WASHINGTON — Former President Bill Clinton's globe-trotting business deals and fundraising for his foundation sometimes put his activities abroad at odds with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and could cause complications if President-elect Barack Obama picks her to be secretary of state.

During her own White House campaign, the New York senator criticized China for its crackdown on protesters in Tibet and urged President George W. Bush to skip the Olympics in Beijing. Her campaign was embarrassed by reports that her husband's foundation had raised money from a Chinese Internet company that posted an online government "Most Wanted" notice seeking information on Tibetan human-rights activists that may have been involved in the demonstrations.

Hillary Clinton has campaigned as a champion of workers' rights. This year, Brazilian labor inspectors found what they called "degrading" living conditions for sugar cane workers employed by an ethanol company in which Bill Clinton invested.

In the Senate, Clinton was an outspoken critic of a proposed deal under which a Dubai company planned to buy a British business that helped run six major U.S. ports. The company, DP World, privately sought Bill Clinton's advice about how to respond to the controversy over the port plan, which later was abandoned.

Obama met with Hillary Clinton on Thursday at his headquarters in Chicago, and some Democrats were enthusiastic amid speculation the pair discussed the job of secretary of state. She declined Friday to say anything about the matter, and Obama is understood to be considering other candidates as his top diplomat, including Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., Democratic Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico and retiring Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb.

Bill Clinton's fundraising for his presidential library and charitable activities also could pose additional headaches for his wife if he selects her for the job.

Since leaving the White House in early 2001, Bill Clinton has raised at least $353 million for the William J. Clinton Foundation, which finances his presidential library in Little Rock, Ark., as well as his global anti-AIDS initiative and other charitable efforts.

The former president has raised money overseas beyond the Chinese Internet company's contributions: from the Saudi royal family, the king of Morocco, a foundation linked to the United Arab Emirates and the governments of Kuwait and Qatar, The New York Times reported last year.

His foundation reaped millions of dollars from Canadian mining tycoon Frank Giustra, and Clinton accompanied Giustra on a 2005 trip to Kazakhstan, whose human-rights record Hillary Clinton had criticized, the newspaper reported. The pair met with Kazakhstan's president, and within days Giustra's company landed preliminary agreements giving it rights to buy into uranium projects controlled by a Kazakhstan state-owned enterprise. Clinton said he had nothing to do with the deal.

Louis Freeh, the FBI director under the former president, said Clinton sought a library donation from Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah during a discussion of the investigation into the deadly 1996 bombing of Khobar Towers U.S. military dormitory in Saudi Arabia.

Freeh wrote in his book "My FBI" that the FBI was trying to get Abdullah to let the FBI question suspects the Saudi kingdom had in custody and that Clinton failed to pressure Abdullah.

Clinton denied Freeh's account, and has said his business dealings and foundation fundraising pose no political conflicts for his wife. The former president has so far refused to identify donors to his foundation.

Matt McKenna, a spokesman for the former president, declined to comment on any potential difficulties that Clinton's activities could pose for his wife should she become secretary of state or whether the former president would alter any of his fundraising or other activities to avoid potential conflicts.

The Clintons have taken in more than $100 million since leaving the White House, thanks in large part to six-figure speaking fees charged by the former president and to his book royalties and partnership with Yucaipa Global Opportunities Fund, a Los Angeles-based investment firm founded by a longtime Clinton fundraiser.

Bill Clinton has cultivated the image of a senior statesman since leaving the White House and often makes speeches abroad. That role could be diminished if his wife were representing the Obama administration on international issues.

In a 6,400-word speech in London in March 2006, the former president laid out his views on a variety of world issues, including the Middle East peace process. Buried in the lengthy address were a few lines that could make a White House press office rush for damage control.

"The Palestinians are younger and poorer today than they were when we started the peace process in 1993," he said. "And I have never met a single poor Palestinian anywhere in the world except in the Palestinian territories. Every single Palestinian I know in America is a millionaire or a college professor, and I say that with deep respect, but when there is a conflict, when there is an absence of security, there is always an absence of opportunity."

Your prejudice towards Hillary is showing. Fact: If she really wants the job----its her's.

Getting used to it-is the problem.
That's how we got .....here.
'here' being what we want to CHANGE.

Clinton has denied many things. some of which have been deemed: perjury.
Although Bill denies he had anything to do with Frank Giustra's deal with
Kasakhstan, if pressed, he might recall they did arrive together, they did
go there for the express purpose of meeting with the President re: uranium
and of course, enjoying the cognac and cigars
and when Clinton returned to the US, he received a donation from Giustra
to his 'library' to the tune of somewhere around $140 million .
A coincidence? Giustra feeling especially generous all of a sudden?
Or possibly he just really enjoyed Clinton's Sax improvisations on their flight
to the uranium fields.

Bill Clinton's denials pack very little punch any more.
I don't think there's room in Egypt for all of them.
I think Bill Clinton would be a problem. As a narcissistic personality
he can't help but push himself to the front of every line, he certainly lacks scruples.
(check out his history while Governor and since he left the oval office) and he has little control
over his mouth. He's competitive with our President Elect.
Not so good.
Maybe an ankle bracelet to keep him near home.

I would like representatives in all positions to have clean hands, is that to much to ask? Its fine if they confer with former "players" but for reference only. I would like some progress and not just change. Look too the paste for learning and act today for our future.

Change does not necessarily come with a different face but an attitude which is always set by the leader. People are too quick to judge Obama because he is bringing in the 'same' people of the Clinton years - thinking that this process is not reflective of change, however what many are failing to realize is the agendas are different.

