NEW YORK — MSNBC was the victim of a hoax when it reported that an adviser to John McCain had identified himself as the source of an embarrassing story about former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, the network said Wednesday.

David Shuster, an anchor for the cable news network, said on air Monday that Martin Eisenstadt, a McCain policy adviser, had come forth and identified himself as the source of a Fox News Channel story saying Palin had mistakenly believed Africa was a country instead of a continent.

Eisenstadt identifies himself on a blog as a senior fellow at the Harding Institute for Freedom and Democracy. Yet neither he nor the institute exist; each is part of a hoax dreamed up by a filmmaker named Eitan Gorlin and his partner, Dan Mirvish, the New York Times reported Wednesday.

The Eisenstadt claim had mistakenly been delivered to Shuster by a producer and was used in a political discussion Monday afternoon, MSNBC said.

"The story was not properly vetted and should not have made air," said Jeremy Gaines, network spokesman. "We recognized the error almost immediately and ran a correction on air within minutes."

Gaines told the Times that someone in the network's newsroom had presumed the information solid because it was passed along in an e-mail from a colleague.

The hoax was limited to the identity of the source in the story about Palin _ not the Fox News story itself. While Palin has denied that she mistook Africa for a country, the veracity of that report was not put in question by the revelation that Eisenstadt is a phony.

Eisenstadt's "work" had been quoted and debunked before. The Huffington Post said it had cited Eisenstadt in July on a story regarding the Hilton family and McCain.

Among the other victims were political blogs for the Los Angeles Times and The New Republic, each of which referenced false material from Eisenstadt's blog.

And in July, Jonathan Stein of Mother Jones magazine blogged an item about Eisenstadt speaking on Iraqi television about a casino in Baghdad's "Green Zone."

Stein later realized he'd been had.

"Kudos to the inventor of this whole thing," Stein wrote. "My only consolation is that if I had as much time on my hands as he clearly does, I probably would have figured this out and saved myself a fair amount of embarrassment."

"Martin Eisenstadt" was outed by a blogger way back in June. Here's the link:

FOX NEWS is the one who broke the story about Palin's lack of geographical expertise, so why is it that others are being blamed for the story being repeated. It is past time to stop talking about Palin all together. She is not news worthy and I am sick to death of hearing her voice and seeing her face. I saw Palin being asked about the Africa story and she never said whether or not she knows where it is and whether it is a continent. The woman is sorely lacking in national and international knowledge and that is a fact.

And yet when Palin was on camera trying to debunk this story, she said that of course she knew that Africa was a continent because Alaska had some kind of funding for a country in Africa, Darfur.

Except that Darfur is not a country, but rather a region within the Sudan.

But good for Sarah that she is now able to name all the countries in NAFTA. All three of them.

PEACE

Ok, back to the top for the nonreaders.

The person claiming to be the SOURCE of the story about Palin was a hoax!

The story ABOUT Palin is not a hoax!

Get it?

Good.

Ok, Dan Rather, jr. Keep pitching the "Fake but Accurate!" argument if it helps keep your hate & paranoia alive.

Election is over. We won. Someone alert MSNBC it is ok to start reporting news again. Why do so many here have to react to victory like the caricatures the right portrays us as. A lot of you could learn a lot watching the end of a Little League baseball game when the winning kids shake hands with the kids who lost at the end of the game. A league is made of many teams, and they are all needed to keep the league in tact and thriving.

You spend an awful amount of time undercutting progressives and subtly defending conservatives. All under the guise of 'should "we" be doing this?' type of questioning. Just sayin'...you're not fooling anyone, Frodo.

I watched Shuster report this story, and he said at the time that he had never heard of Eisenstadt, and that the story was in need of verification. Nice bunch of nasty piling on, though, folks. Give him another kick - who cares if he deserves it?

Shuster's one of the best, on any network.

Interesting that his own journalistic instincts were so good, even when handed copy from his producer (which of course means "use it now").

Are you kidding? Shuster is horrible! He's had to issue 2 groveling apologies on air in the last year for false reporting, not counting this latest embarrassment. He is also the man that reported that Rove would be indicted. Shuster is a complete joke.

The story itself is, apparently, real.

It certainly is believable, in any case.

Shuster pimped the wrong story? Why is not that surprizing? Dude, the election is over-we're through with you- your money is on the dresser. LOL

BOin08 is ragging on MSNBC again? Why is that not surprising? Dude, the election is over--we're through with you--your money is on the dresser.

I am AMAZED .. simply AMAZED at the number of people whose reading comprehension skills are SO LOW that they can't read this story correctly..

It's as if this site has been taken over by 7th graders.

dajay and dphilip and Bhola .. you should be embarassed, your lack of reading skills is shameful.

I'm amazed you are still beating this horse...the election is over and Palin lost. Are you scared she is going to come steal your lunch money? Give it up, Palin is a non-issue.

The Eisenstadt hoax (and not just the Africa hoax by MSNBC) is the funniest story of the election season!

Nawww ... I think the funniest story was Palin talking to Sarkozy !!! Giggle giggle, flirt flirt, toss hair, giggle giggle !

The story is not about Palin. It's about a leak and a source.

Did you read the article?

You should try a remedial course in reading comprehension.

The Africa story is from FOX.

The Africa story still stands.

Fox never said Eisenstadt was a source. Carl Cameron was embedded on the campaign trail, he talked to his source in the flesh.

I know you guys think that by trying to conflate the two you will confuse the whole story by the next campaign cycle, but I have some bad news for you.

Not only will the actual sources of the Palin stories make themselves known before then, they will have written books by then...

Enjoy!

“Embarrassed” should be spelled with two r’s. Always glad to help with reading comprehension skills.

Was this Schuster's story ? or was it copy that he read as he was anchoring?
did he have anything to do with vetting it?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:20 PM on 11/13/2008

The source of the story may be a hoax but the story itself is definitely not. Why would Bill Kristol go on the Sunday morning shows last week and defend Silly Sarah for her Africa is a country gaffe if it wasn't true? He looooooves her. She's his wet dream come true. He made excuses for her, saying that she had a lot of information to process in a very short time and she simply mispoke. At no time did he deny the story.

Exactly ladycubsfan: the HOAX is that someone pretended to be the SOURCE ... the information has not been debunked.

Palin supporters = not very bright !

You understand that it's your beloved Fox who broke the story about the dim bulb of the north not knowing anything? And that the original story has not yet been disproved?

Yeah. Thank you. All MSNBC saw was a chance to bash Palin a little more and didn't bother to check their facts out.

They are a big joke. Why don't they just close up shop, they make Fox News look credible.

ALL news outlets should be responsible to their FCC licenses for the accuracy of the sourcing of their reports. This would put a stop to these hoaxes.
