WASHINGTON — Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman's chances of holding onto his committee chairmanship suffered a blow Friday when two key New England Democratic senators came out against him.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy and his Vermont colleague, Sen. Bernie Sanders, said Democrat-turned-independent Lieberman doesn't deserve to keep his Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs chairmanship because of his campaign attacks on President-elect Barack Obama.

Lieberman angered many Democrats by supporting Republican John McCain and criticizing Obama during the presidential contest.

Liberal activists are urging the party's caucus to strip Lieberman's chairmanship when caucus members meet next week. Senate Democrats are scheduled to meet next Tuesday to decide what to do.

"I am one who does not feel that somebody should be rewarded with a major chairmanship after doing what he did," Leahy, D-Vt., said in a Vermont Public Radio interview on Friday. "I never ask people, well you must vote for this person or that person. Everybody has to make up their mind."

Sanders, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, said he hopes Lieberman will remain in the party caucus and work to regain the trust of those he has disappointed.

"To reward Senator Lieberman with a major committee chairmanship would be a slap in the face of millions of Americans who worked tirelessly for Barack Obama and who want to see real change in our country," Sanders said in a statement. "Appointing someone to a major post who led the opposition to everything we are fighting for is not 'change we can believe in.'"

The issue of whether to punish Lieberman is a sensitive one for Democrats, given Obama's calls for bipartisanship during the 2008 race. Lesser penalties are also being considered involving Lieberman's committee and subcommittee posts.

Some of Lieberman's attacks on Obama "went beyond the pale," Leahy said.

"I would feel that had I done something similar that I would not be chairman of Senate Judiciary Committee in the next Congress," Leahy said.

Lieberman, who was Democrat Al Gore's running mate in 2000, was re-elected in 2006 as an independent after losing his state's Democratic primary. He remains a registered Democrat and aligns himself with Senate Democrats.

Obama has told Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada it would hurt the message of unity that he wants for his new administration if Lieberman leaves the Democratic caucus. Reid met with Lieberman last week and was initially inclined to strip him of the Homeland Security Committee chairmanship, according to a leadership aide.

Since then Reid has been working to find a compromise with Democratic supporters of Lieberman, including Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee. Dodd and Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., have said it would be a mistake if any punishment by the party causes Lieberman to bolt to the Republican side.

Lieberman also spoke last week with Republican Leader Mitch McConnell. Key Republicans, including Sens. John Ensign of Nevada and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, have said they would welcome Lieberman to the GOP caucus.

Lieberman's presence in the Democratic caucus was essential to the party's control of the Senate because he gave them a 51-49 edge over Republicans. But Democrats expanded their majority in the Nov. 4 elections and won't need Lieberman to control the chamber when the new Congress convenes.

Please contact the Senators on the Steering Committee and tell them what you think about Joe Lieberman maintaining his Chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee. Senators Bayh and Dodd have said his chairmanship can be easily revoked if he *misbehaves* again but this is not true. These senators are somehow failing to realize is that keeping Joe in a position of power will be damaging to the future of the party. Let's try to prevent that! Please contact their D.C. message line or email them and tell them your thoughts.

By gosh, I sure am proud of both of my Senators here in Vermont !

Vermontians (Vermont-ites?) (Vemontonians?) are obviously very excellent people. I should move there. My Senator Barbara Boxer is apparently too lacking in principal to take the *OBVIOUSLY* right stand on this.

Anyone else live in CA? Here, help me out:

Obama promised us that he is not perfect. So far he has been wrong about Liebermann twice. Once when he campaigned for his re-election and now. Please don't bash me, I ADORE Obama!

I like him too. I just hope he doesn't turn out to be a puppet to special interests. I'll be as disappointed as anyone, but I have to wonder why this Lieberman issue wasn't dealt with promptly and correctly. Makes me really wonder.

Lieberman's stance on HS has been argueably unconstitutional. He should have been removed either way as his politics do not fall in line with the the majority of democrats. The fact that he supported the Republican nominee while disparaging the Democrat seal the deal. He should be removed from that chairmanship.

In the waning days of the campaign, everytime you saw McCain on TV, there was Lieberman grinning in the background. What was all that about? Did he think McCain was going to win?

And what exactly happened back in Connecticut when he didn't get the Democratic nomination for Senate? He must have felt "burned" by the Dems, and this year was his payback (?)

He would get far less if he ran to the Republicans.
They have NOTHING to offer him, no committee chairs period.

Yeah, let him run to the republicans. I don't think it will hurt the dems one bit! First, if he wants to ever get re-elected in blue state Connecticut, he can't change his well known positions no matter which party he's in. He'll vote the the repugs on Iraq and vote with the dems on most social and economic issues. As a democratic turncoat, he already has shown that he'll do his own thing no matter which party he's in.

Joe should not retain his chairmanships, not because of retaliation, but because the whole country, not just Dems, believe the country has been going in the wrong direction. Joe is part of those who have steered us down the wrong course, and to set a new direction we need chairs that "get it."

We need new direction, and Joe can follow if he wants.

This story dropped to the bottom of the barrel in quick order; good thing I still subscribe to a newspaper. Wouldn't want the anti-Joe group to be heard much.

I would like to see Lieberman interviewed on The Rachael Madow show. Not only is he a turncoat he is ineffective in the Homeland Security position he now holds....Its time for him to step down or time for Dems as RM would say to get a political soul and strip him of his title.

Chris Matthews would be good too. But Liebermann doesn't have the gall.

"I would feel that had I done something similar that I would not be chairman of Senate Judiciary Committee in the next Congress," Leahy said.

Well stated Senator....your chances of remaining in your Judiciary Commitee post after pulling a Lieberman would be absolute zero. Additionally, this sets precident. It means that going forward similar acts could take place without repercussions.

are not republicans and conservatives always telling us that there are consequences for our actions???

well, there should be consequences for Lieberman; otherwise Democrats are seen as 'weak' and too permissive of bad behavior.

There are consequences and consequences. Our Dems are focusing on the latter.
