The 2008 presidential campaign is (finally) over, and we'd be remiss to not credit its two breakout stars: sassy 7-year-olds Sasha Obama and Piper Palin. Both got a lot of political practice in this past campaign, which is why we kind of want to nominate them to run for president in 2036.

See Sasha working the campaign trail below.

Sasha charmed America at the DNC following her mom's speech on August 25th. She commanded the microphone during the family's exchange with papa Obama, and when Barack said to Michelle "You were unbelievable" and then went on to say, to Michelle, "...and you also look very cute," Sasha, knowing that "cute" is normally her department, shouted, "Thank you!"

What an amazing, beautiful and confident little girl. She's a spitfire! She'll have all the Secret Service wrapped around her little finger by six weeks after she arrives.

Read that both girls want to be "actresses".. and have had classes in the dramatic arts, as well as music and dance, which accounts for the poise in front of an audience and camera.

Whilst I think she is adorable and also feel warm and fuzzy, mostly because of the familial love that is present ( I think wistfully of my own Father, a wonderful man and an African, who did not live to see this historic election); It is problematic to characterize a seven year old black girl as sassy, or any black woman as sassy at this late date.

For all of you not possessing black skin and ovaries, I'm here to let you know that 'sassy' is a no no. It's a played out stereotype that I am sick of. I could get my foot run over by a coworker and complain about it only to be informed that I am 'sassy' and then be told to calm down. This example is clearly hyperbole, but sadly is not very far from reality.

This is an esteemed paper with esteemed editors, diction matters. This whole article could have been (and seems to have mostly been about) spunk, stage presence, cuteness, precocity, why couldn't we choose a different word? Because these ingrained stereotypes in our brained reached for the word "sassy" and it resonated with the image of a black girl?.....

Just Sayin. Sorry to be preachy, but I've always felt that those in the sexual or racial minority were quick to tell others not to be offended. If you're not offended, maybe your demographic wasn't targeted. See if something pertains to you before you universally decided it's not a big deal.

"DICTION MATTERS" DUDE... WHY SAY "OVARIES?!"

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:40 AM on 11/16/2008

BY THE WAY DUDE, I'M BLACK TOO. SASSY IS JUST SEXUAL, NOT RACIAL

Callin' you out...Huff-Po also covered Piper Palin's "sassy" moments.

I can sympathize--they do it to us low class hillbilly gals too. "Sassy" is the first warning. "Insubordinate" is the second, and usually the last one. And it's always for saying something a guy could use to get a laugh, and get away with it.

Agree with the one lower if they called Sasha sassy and Piper cute then you may have an argument. But I think Piper's was on here first and for iamasocialist sassy means attitude with spunk, it's not sexual. I think Huffpost would do better than to call children sexy.

They are cute no doubt. And while they will be in for an adventure there will also be tough times adjusting to the lack of privacy and fewer spontaneous moments. Fortunately Grandma will be on hand to keep them comfortable and well-grounded.

Now, if you go look at Piper Palin's pictures, no one in the comments calls her "sassy." In fact, one commenter says that she doesn't see what's so sassy about Piper since she's not "flipping the bird" or "rolling her eyes."

Now, next time, maybe people should think about why they're offending someone else, rather than getting defensive about the lack of tact.

For me Piper doesn't have that same confidence, and she seems very self conscious in the sense of knowing she's being photographed and watched, whereas the two First Daughters are just natural. There's no "front" with them. You just know they would be the same whether they were at home with mommy and daddy or in front of billions of people on the world stage.

It's so clear that Malia absolutely adores her father. Look at many other pictures of her as she watches him take the stage. See how she takes the mike because she wants to tell him she loves him. And Sasha is just so darling. I love them both.

she is a very cute kid, both daughters seem very confident and comfortable on stage.
