As Senate Democrats prepare for a vote on Sen. Joseph Lieberman's fate in the party, the political tea leaves indicate that he will likely keep his post as chair of the Homeland Security and Government Reform Committee.

Over the past few days, a growing number of colleagues have gravitated to Lieberman's corner. The most prominent of them is President-elect Barack Obama. The Illinois Senator issued indications this past week that he would like Lieberman to remain in the caucus, but he didn't tip his hand one way or another when it came to the chairmanship.

Since then, Obama has reportedly had conversations with multiple Senate allies including Dick Durbin, Ted Kennedy, Clair McCaskill, and Chris Dodd. One person he hasn't talked to is Lieberman himself.

"They have not spoken," said spokesperson Stephanie Cutter.

Nevertheless, Lieberman does seem to be developing the support he needs to stave off any attempt to strip him of his homeland security post. In addition to Obama, it was reported on Thursday that Dodd and Sens. Tom Carper, Bill Nelson and Ken Salazar had formed a group that was pushing for an alternative way to punish Lieberman while keeping him in the caucus. Sen. Evan Bayh, meanwhile, took to the "Rachel Maddow Show" to explain why taking away Lieberman's homeland security position -- even if the Connecticut independent didn't follow through on his threat to flee the caucus -- would be a bad thing.

"[He] might decide to stay and be bitter," said the Indiana Democrat. "What would happen is from time to time we have close votes... If Lieberman doesn't know what to do and we've exacted revenge on him, I think we could expect the same in return."

Indeed, the lingering question surrounding Lieberman's fate is not so much if he will remain as committee chair, but who - if anyone - will vote for him to be stripped of this title. Obama, actually, will not have a vote on the matter. A Senate aide explains that the issue will be decided by "New Congress, new caucus, new members," meaning that the incoming class will have a voice in deciding Lieberman's fate but not the president or vice president elect.

Contacted by the Huffington Post, nearly every office of newly elected incoming Democrats said they either had not looked thoroughly enough at the matter, were deferring for the moment to Democratic leadership, or simply couldn't comment. Jeff Merkley of Oregon has expressed disappointment with Lieberman's campaign conduct, describing it as a "knife through my heart." But his office, too, said he wasn't taking a position on his soon-to-be colleague.

With so many balls still up in the air, several aides said they did not expect a nail-biting vote next week vis-à-vis Lieberman's future. A position on what to do with his committee chairmanship will be forged, one source predicted, and the caucus would likely support it with minor dissension. One possibility, it seems, is a compromise punishment: to allow Lieberman to stay as chair of the Homeland Security and Government Reform Committee but take away a spot on either the Armed Services or Environmental and Public Works committee.

"There are people who clearly want to take some action and force some level of discipline," said a prominent adviser to Democratic leadership. "It is a complicated and delicate walk, but going forward one wants to keep him voting with the Dems as often as possible... My sense is there is a lot of discomfort and anger. On the other hand when passions cool and you see the margin that Obama won by you realize that Lieberman didn't have any impact. Even in the Jewish community, he was completely ineffectual in his advocacy for McCain."

The first thing they should do when they get back to actually all showing up in the Senate is too all turn their backs to him simultaneously. They should do it as a symbolic way of letting him know that he is being shunned. The way the Amish do to those who violate their beliefs. It would be instructive to Lieberman.

I agree ostracism is the most humiliatiating forms of discipline against another, yet, is completely peaceful.

I don't understand the Democrats, It's like they depend on the Voters to get them into office and the minute they're in there they completely diss what we want. Is it that they just can't read us properly, are incapable of paying attention or are they disrespecting our wishes. Very few if any of the voters that put them in office want the Democrats to continue to kow tow to Republicans. Republicans are the ones who make such a big deal about not appearing weak to Americas enemies. They have applied the same practice to fellow Americans who disagreed with them. The only thing they understand is power and rubbing peoples noses into the dirt. Now when we are in a position to give them a taste of their own medicine, our illustrious Democrats as usual show how weak they can be. Why, are they crazy or just plain stupid. I am willing to bet they will do nothing about putting Bush, Cheney and their henchmen behind bars. The Upperclass will continue to run roughshod over average Americans and get away with it. There will be no justice. I will remain an Independent because of this.

