The Hill:

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) is batting down the hype that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin heads into 2012 as the frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination.

Palin energized the Republican base after GOP presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) tapped her as his running mate and she has tried to preserve her high public profile since Election Day.

C'mon Newt - think of your fellow history teachers out there.
Think of how much easier their jobs will be when they only need to cover the past 6,000 years.

And after 9-11 we all thought Rudy would be the next face of the party...and then Fed Thompson excited the base and was supposed to come in to the primary and "save the day!" And then Sarah Palin came in from the wild to save us... and none of these three have anything in common. See the problem? There is no coherent message to deliver from the Party itself. They rely too much on personality to distract us. Why Reagan and W were so successful in getting elected.

2012 is a loooong way away! Focus on the NOW people!

I agree. I tried to make this point on another thread. The Republican Party is falling apart because it has no clear foundation except tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and war for profit. On virtually every other issue of concern to Americans, they are merely the party of opposition. NO to immigrants, NO to gays, NO to special interest groups (poor people, college students, blacks), NO to the middle class, NO to secularism, NO to global warming, NO to stem-cell research, NO to free choice, and so on. Essentially, they are a party with NO substantive agenda, and a party that stands for nothing will fall for anything, ergo Guiliani, Thompson and Palin. They substitute fluff for substance, and actually vilify substance, such as the worthiness of community organizing, the academia and intellect, etc. They rely on fear-mongering because they have nothing else to offer, and they appeal to the lowest information voter, while at the same time discouraging participation of vast numbers of Americans in the election process, because this is the only way they can win. They have a lot of work to do to become relevant again, and we have a lot of work to do to keep this brand of Republicans out of power.

Sarah will not be a GOP leader. I agree with that analysis.
BUT - I've got a newsflash for ya, Newt:
Neither will you.

76% Republicans favor Sarah,
Frank Rich NYT,
"... post-election Gallup poll finding that while only 45 percent of Americans want to see Palin have a national political future (and 52 percent of Americans do not), 76 percent of Republicans say bring her on."

Governor Palin is going to have to learn to pronounce the words "Democratic Party" if she doesn't want to be perceived as a divisive, overly partisan, talk-radio obsessed Republan hack. Saying "Democrat Party" isn't very presidential.

Poor old Newt. He's been hanging around the edge of current events for more than 10 years now, just itching for a chance to grab the microphone and give the universe the benefit of his wisdom. Occasionally you'll see a reference to Newt and his "good ideas". Some of them may indeed be good; if five thousand ideas a minute pop into your head you're bound to come up with a winner now and then. I used to live in Newt's district. There was a reason he and his cronies were known locally as Newtie and the Blowhards.

An historical note: his district included the town of Kennesaw where by City Council edit every household is required to possess at least one gun.

Newt surely knows that she is a poison pill.
Stomp it out now to have any chance of actually having viability as a party in the future.............?

Newt is a hypocrite who doesn't even stand a chance himself. He sure is trying to get rid of the competition. Funny thing she has more supporters than he does. Those "values" supporters love her. Good for the Rethugs.