You probably don't have to look far to bring clarity to this analogy for I'm sure that each of us in some point in our life has changed jobs, whereby we were committed to follow one set of rules with Employer A then we did with Employer B (different objectives) but we were the same person at each place however we were given a different agenda, with each Employer hiring us to utilize the experience we possessed yet expecting us to adhere to their goals/objectives to achieve their definition of success.

When you are left with the mess we are currently in you hire the best of the best and most often than not that is achieved through previous experience. We don't have an economy that can withstand any on the job training. It wasn't the Clinton administration that was bad but their leader!

The article doesn't mention his strong support for the Colombian Free Trade Deal, and his enactment of Plan Colombia which has done nothing to stem the production and flow of Cocaine, but has done everything to make a bloody civil war even bloodier.

How will his palling around with drug dealers help Hillary, there are questions on the applications regarding family members.

ceti, your prejudice towards the Clintons is showing. I notice you left out that it was RAHM EMANUEL who sold Pres. Clinton on pushing NAFTA, GATT, and many of those Chinese treaty deals. So why are you v. Hillary but giving Emanuel a free pass?

Bill Clinton and the Bushes is why there needs to be transparency in finances, government, and communications. If Money can not disclose itself, it has no business being donated, given, or spent on anything. I hear that they are going to make a new dollar with us, Canada, and Mexico. To catchthecrooks of the world, when people come to trade their old dollars in with very large amounts, it would be feasible to ask people to prove how they made their money, prove they did not steal it from all the wiring in the banks going on overseas with this mess of cash that has no proper oversight.
12:32 AM on 11/17/2008
Oversight is a very big and scary word. Even Bill Clinton, (the best president we've ever had)
can't deal with it. These dealings will always be in Hillary's way. Not that I think Hillary is innocent in this. We all know how much she campaigned for his NAFTA agreement. And yet she campaigned saying it was wrong. Hillary will drop out, she could never get past a genuine vetting
process and she knows it. She just playing the (I must decide if I want it act) to save face.

You make some great points, but Im not sure what you mean by the last quote regarding Palestinians. it is true. The Palestinians are suffering in the occupied territories. Which raises another concern about Hillary as Secy of State, while Israel was cluster bombing civilian areas of Lebanon in the last skirmish, Hillary spoke at a pep rally supporting Israel. This was an outrage.

It is one thing to support Israel's right to exist. It is another to support Israel's right to break international laws and terrorize its neighbors (with US taxpayer money).
12:59 PM on 11/16/2008
Too few people know when or how to be outraged.
07:53 PM on 11/16/2008
You see it is fine points like this that tell you how much she leans to the right in foreign policy, and she has demonstrated this centre right attitude too many times on foreign policy. Ugh.
12:07 PM on 11/16/2008
I wonder how she would get back into Bosnia with a straight face (Bullets and all). Wait a minute, these are the Clintons, they have no shame.
12:04 PM on 11/16/2008
Now you see why Obama could not choose Hillary as the VP?

He would heve NEVER won the GE with her on the ticket; but she would do just fine as the SOS IMO!

For one thing he would never take the job. He is making millions on speaking fees and unlike the Bush family he doesn't have a legacy of huge wealth to fall back on. Not that he is poor but I'm sure he wants to make some more major $$ while he can. Also, once you have been president its very difficult to no longer be the top dog. I think that is especially true in Clinton's case. I can't see him following someone else's lead, even if that someone else is the president. Richardson would be a much better choice. One thing people haven't talked about much is the abysmal morale of the people in the state department. During the Iraq war the dept. was humiliated as the plans they had for how to rebuild Iraq were ignored (partly because they had been developed under Clinton) and responsibilities that should have been handled by the state department were handled (incompetently) by the Pentagon. We need someone who can rebuild the department and exert hands on leadership. Richardson would be perfect with his experience and quiet competent style. Either of the Clintons would be a disaster in my opinion but certainly not Bill.

plans they had for how to rebuild Iraq were ignored (partly because they had been developed under Clinton)??....

Clinton gets no credits for Iraq. He bombed them too! Add that to Hill voting for the war!!

I agree with you and its nice to see someone who can criticize Obama without saying they feel totally betrayed. He has one hell of a hard job and he is going to have to make compromises and some decisions that won't please everyone. Having said that I wouldn't criticize him so quickly. I mean except for Emanuel he hasn't actually made any decisions yet. While Emanuel is more to the right than I would like I think he is a decent pick. He is the kind of guy who can crack the whip and play bad cop while Obama is good cop. And in spite of all the publicity I still don't think Obama will pick Hillary for SOS. I think some of what is happening is the MSM is desparate to create a story and is making more out of some leaks than may really be there.

Oh yeah, and the dog was a great pick!

Why are the Clintons being brought back ??

What the Hell is Going on ?????

Remember that during the election, most of Clinton's team defected to Obama's side. For me, this was a huge reason for me to support Obama. I mean, if the people who know the Clinton's best are supporting Obama, there had to be a reason.

What Bill said about Palestinians was stating as it is. What is wrong with that?
There is a problem though for Hilary if she becomes SoS. I'm not sure that she would be able to keep the job apart from Bill Clinton's fund raising efforts because he has fingers in so many pies across the world. Could prove to be ammunition for the repugs particularly as they love him so much!!
I watched him in Florida with Obama and realised I had forgotton just what a powerful, astute and eloquent speaker he is.
Bill is a very intelligent man and a great mediator when it comes to bringing sides together. How on earth will he be able to keep his hands off.
I'd love to hear the pillow talk!!
