Obama Wants Lieberman To Remain In Democratic Caucus

President-elect Barack Obama has informed party officials that he wants Joe Lieberman to continue caucusing with the Democrats in the 111th Congress, Senate aides tell the Huffington Post.

Obama's decision could tie the hands of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who has been negotiating to remove Lieberman as chair of the Homeland Security and Government Reform committee while keeping him within the caucus. Lieberman has insisted that he will split from the Democrats if his homeland security position is stripped.

Aides to the president-elect did not return requests for comment. Senate officials were unclear whether Obama would be comfortable with Lieberman maintaining his current committee post.

Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has said that he would welcome Lieberman into the GOP, though he has little to offer in terms of committee assignments.

If Lieberman were to continue caucusing with the Democrats without being punished for his campaign conduct -- Democrats say he broke a promise not to campaign negatively against Obama -- the progressive community will undoubtedly be up in arms. For Obama, however, the move may be a shrewd gesture towards reconciliation, in the process taking a potentially taxing political fight off the table.

Fellow Connecticut Senate Chris Dodd, who has spoken out in favor of Lieberman remaining in the party, explained as much to reporters on Friday:

"What does Barack Obama want?... He's talked about reconciliation, healing, bringing people together. I don't think he'd necessarily want to spend the first month of this president-elect period, this transition period, talking about a Senate seat, particularly if someone is willing to come forward and is willing to be a member of your family in the caucus in that sense."

A Democrat close to Lieberman, meanwhile, said he thought that keeping Lieberman in the fold "would be a good move for Obama as a way to make real his promise of new politics, a less partisan Washington and more unity. He would do so at some risk. Obviously there is a liberal wing of the party that wants Joe punished... "

There is, perhaps, one measure by which Democratic leadership can still reconcile the competing realities of Lieberman's future in the caucus. One Democratic aide said that the party was considering letting the Connecticut Senator keep his post at homeland security but forcing him to relinquish one or both of his spots on two more high-profile committees: Armed Services and Environment & Public Works.

Lieberman is in line for leadership roles in both of those committees should the current chairs leave their posts. On Armed Services, the two senators ahead of him are Ted Kennedy and Robert Byrd. On Environment and Public Works, current chair Barbara Boxer may face a tough reelection campaign in 2010 and second in line, Sen. Max Baucus, already heads another committee.

If Democratic leadership were to keep Lieberman on homeland security but impede any chance of ascending to these other posts, that may be enough to placate progressive activists demanding punishment while keeping the Connecticut Senator in the caucus.

UPDATE: Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo writes that Bill Clinton has also been "making calls on Sen. Lieberman's behalf," something that the Huffington Post later heard from another Hill source.

But Matt McKenna, a spokesman for the former president, vehemently denies the report.

"It's completely false," he says.

My favorite comment on this blog is "If Obama wants him in ...he stays in .... next subject." We didn't elect a King, and the idea that we should all turn off our brains and bow down is only a gesture of anti-democratic thinking, not pragmatism, as it might appear to be.

I agree. And I disagree with Obama on this matter. Lieberman is too unpredictable, he needs to go.

Obama won on "change," but what we're witnessing is The Audacity of Caution.

I believe that Barack is shrewd, me thinks he may be applying the adage of
keeping his friends close and "keeping his enemies closer"

Homeland Security needs to be completely redone!

Lieberman is not the ONE to TRUST WITH THAT!

gwbj - I'm an absolute supporter of Barack Obama, but I and many others will be raising much hell if Joe Lieberman is allowed to keep his chairmanship, and caucus with the Democrats after his Judas act. And I certainly hope that this does not mean that Obama is going to be too tied in with Jews to be just as fair and equal to the Palestinians as with the Jews. Which is THE only way to bring peace to the Middle East, which I don't really believe that the Jews want anyway. Jews have always been, and still are ONLY for themselves, and are one of the most selfish people on the earth. And while I am a minister, I do NOT consider them to be the "chosen people," nor preach about many of the lies that are penned in the Old Testament, including the false creation of the earth and mankind. Now, watch and see if they don't try to dominate Obama and his Middle East policies. Of course, you must already know that they (Lieberman and all Jews) do not believe in, respect, nor care anything about Jesus.

Folks, taking chairmanship from Joe isn't "getting revenge", it isn't "payback", and it has NOTHING to do with anger or being upset with him.

The point is MERELY that Democrats need to _be_ Democrats. One advantage of being in a party is when you party is in the majority, the chairmanships go to your party. Lieberman IS NOT on the Democratic team, even if he caucuses with the Dems.

The Democratic party has enough trouble getting the DINOs out (Democrats In Name Only), and Lieberman is absolutely _not_ a Democrat in any way, shape or form.

People seem to confuse the point that when it was an evenly divided senate, with Lieberman's one seat caucusing with the Dems letting the Dems be in the majority, it was a healthy TRADE; you get a chairmanship, we all get majority status. Now that situation doesn't exist any longer. So, there's no more trade going on - it's not a trade if one side gives and the other gives nothing.

As angry as I am at Lieberman, I think Obama is absolutely right on this. We have important things to accomplish, and getting revenge on Joe Lieberman is not one of them.

What was Lieberman doing these last two years? Do you hand someone the power to undermine you again and again?

I don't think Joe it any vital organs when he stabed Barack in the back so Barack doesn't feel the need to seek revenge.

Joe has got to go! Give Joe the door!

Here's a novel idea - how about rewarding the loyal Democrats by giving one of them the Chair

First Rahm Emmanuel, now this. I'm starting to wonder . . .

And what's wrong with Rahm? And what's wrong with stripping Joe of his chair, but letting him to caucus with Dems?

He campaigned with McCain, he should be out.
08:53 AM on 11/11/2008
As someone who actively campaigned for, raised funds for, wrote blogs about and encouraged all and sundry to vote for Barack Obama from the outset of his campaign I would be very disappointed indeed if Barack were to start pandering to those pushing the personal agenda of an odious traitor like Joe Lieberman, as well as trying to get Barack to offer prominent positions to Republicans who, we all know, didn't have the interests of the average voter, the Democrats and Barack in particular at heart. There is no way that had the Republicans won that John McCain and Sarah Palin would have been that remotely magnanimous towards Barack Obama. And I'm watching this scenerio with great interest. Since I won't hesitate to turn all the influence I have against Barack and ensure he only stays in the White House for one term only if he squanders and even betrays the trust of all those whose stirling efforts and sacrifices got him to the White House. It wasn't vested interests and lobbyists who were in your corner when you needed it most Barack. AND DON'T YOU FORGET THAT.

To those who cannot see beyond the temporary moment of anger and passion, think in terms of long-term practical governance instead of a short-term emotional high from enacting revenge.

If you think Lieberman is not going to pay a price, you are mistaken. Obama is being very shrewd, planning to leverage Holy Joe to help get his domestic agenda passed; but I think Lieberman will be made aware of the fact that his language on the campaign trail was duly noted.

Lieberman will be in a living hell watching his back wondering when the the clever new president will make his move. Even if there is no "there, there," it is going to be fun to watch Lieberman squirm and become effectively power-less.

The drip-drip pay-back will be far more painful than a quick yank and back-slap. I trust Obama knows exactly what he is doing. I all realize that this "get Joe" issue will be seen as a blip in history compared to such things as universal healthcare and arresting global warming.

"Temporary moment of anger and passion.."?
No dear, this is eight years' history of betrayal in the making. Nobody's acting hastily or vengefully here. But at some point, enough is enough. As Obama says, if he said so, we don't mind him staying to caucus with us, but he can't keep his Homeland chairmanship. That's all.
