NEW YORK — It wasn't religion that broke up his marriage to Jane Fonda, Ted Turner declares in a new memoir.

He says he was "upset" when he discovered his wife's "conversion," but "it wasn't because she had become Christian," the 69-year-old Turner writes in "Call Me Ted," which comes out next week. The Associated Press obtained an early copy.

He was upset because Fonda didn't talk to him about it.

Turner's 433-page book, co-authored with former Turner Broadcasting executive Bill Burke, reviews his loquacious, multi-pronged rise as yachtsman, baseball team owner, cable visionary and philanthropist.

The book includes commentary from fellow America's Cup racers, business moguls such as Bill Gates and former Time Warner chairman Gerald Levin, friends such as former President Carter, family members and Fonda, his wife for 10 years.

Fonda wrote at length about her marriage to Turner in her memoir "My Life So Far," and Turner adds a similar take without referring to the infidelities alleged against him by the Academy Award-winning actress. The two say they remain good friends.

He remembers their impulsive courtship, beginning in 1990 with his learning of her divorce from activist Tom Hayden and immediately calling her, a virtual stranger, for a date. She declined. He persisted. Six months later she accepted. They married in 1991.

They cared deeply about each other but spent so much time apart that they had "trouble communicating" even when together; not even couples therapy could save the marriage, with Fonda's faith cited at the time as a possible cause for their divorce. Turner remembered going back to their Montana ranch for the first time after their split and seeing that Fonda had taken all her belongings.

"Our closets faced each other's, and when I saw her empty space I sat down on the floor between them and cried," writes Turner, who had two previous wives.

The son of a demanding advertising magnate who killed himself when Turner was in his mid-20s, he acknowledges his own disturbing mood swings and writes that in the 1980s he was told he was bipolar and placed on lithium. After a couple of years, feeling little change, he tried a new psychiatrist, who reversed the earlier diagnosis and canceled the prescription.

Turner also looks back on his unlikely friendship with Fidel Castro (they hunted together, then argued about politics over rum and cigars) and his reconciliation with former rival Rupert Murdoch over a mutual concern about the environment. He defends his highly criticized decision to colorize such Hollywood classics as "Casablanca," reiterating previous comments that he was making old films more accessible to young audiences.

He looks back proudly on building his cable empire, including the founding of CNN, and sadly on his eventual departure from Time Warner, which bought out his Turner Broadcasting Systems in 1996. He still insists he was "fired" by Levin in the wake of Time Warner's 2000 merger with AOL, and Levin, allowed to offer his side, still denies it (They no longer speak, Levin adds, regretfully).

In his hopefully titled conclusion, "Onward and Upward," Turner says he has "very few regrets," vows to live long and well enough to fill a second book and wonders what should be inscribed on his tombstone.

As a young celebrity, he wanted "You Can't Interview Me Here." In middle age, he liked "Here Lies Ted Turner. He Never Owned a Broadcast Network."

As an older man and published author: "I Have Nothing More to Say."

Before Turner bought the ranch in Montana it was called the "Flying D"...we used to jump the fence and flyfish in the beaver ponds on the place in summer and hunt the back side up from the "Bear Trap" canyon along the lower Madison river in winter...it was posted but the owner turned a blind eye to the locals hunting and fishing after all the land is awesomly huge...in the middle of it lies "Cowboy Heaven" a remarkable piece of property publicly owned but land locked...if you asked you could ride in on horseback and spend a day...the road from the Gallatin river across the property to the Madison was also made avaiable to anyone w/ a 4X4 to cross...the owner ran cattle and was hardcore but fair...when Turner bought the place he posted it fenced it and hired fence riders to patrol it constantly...got rid of the cows and started running Bison...treated the locals like garbage and created his own empire...lot's of folks here hated him for his attitude and arrogance...he's not around here much since he and Jane split...but still if you want to jump a fence and hook a brookie you better think twice...you'll be in court paying a fine HE does'nt need...

Almost half my life ago, when I was 21, a budding romance ended because of an argument. I couldn't believe the guy i had moved in with had had symptoms of an allergy to my cat, made a doctor's appointment, confirmed the allergy, and gotten a prescription.

