Belief Net:

Religious Obama voters and religious McCain voters worship and pray at similar rates but interpret the Bible in dramatically different ways--and have starkly different views on the issues--according to a new Beliefnet user survey.

Among those who attend church weekly, 81% of Obama supporters pray daily compared to 93% of McCain's supporters. But when asked how they interpret the Bible, only 17% of Obama's most religious voters believe "The Bible is the literal word of God," compared to 58% of McCain's religious voters."

Even though President-Elect Obama is NOT a Muslim........ SO WHAT! if he were? Why do ignorant people attach so much stigma to someone else's religion, and then call themselves Christians??? Get some smarts ignorant people - I assure you, being enlightened is not so bad afterall!

Exactly. And McCain didn't help matters when asked if he thought Obama was a Muslim. "No, ma'am, he's an American."

Again, what are Muslim Americans to make of that response?

I wonder how a 7 year old Muslim-American must feel when he/she hears that America is the land of oportunity, then hears what these folks are saying.

People - yes, even self-described God-fearing Christians - who rail that there's a problem with a person being Muslim are practicing hate speech. Just look at exactly what they're syaing, and substitute the words "Jew", "Catholic", "Black", "Hispanic", "Gay", etc. for the word "Muslim". I've had a few friends who went down this path, and I've chosen to call them out on it. Good news is - some of them did learn, and say "Oh...I get it".

anyone who believes the Bible in a Literal sense is living in an Imaginary World, and they are in need of deep therapy

I'll take deep exception to that statement. My mother, may she rest in peace, believed in the literal interpretation of the Bible. Nothing I could say ever dissuaded her. With the exception of my wife, I have not known as fine and honorable a person (even if she was a Republican). Obviously her faith helped her survive with dignity in this world. While I do not share her belief system, I am thankful it provided her the reassurance she needed.

I do believe that the words in the Bible are "God breathed". I can feel it when I read the Bible. It is powerful. I'm sorry if you think I am living in an imaginary world...but if so, I would rather have God in my world than not. Having said that...I find it offensive for the right wing evangelicals to think that they are above others...and that to be a Democrat...or to vote non Republican is going against God. Jesus , in my opinion, would be helping the "little people" if he were walking the earth today. He would not be on Capital Hill or Wall St. He would be under the bridges and in the shelters. While I don't doubt Evangelicals love of Christ...I wonder how they can so easily reconcile the lies and deceit that were spewed from their mouths and from the mouths of McCain and Palin. They are Hypocrits...at least that's the way I see it. I do not consider lies and deceit as "Christian values". (and Jesus didn't either)

Read the 3500BC story of Horace & you will think you're reading the story of Christ. Christ means the chosen one. The 10 commanmements came directly from the Egyptian book of the dead, although they have many more.

Here's my conversation with a Repub evangelical;

Him: Obamas attended a madrass and is a Muslim.

Me: Uh... weren't you just ranting about him attending Rev Wrights CHRISTIAN church, of which Obama has been a member for many years?

Him: Yes, that Wright's a radical.

Me: Is Wright a Muslim?

Him: ummmm.... no?

Me: So, is Obama a Muslim or a Christian? Ya gotta stick with one story or the other, otherwise don't they cancel themsleves out?

Him: uhhhh.... Well, I guess he's a Christian...,but that darn Rev Wright is a darn radical and he and that Ayers fellow are conspiring against us.

Me: Sigh....

Him: uhhhh.... Well, I guess he's a Christian...,but that darn Rev Wright is a darn radical and he and that Ayers fellow are conspiring against us.

Me: Hey, it just came on Fox News, Obama's a Muslim!

Him: I knew it!!!

Me: Sigh....

The sad part about it, is that this Evangelical actually holds a position of authority in some Church. Doesn't bode well for those who listen to him for his devine (or devoid) enlightenment. These pastors are doing more to prove themselves to have little to no connect with biblical principles, they seem not to be too concerned with seeking wisdom.

Tearing apart church's,pastors, ministers or whateever in a man's faith should not be allowed! For you will face God some day, and what you say against him and his own!

This election cycle opened my eyes to how intellectually poor many Americans are... I have to believe that the basis of this belief by so many McCain supporters is just an attempt to hide their racism behind religion, or they are just completely devoid of intelligence. You would think that the controversy involving a Christian pastor Rev. Wright would provide some clues in to the President Elect's religious view. It is a Christian church!!!

I think the overarching concern here is obviously the education system. I echo Obama's admonishment to American families, turn off the television, sit down with your children, and read with them, help them with their home work, and become a fully integrated cog in the education wheel of your child. If not you are going to end up with a country full of people like those who supported McCain that believe PEOTUS Obama is a Muslim.

You mean like trying to rebuild our economy, infrastructure and education system by ending and illegal war and letting Bush's tax cuts for the ultra rich expire? Hmmmmm.....

Who cares what these Palin-like hick morons think? The economy and Obama have made them politically irrelevant, since even some of them were so scared for their wallets that they abandoned their fanatical stupidity and voted Dem this year. The only political issue that counts in America is whether now becomes perceived, in office, as a guy who's truly improving the economy. If he wins THAT battle, as the Clinton stock market of the 90s demonstrated, Fox can publish a picture of him wearing a turban and joking with the president of Iran, and it won't hurt him a bit. The American majority ALWAYS votes for their pocketbooks, when they see who threatens them and who can save them clearly enough. The politics of distraction don't work, for a critical minority of the evangelical fanatics, when they see the threat to their bank account for what it is, or see who's making them money.

...because McCain/Palin and the abhorrent Rethuglican mailers told them he was, and they never corrected their supporters, or called them out when they shouted those things about Obama at their rallies.

No one should be surprised, though, that a Republican is shirking his/her responsibility.

its not an education issue.

its a character issue, its a morality issue.

its a mutation of the word christian.

real christians need to take back their religion, just like we took back our country.

It is most definitely an education issue! However, I agree with your other points. The strongest support for McCain came from the southern and Appalachian states, the least educated and least diverse regions of the country. This is the marginalized base of the Republican party, which can no longer carry an election. Thank God!

100% of them practice a mutated version of being a christian, one that seeks divide human from human, promotes h a t e and insists on believing lies.

they need to do some biblical research on the shape s a tan takes in the world and then tey need to look at their clergy in the eye and question their motivation and the outcome of their doctrine.

then they need to ask for forgiveness and go volunteer at a food shelter, or youth center, or old folks home.

They need to get back to the business of being christians,

I still think the whole "he's Muslim" thing was a thinly veiled excuse to not vote for a black man. I won't vote for a Muslim is really a twistedly post-9/11- PC way of saying I won't for a black man.