Come on Connecticut, if the current Dems don't have the spine to kick out the traitor, please do it for them in the next election. This makes us look soooooo weak. Pathetic.

westportmike,

Don't count on Connecticut Voters to rid us of Lieberman, Connecticut is full of Wealthy people and the rest are their slaves who depend on the morsels that they get for serving the Wealthy.

The Democrats deserve every bit of misery Lieberman will give them if they go through with this and leave him where he is. This idiotic, conciliatory "new kind of politics" crap is going to bite them in the a@@. Because the other side has no interest in being conciliatory or in seeing Obama succeed as President. Incredibly naive on Obama's part, and incredibly (albeit typically) weak on Reid's part.

Remove Lieberman from any and all committee chairs and let him decide for himself if he wants to caucus with the Dems or be a weasel and switch to the Rethugs. And if he chooses the latter, LET HIM GO.

It has been infuriating to watch the Democratic Party, Obama and Lieberman crawling around in this moral sewer getting filthy together for so long. Maybe Lieberman benefits. Everyone else comes up covered in scum.

Why did Obama weigh in on the Lieberman issue at all. Is getting a 60 vote majority worth losing our moral compass or selling our democratic collective souls over? I'm a democrat and a liberal at that and I say take Lieberman's chairmanships away from him and let the chips fall as they may. There isn't a single democrat voter who would suggest Lieberman should keep his committee chairs. I don't care if he flees to the Republican side. The last thing we need is Lieberman holding the senate democrats hostage just for a vote that isn't likely to be necessary for a majority.

((( "[He] might decide to stay and be bitter," said the [Evan Bayh]. "What would happen is from time to time we have close votes... If Lieberman doesn't know what to do and we've exacted revenge on him, I think we could expect the same in return." )))

What Joe's good friend Evan Bayh is basically saying here is that the Senator Lieberman he knows is a vindictive, petty man who would put his nation's well-being second to his desire for revenge. That, in a nutshell, sums up why Joe Lieberman should lose his Chairmanship and his place in the Democratic caucus.

Soon the myth of the monolithic Democratic party will reveal it's cracks and Senators like Liberman and his real "special Interests" will not only return but revive considerably.

Worst strategic blunder imaginable. This is not the way to get a majority. You've just let a fox into the hen house.

I don't really care about punishing Lieberman (there are more important things to worry about), but it makes no sense to have him chair a committee for which his views are in opposition to the Democratic party and the President-Elect. It's that simple.

I also don't think Lieberman will matter in the Democrat's effort to reach 60. He has stated that he wants the Republicans to be able to filibuster. If the Democrats do manage to win the three remaining undecided races, he'll probably either leave the Democratic caucus or vote with the Republicans when necessary to keep the filibuster alive.

On the bright side, I don't see him getting re-elected in 2012 no matter what happens.

Why not make some Republican the head of the HSGA committee? Better a Republican who hasn't participated in treacherous attacks than an "independenT" who has, IMO.

With his glowing speech at the RNC, Leiberman made it clear that he no longer stands for Democrats. He should have to EARN HIS WAY BACK to a leadership position...not just sit back down at the table as though he been a party loyalist.

He has openly REJECTED you! Get a clue!!! Dems can be so weak. Letting Lieberman kick you around and then rub your nose in it. It's a wonder you guys won at all. AND HE WENT TO GREAT LENGTHS TO KEEP THAT FROM HAPPENING! That should tell you a little bit about how cooperative he's going to be unless you make him EARN your trust again.

Incredible....

Did anyone else notice that Sen.Bayh didn't say one nice thing about Lieberman? In fact he painted the guy as little more than a petulant child.I agree with Our Rachel.Keeping Lieberman does more harm than good. For 2 years there has been only one question about the democrats:Were you born without a spine or did you have it surgitically removed?

Screw him.

It would be much better for the Dems to work with moderate Republicans than this self-serving, war-mongering Judas.

Throw the bum OUT !!!
