LOS ANGELES — An up-and-coming fashion designer who has worked with A-list celebrities was convicted Thursday of sexually assaulting seven girls and women, some of them aspiring models lured to Los Angeles with promises of jobs and stays at luxury hotels.

After nearly two weeks of deliberation, a jury found Anand Jon Alexander, once featured on "America's Next Top Model," guilty of 14 felonies, including forcible rape, and two misdemeanors. Authorities said his victims ranged in age from 14 to 21.

The 34-year-old designer faces a mandatory life sentence because the jury found he had committed multiple forceful acts against multiple victims. He must serve 67 years before he is eligible for parole, meaning he will probably spend the rest of his life in prison.

Several people in the courtroom gasped as the verdicts were read, but Alexander showed no emotion. The 34-year-old designer wore a light gray suit and yellow tie, his black hair pulled back in a ponytail. He nodded grimly toward supporters before he was led away by sheriff's deputies.

He is under indictment in New York on similar charges involving nine women and is under investigation by authorities in Texas and Massachusetts.

"The ones that we know of are probably the tip of the iceberg of what truly exists," prosecutor Frances Young said outside court after the verdicts were read.

Alexander's attorneys maintained he was innocent, saying that there was a lack of physical evidence and that the women lied in court and sought revenge. Defense attorney Larry Levine said he would appeal.

"This case is not over by a long shot," Levine told reporters outside court. "For now, we are disappointed."

Levine said several victims were not credible because they remained in contact with Alexander after the alleged assaults, calling him on many occasions on his cell phone. Prosecutors said it was Alexander who kept in contact with the victims.

He was convicted of forcible rape, multiple counts of committing a lewd act on a child, attempted forcible oral copulation, and attempted sexual assault.

He was found not guilty of four felonies, including sexual penetration by a foreign object, oral copulation of a person under 18, and unlawful sexual intercourse. Jurors could not reach a verdict on three counts, and Superior Court Judge David Wesley declared a mistrial on those charges.

Outside the courtroom, several of Alexander's friends and relatives huddled together, some weeping openly. They declined to be interviewed.

Defense attorney Anthony Brooklier said jurors were swayed by the sheer number of charges and didn't judge each allegation on its merits.

"They were a bunch of weak cases. ... The cumulative effect was probably very prejudicial," Brooklier said.

The prosecutor, smiling broadly, said she was relieved by the verdicts and credited the victims with having the courage to come forward and testify.

"Mr. Alexander is a 34-year-old man who masquerades as a fashion designer," Young said. "Similar to the way pedophiles surround themselves with children, he chose a career where be could be surrounded by young, very naive, very impressionable girls ... and victimized them."

Sentencing is set for January.

Before his arrest last year, Alexander was featured on "Top Model" and touted by Newsweek as a person to watch. His Web site lists dozens of celebrity A-listers as clients, including Paris Hilton, described as a fan of Alexander's hand-printed jeans, which sell for more than $700. He has also worked with singer Mary J. Blige.

Beverly Hills police began investigating Alexander in March 2007 when a woman reported she had been sexually assaulted in his apartment.

Born in India, Alexander graduated from the Parsons School of Design in New York and launched a fashion line in 1999.

Don't you think it is a bit absurd to describe his attire in this type of article?

Talk about inappropriate reporting!

When will his hair-dresser be convicted? This guy might've got some willing action and not had to force himself on others if he hadn't such a freakish do.

abuse like this spreads throughout a culture that has become entangled in the corruption and deception and deceit of money makes everything POSSIBLE.....

while many are going to be cliched and talk about his just desserts in prison being someonelse's bitch - don't you think that this goes on in this culture dating back to the era when slaves from africa were transported to this culture against their wills...?? and how about the violation of the native americans by the lies, corruption, and deception of greedy settlers who set forth lies and distortions of the native americans as 'savages'...? and how about the crimes that are unfolding in iraq against the wills of the citizens of iraq who never asked for an occupation but for the tools necessary for them to determine their own liberation and democracy...??

plunder and rape seems to be two commodities of this culture that continues to thrive in lieu of a culture that has always been overshadowed by fear, corruption, deception, and betrayal. beyond this headline of a designer gone bad lies the bitter seed of a culture that needs to step away from cultural values that do not honor liberties BUT honors greed, fear, and ignorance.

I'm embarrassed he gives a bad name to Indian people. It's rare that an Indian person ventures into a field such as fashion, and i thought it was cool when he did. Too bad he let it go to his head like this.

Yes, if only he had used the big head.

Don't you think he would have assaulted women no matter if he was successful or not?

There has been a lot of discussion about this case elsewhere. Quite a few think there's racism involved. I don't necessarily agree as I believe he was guilty in many cases. But it doesn't make sense, though, why so many charges against him are taken seriously while charges at other fashion designers in similar position were dropped due to "flimsy evidence" and "it's circumstantial" (similar to some of Alexander's cases).

I try not to go there, but is it a coincidence that other designers are Caucasian? :/ This was brought up many times. He does need to go to jail for what he did, but so do other designers and photographers who got off scot-free, especially a certain high-profile photographer who allegedly drugged and date-raped potential models.

Ugh, it's so frustrating. Fashion industry really does need to clean itself up or at least acknowledge that far too many models (of all types) have been abused -- oh, excuse me, *cough* -- quoting Tina Brown's moronic term -- "mishandled."

Oh for sure. Taking down rich white folk is not something you do. In fact, it says "Masqueraded" as a Designer. As if he wasn't really, not like a REAL white designer... I'm sure half the agents in Hollywood do this. (Screw impressionable young women who want a movie role)

The racist language is for effect. It's a shame that we can't press charges against those who do Nazi Prison Sex Parties and Child molesting churches and all them.

One at a time?

Why? He had it made! A good paying job. Decent amount of fame. And what does he do; He goes about sexually assaulting women. I will never understand the male fashion designer.

Why was the main page headline for this story "Designer Found Guilty of Assault." The man was convicted of rape, as well as some lesser sexual assault chargers. Heading it as assault is misleading, that could be a throwing a single punch at someone. "Designer Found Guilty of Rape," is a lot more accurate.

So the lawyer thinks this man is innocent..............and ALL these other women are ganging up on him because he was a respectable, lovely man.

Hmm?

I'm amazed that people in NYC always find ways to stay in apartments without paying rent. It's something how the landlord/tenant laws favor the tenant even if they've only paid one month's rent.

That guy's a true predator. I hope that long hair comes in handy when the 'booty warrior' comes looking for him in prison. I got that phrase from some criminal on LockUp on MSNBC. Sorry.
