Talking Points Memo:

Rep. Paul Broun, the Georgia Republican who warned of a coming Obama dictatorship, is now (sort of) sorry. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports:

Georgia Congressman Paul Broun Tuesday backed away from comparing the policies of President-elect Obama to those of Hitler or a Marxist dictator.

After stirring a controversy that was grabbing national attention, the Republican lawmaker from Athens apologized for making such references.

"I regret putting it that way," Broun told WGAC radio in Augusta. "I apologize to anyone who has taken offense at that."

...

"The point I tried to make is that he is extremely liberal, he has promoted a lot of socialistic ideas, and it just makes me concerned," Broun told a local radio station back home.

Hey Rahm,

When you and Nancy start writing up the list of congresspeople to replace in 2010, will you please put Paul Broun near the top?

Thanks.

America

I suspect the good Congressmen realized he had offended a quite significant part of his constituency by his original comparison.

Anyone who knows about this particiular political persuasion knows that there is a significant number of them who think the short psycho with the mustache was a great defender of "white" "christian" civilization. *

And of course they would resent the comparison.

*(To confirm check out the group David Duke is associated with and look at the symbols - they are quite familiar. Then look to see who these folks run with - who their friends in Europe are).

Didn't the Senate waste time castigating MOVEON for the Betray us ad?

Don't ya think this is worse?

After all, it's the president elect.

It could be viewed as incitement to violence.

Well, it might be if he were a Democrat and the President a Republican.

But I can assure you that when it's the other way around, it's not illegal or even immoral.

You could ask Associate Justice S CA Lia who could confirm it was the Founders' original intent that the nations laws not apply to Republicans.

So this clown thinks Nazis were socialists because they called themselves "National Socialists"? They also said the Jews started WWII, does he buy that too? Nazis where corporatists.. FASCISTS, right-wing scumbags just like this neo-con. Socialism is the government take-over of industry. The Nazis didn't take-over industry, Krupp, Mercedes Benz, Junkers, etc. worked hand-in-glove with the government and the profits went to the same upper-class. Sound familiar? Like Hitler, the neo-cons support the rights of corporations over the rights of the individual. Like Hitler, they support the suppression of labor unions. Go ahead, call liberals socialists, even communists. But never forget that conservatives align with Fascism, not liberals. Their hero McCarthy worked to free the Nazi murderers of Malmedy. The "America First" movement was a conservative movement. Today's Neo-Nazis are aligned to conservatism, not liberalism. Give me a break! Do these idiots ever take history courses?

How harsh of you.

Of course they do!

But it's "real" history not your "unreal" history.

His congressional district includes Athens, GA (Home of UGA) and the far eastern coast of the state. Let's thank him kindly in two years people. I, like you have had enough of people who really don't deserve the offices they hold.

One would think that the people in Georgia whould be hiding their heads in shame for electing this guy.

But these are the same poeple who sent Saxby to Congress.

Once you get outside of Athens just about all you'll find are fundmentalist bible thumpers. Brounie appeals to these social issue ( non-thinking) voters.

You know what...we were concerned for 8 YEARS of the Bush Administration - where was your outrage or concern THEN?
08:48 PM on 11/12/2008
My 2 cents worth... Mr Broun should think (and think again) before he opens his mouth.
( I was actually wondering yesterday, after his original comment, if he had some white robes in his closet).

I was once called ru.d.e and condescending for saying Americans are arr.o.gant and ig.no.rant about socialism, but this guy vindicates me.

I honestly don't think the people who are crying out these charges really understand what the term means. Then again - they probably do and they just don't want to "share the wealth".

Socialism, communism, liberalism - the root words of each of them have positive meanings.
Let's try looking at sexism, racism and fascism for a change.

Hitler was a Facist, and Marx a socialist....So why bother even bringing up Hitler...Should just stick to Marx if was trying to make some kind of point...What it is have no clue.

this mo.ron yesterday said Hitler was elected...
06:37 PM on 11/12/2008
Actually Hitler was elected as PM in the late 30's. So he was right on that.