He thought I left him because I wouldn't just 'get rid of' my cat.

I left because he did all those things over the course of a WEEK, and although we slept in the same bed, never mentioned any of it.

I expect to be kept 'in the loop.' I can't imagine a spouse finding religion and not mentioning it! Sounds like they were on a rough road anyway.

I lost all respect for Jane Fonda when I heard she had become a believer. How sad.

A quick look at the relevant stories would show you that Jane hasn't changed any of her political views even though she is now religious.

I hope that Jane is happy knowing everything in her life is summed up in one book, the Bible

Did you ever actually that book? It's the biggest pile of dung I've ever read - - how people are deluded by it is really the mystery of the ages.

Spirituality is good. Just about every society I've been in that follows some religious doctrine, it seems to be working. With anything though, some people have turned religion into big business. Some people choose not to raise their children with a spiritual foundation and that's the attitude I see with some people degrading religion. Or perhaps they received some bad theology.

The churches in Europe are empty and look at the deprivation of morals over there. Mistresses are acceptable, people turn the other way on just about anything over there. When you look at it, the Bible is a tool for we humans to live by. Without it, I'm afraid our world would be in much worse shape than it is now.

If Jane didn't discuss her yearning for faith then there was already a breakdown of communication between her and her husband anyway long before she headed toward a church. It's made her a better person too. The way Jane and her brother Peter were raised, its a wonder neither of them isn't in a mental ward.

There have been mistresses in Europe for a long time. (A number had their portraits painted and these are still admired in museums by people who don't know any better.) The reason Europe lost its religion is because of the role that it had during WWII in supporting the Nazis and Fascists. I sincerely hope that certain types of religion also lose their followers in the US once people wise up to the destruction that "faith" has caused here. Deprivation of morals? That's because secular humanism is villified. More people would have "morals," which I prefer to call "ethics," if religion did not claim such a monopoly over people's hearts and minds. (Look at the failure of abstinence-only sex "education.) It's kind of like denying people the opportunity to learn how to swim, and instead teaching them to fear the water. In reality, everyone risks falling over at some point, because let's face it, the seas are rough. However, only a true internal sense of right and wrong, not a gullible child's sense of being watched by an all-knowing sky god, is what keeps us good. It's no accident that people (like Jane Fonda) without this internal compass are the ones who run toward religion - they need non-negotiable rules that don't require much hard thought.

Europe's empty churches are not as empty as you believe. But in the cases they are empty, that is a good thing. Humans must leave superstitions of all kinds behind them and move forward. If USA continues on its path of stubborn belief in the supernatural over acceptance of reality, it will end badly.

Hunting with Castro, now that sounds intriguing. Was that hunting for traitors or what?

I lost some respect for Jane when she converted to Christianity. I thought she had a brain...now I am not so sure.

What is with all the hostility towards religion in general and Christianity specifically? Would you say that religion was bad for, say, Martin Luther King or Dorothy Day?

Periodically composing one's epitaph from a young age on is an unusual pastime indeed. I wonder if he says what his revised psychological diagnosis was.

I don't agree with that. Am not an everyday church goer. In fact I very seldom go but I do know people who have told me going back to church helped their marriages.

The man will always have a low place in my esteem for his decision to colourize classic movies in the 80s. TCM *sort of* makes up for it, but in general colourization was horrible.

Actually, brucellosis was originally transmitted to bison, which are native to North America, from cattle, which are native to the Old World. Research indicates that few cases of brucellosis have been conveyed to cattle from bison.

I like Ted. He has several exceptionally admirable traits.

You mean like the time he said he would tell Pope John Paul II a Polish joke? Yeah, really admirable.

I agree the guys is interesting. And he has bi-polar. If it wasn't for him we wouldn't be watching cnn. Oh how I wish he still owned that station. He messed up with the AOL, and that put him where he is today. Didn't he once what to box it out with Rupert Murdock? Or was that someone is? I don't know butt the man is a should be left alone, he still loves Jane Fonda.
