The Kids Of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue: A Retrospective (PHOTOS)

Malia and Sasha Obama are about to take over as the reigning kids of the White House in January, when their dad, Barack Obama, is sworn in as the 44th President of the United States. There has already been a lot of talk about their impending move to Washington, with questions of whether their grandmother, Marian Robinson, will move with them as well as discussions of re-decorating. As they plan and anticipate, we decided to do a little preparing of our own: taking a look back at other "first children" during their time at the White House, stretching from Abe Lincoln's son Thomas to George W. Bush's twins Barbara and Jenna.

The picture of "Lemonade Lucy" says she is with 3 of her 8 children. The child kneeling on the floor is Carrie Paulding Davis, a the child of a friend. The other two children, Scott, second from the left and Fanny on the right were the youngest of her living children.

I love these people. Keep them safe please. I am delighted that Pres elect will be in the white house and not on the road in front of 100,000 people all the time, that was terrifying!

It's embarrassing to be white sometimes. The girls are so precious, their parents, brilliant! This is a multi ethnic, multi racial country. Get used to it, over it, or get out! You're not wanted. If you don't get that President elect Obama, is the People's President, than leave. Go elsewhere.

It's nice to see children back in the White House, the rest seem to have been all young adults.

I thought of Amy, too. Especially when everyone was going on about Michele O. asking Hillary about raising children in the White House. Always seemed to me the Carters managed Amy's privacy just fine.

When I thought of Presidential children Alice was the first one I thought of. She was supposed to have been quite the rip.
A light blue shade took on the name "Alice Blue" because she wore it often.

FDR's children weren't near as young as the Lincoln, Kennedy, or Obama children when he was in the White House. I believe his youngest children were teenagers in High School, or even older than that, when he first took office in 1933.

The reason that the press and other people are so interested by Malia and Sasha Obama is that they are the YOUNGEST First children since the Kennedy family occupied the White House. There have certainly been many other children who called the mansion home, but Amy and Chelsea were older when they got to Washington, and all the other children (those of LBJ, Nixon, and Ford) were far older, even though they were around the White House a lot.

The American people have always been fascinated by young children in the Whie House because they enliven a place that can be so stuffy and serious, and help humanize our leaders more than anything else is able to. When we think of great leaders like Lincoln, Kennedy, and Obama as fathers helping to raise their kids while President, it endears them to us in a unique way.

I only hope that Malia and Sasha are able to live normal and happy lives while under such an intense spotlight. I think the Clintons, for all the scandal that was always surrounding the Presidency, did a terrific job with Chelsea (even though she was slightly older than the Obamas).
