CHICAGO — Short of a coveted ticket for a taping of "The Oprah Winfrey Show," an easier way to surround yourself with the presence of the queen of talk is to go to her official store across from Harpo studios in what was once a Chicago warehouse district.

With its dim lighting, hardwood floors and urban-loft feel, The Oprah Store is a hybrid souvenir shop and trendy boutique. It's been open since January _ almost a year _ and has hosted an average 250 post-Oprah show shoppers and curious Winfrey fans a day.

Now Harpo is taking that demand and putting it online, launching Friday. It's an expansion of a small shopping Web site that carried keychains and T-shirts. The new online store will sell 800-plus items, about 90 percent of what's available at the Chicago shop. http://www.theoprahstore.com

Fans say going to the Chicago store is one way they can feel closer to someone they admire.

Catherine Hinkle, 52, a pharmacist from Overland Park, Kan., recently spent more than $200 after a taping.

"I don't mind spending money here," Hinkle said, lifting her two large lime green shopping bags with "The Oprah Store" written on the side. "I feel like I'm supporting who she is."

At the 5,500-square-foot brick-and-mortar boutique, fans can buy "O" apparel, umbrellas, coffee mugs, baby bibs and pet collars. Tote bags and note cards are printed with Winfrey quotes like "Live your own dreams." Non-branded clothing such as cashmere sweaters and lounge outfits project a certain calm.

Store manager Darcy Rogers said everything was selected with Winfrey's style and taste in mind.

Customers are "really specific," Rogers said. "They want something with Oprah's signature or just the O."

It is rare for a talk show host like Winfrey to have an official store.

Not even Regis Philbin, whose television tenure has lasted decades, can pull it off, said Wendy Liebmann, the CEO of WSL Strategic Retail based in New York.

"She's the annointer of all things," Liebmann said. "She, more than anyone else in pop culture, has been able to leverage her celebrity in a way that people consider fairly reasonable...That gives her the authority to reach out across all these categories," Liebmann said.

One of the only other comparable examples of a celebrity having an official store is Celine Dion, who had a boutique at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas during her five-year run there.

At Winfrey's store, the real draw for some die-hard Winfrey fans is "Oprah's Closet," a dark wooden armoire filled with clothes and shoes that Winfrey herself once wore or kept in her own closet. Proceeds from that section go to Winfrey's Angel Network, which contributes to a number of projects.

"Can you imagine wearing that dress and telling people where it's from?" Hinkle, looking at tiered, buttercream evening gown, size 16, for $500.

But with those items being sold at prices ranging from $80 to $500, many fans are more likely to stick to keychains or the workout wear, available in a wide range of sizes.

"Her stuff was very normal," said Lori Nimmo, 43, of Highland, Mich., who tapes Winfrey's shows all week and watches them on Saturday morning. "Stuff that we would wear. That's what makes her accessible."

Oprah can do want Oprah wishes. She has worked hard and well....and does much good in the world. The Country and the world need people they can look up to and respect. Now...some like the color green .....which in this case is "envy"!

I like your idea that she has worked hard and well, and can do as she wishes. I agree.
Wasn't it here that McCain was criticized for having money, and many houses?

What's the difference?

If you research how Cindy McCain, the owner of the 13 houses,
got her money, there is a big difference.

Oprah earned her fortune.
Cindy inherited her fortune from her convicted felon daddy.
Oprah is a hard working woman. Cindy is a modern day, Mob Princess.

Excuse me everyone. There is QVC, Home Shopping Nextwork, Something kind of jewelry show, etc, etc.
Why pick on Oprah when she is doing the same thing except on her own network.. I say, GOOD FOR HER !!!!! She is smart and giving...that is enough for me.

I live in the area and can't believe this.
Good Grief!
She should have a Food Pantry, not a Gift Shop.

Kudos to Oprah for her personal success and her generosity
to others but in MY OPINION this store is an OVER THE TOP,
FOR PROFIT, "GIFT" SHOP.

True she does have three SMALL areas of her store where
purchases provide a share to three charities but overall the
5,500 square foot store is AN OVER DONE "O" MONEY PIT.

Feel free to purchase the over priced Ceramic Teapot for One
at $ $66.00.

Or perhaps you want the Cashmere "O" Throw for $350.00.

My favorite, the .99 "O" flip flops for a mere $15.00.

No apology for my "O"pinion is necessary.

I *like* Oprah, and I think she's been great about her support for progressive issues, including her support for Barack Obama. But, 'The Oprah Store'??? Oy VAY! I have to admit I haven't watched her show in years/decades. For me she is not God, or even Mother Teresa. She's just lucky, and "there but for the grace of God go you or I"... She's not particularly talented, not particularly articulate -- she's just been doing the same thing over and over and over again until something stuck, and she's made a ton of dough doing so. DOESN'T SHE HAVE ENOUGH??? With so much suffering in this world, and so much economic catastrophe and calamity crushing once prosperous lives here at home and around the globe, I find her a mere superficial diversion that soccer moms and other sycophants have deified into a metahuman -- completely undeservedly. She's merely a mortal with lots of money -- that's all. And when she trots out some new commercial pablum like this, she's merely an expression of banality...

you need to stop hating on Oprah, there are may Billionaires out there who has way more money than Oprah, go and hate on them,...... besides, she does a lot of good for the poor with her money

There are many billionaires, but only one black woman billionaire; that's why people choose to hate on Oprah. If a white man makes a billion it is deserved, but if a black woman does it, it's dismissed as all luck.

She could do a lot more good for the poor if she did it quietly, without splashing enormous 'O's over everything she does. That's just wasting money. Case in point, her school in South Africa - that's about educating a very small people in her name and making sure the world knows about it. If she truly cared about education for girls in Africa (which is an *enormous* problem), she could have opened hundreds of schools with the money she spent on her one 'Oprah' school. Vanity - it's not at all becoming.

Not particularly talented?!!! You try talking for an hour a day, five days a weeks, and making it so fresh, so spontanieous, so amusing that millions upon millions of people hang on your every word to the point that you're one of the richest & most influential people on the planet for a quarter century. Most of us can't even keep a stranger at a party entertained for more than 5 minutes; Oprah's kept the world entertained for more than two decades by constanty reinventing herself. It's not easy to dominate a field as competitive & improvisational as TV talk shows for a quarter century. Lots of extremelyt bright & extremely talented people have tried & failed. And then on top of that she has the media savvy to build an empire & the political savvy to put a black man in the white house. The woman is pure genius.

Reinventing herself? Let's see, she gained weight, she lost weight, she gained weight, she lost weight, etc.

She doesn't need the money but her "O" ego needs the shop.
She stated this all began when her audiences wanted to take home
a keepsake from her show, a Key Chain.

What to do?

Open a 5,500 square foot "O" SHOP and SELL THE KEY CHAIN.
