress.

Buy a good, solid home safe and stick your cash inside. It might not earn interest, but you won't lose it, either. Two more banks went under yesterday, one in Texas and one in California. FDIC only insures up to a point. What's this world coming to, when even your bank deposits are not safe?

What if you can't afford to buy a solid home safe....

And maybe you don't have any money to put in one anyway.....

We all must get to work to heal our global wounds!

Finally we have a leader who will speak for our voices...but one person can't do it alone. Now that we have finally chosen a man of ethics and integrity, I truly believe it will be easier to rally behind him and do for ourselves -so that we may do for the world!

Being inspired by a great leader can have a powerful rippling affect. I was so inspired by Barack Obama, I wrote this song/video in support of our children -our future generations! It is titled, 'For the Children' and it is my gift of love to the planet. I hope it touches and inspires all who watch it -just as Barack Obama has inspired me! I was disappointed not to notice Paul Krugman among President Elect Obama's advisers. Elsewhere, there is a report that the federal deficit increased by half a trillion dollars in the 23 days preceding the election.

If there are banks too big to fail, shouldn't they be liable to anti trust suits? Selling mortgages with low prospects of repayment must be some kind of fraud. Why isn't anybody going to jail?

President Elect Obama should prepare a program to be implemented immediately when he takes office. This is life and death for many Americans. A rational program cannot be begun too soon, neither is it clear it can begin while the current administration holds power. (That wasn't a very nice thing to say. You can assume my apology if President Bush calls Congress back to an emergency session and signs an extension of unemployment insurance -- a small first step.)

I have some reservation with Paul Krugman, but he will have very good advise to the President Elect. I'd rather have Krugman than Paulson. Krugman favors removing the Voting Rights of bank's CEO's and executives. Paulson favored it - with their Voting Rights intact, these theives will vote to favor golden parachutes, pay all their investors and hoard the bailout monies.

Obama has to be exhausted, both mentally and physically. His joke about Nancy proves it, because he is usually so thoughtful.

He needs to take a week or two of rest and relaxation. Choosing his cabinet members are the most important decisions he will make. He needs a clear fresh mind for that. He did great by choosing Rahn Emanuel, but he needs to take a break now.

Obamas not a stupid man but neither is he a Godllike creature that many think he is.
So with the financial crises, and the inherited White House mess in general, we need to do what the Bible says. It says, "If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face (acknowledge that God even exists) and turn from their wicked ways, (corporate greed, etc. then will I heal their land----oh if my people will pray.

And no, we don't have to do what the Bible says, but you are more than welcome to do what you want.

That is : IF Bush does nothing in the interim ....

Now if THIS is not leadership (only 3 days since his win) ....then we'd better redefine leadership.

That Obama press conference was a joke. The only headline coming from it was, "what dog is he going to buy?"

The lack of specifics from this press conference is an indicator of what people can expect from Mr. Change... which is NOTHING. Don't believe the hype, people.

He's not the President YET, genius.

/!? Why is that so hard for people to understand?!

That's why he is called President Elect. If he came out like gangbusters he will be called presumptous because he's not President yet.

I Wish he could start early but GEORGE W. BUSH is the President until JAN 20, 2009!!!

In this economic fallouts and industries going bust, yes I favor him like a gangbusters. There is what is called a TRANSITION PERIOD, where he must and should lay out his policies. He can, as President Elect mitigate this economic meltdown by stating these program to mitigate the damage.

He cannot wait to issue his economic policy. Stating a clear policy will have a huge effect on the market. To keep the citizens in the dark will be a huge disaster. Guessing game is fatal.

Between here and 01-20-09, God only knows what Bush has in mind.
