CNN's "American Morning" — which dominated its competition the morning after the election, with 2.1 million viewers — is facing increasingly tough competition from MSNBC's "Morning Joe" in the battle for second place in the cable news morning ratings race. "Morning Joe" won both total viewers and the demo last week, the week of November 10-14.

"Morning Joe" beat "American Morning" in total viewers three out of five days the week of November 10-14, according to Nielsen ratings (Monday, Thursday, and Friday - see below). For the week, "Morning Joe" averaged 605,2000 total viewers while "American Morning" averaged 578,000 total viewers.

In the advertiser-friendly Adults 25-54 demographic, "Morning Joe" beat "American Morning" two out of five days of the week November 10-14, according to Nielsen ratings (Wednesday and Friday - see below). For the week, "Morning Joe" averaged 245,600 A25-54 viewers while "American Morning" averaged 239,000 A25-54 viewers.

"Morning Joe" may be benefiting from a surge of mainstream attention to the program. In her post-election special, Oprah Winfrey said she loves the show, and host Joe Scarborough attracted significant attention after accidentally saying "f*ck" on air.

Fox News' "Fox & Friends" remains the top rated morning show on cable by significant margins.

Separately, "American Morning" fired eight staff members Friday — but insiders assured TVNewser, which reported the news, that the economy was not to blame:

An insider tells us the grim economic picture is not to blame. Those cut include writers and producers.

"This is driven by editorial changes in the program," a CNN spokesperson tells TVNewser. "The show has evolved and this staff restructuring will better meet the program's current editorial needs."

The insider also tells us the show is looking to hire three new producers.

Looks like morning demographic seriously tilted towards ignorance all around

Indeed. As well as misogynists and believers in nepotism.

The survey was chocolate per person, NOT Americans as a whole.

You gotta be kidding! Fox &b Friends #1? So nobody can just tell me, I've watched and compared all three shows and F&F is biased against all things democrat, and to boot sees little to nothing wrong with either Bush, Palin, or the repub party. F&F is the show the repubs appear in when they want to explain away their blunders, both in speeches and in votes and for soft-ball interviews, thanks to deliberately or unintentionally ignorant hosts.

I agree with so many of the other posts. The guests are the only reason I watch but I'm beginning to watch CNN more instead. Can't stand Joe and his daily rants. Mika used to be good but has lost it. Joe needs to be fired.

Joe is a republican, and he can't help himself but to wear the repub hat. Thing is, he says he is a repub, no hiding the fact.

I've found my mood much better in the morning on the way to work after I switched to CNN.

As reich leaning as Joe is and as enabling as Mika is, I still would watch them over anything at FAUX. What is with all the people watching that comedy channel? They must be in areas with nothing else on.

Joe and Mika are pathetic. The show is scum of all scum. I do not understand how some of his guest with such intelligence would bother to appear on that show. Pat Buchanan is pathetic also, Willie is wee, yes, wee Willie. Mike Barnacle I thought was okay, but apparently not. I just don't watch MSNBC except for Chris Matthews (sometimes), all the time for Keith Olberman and Rachel. I do enjoy David Shuster when I scroll MSNBC and find him. Morning Joe is as pathetic as FOX News. Unbelievable.

Joe is a creepy guy, possibly related to Chris Matthews.
who would want to listen to them?

If they would just have the show without Joe and Mka, just the guests, it would be a great show. If only Joe would let them speak without his stupid comments and sarcasm, it would be watchable. Mke Barnacle or Harwood would be much better. The only reason they get their ratings is because of their guests. It can't be Joe and Mika because they are pathetic.

You are right.. it is the guest!
Joe and Mika, just get on my nerves!
Barnicle I use to like, now I just find him smug.
It is funny, how you like these people, when they just do appearances, every now and then.. see them everyday... UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Won't even comment on Willie!!
It ANNOYS me to the ump degree that they all cowtow to that bully. Joe.

Joe and Mika = Regis and Kathy Lee

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:15 PM on 11/18/2008

Oh give Regis and Kathy Lee a break! Joe is a smart ass and Mika is a bimbo. I have yet to hear Mika say anything sensible without it being scripted and on paper in front of her. She can't come up with anything of her own. She is a waste on this show. She should go back to reading the news. As for Scarborough, I refuse to watch this show because he is just such a jerk. I so wish they would bring back Imus in the Morning. That was worth waking up at 4 in the morning for. But 'Mornin' Joe'?
No damned way!!

I agree with you, Joe is also talking aobut when he was in the Senate all the time, frankly what did he accomplish there? Why isn't he there now? Mika, I can't stand watching all her facial expressions, what is that all about, does she think it makes her look smarter or what?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:12 PM on 11/19/2008

Mika is not a bimbo. It's that she is so used to the high life style that at times she comes off as not knowing what she is talking about. There was one time when Joe, Mika, et al were talking about a survey as to how much Americans on average spent on chocolate per year, and Mika's answer was $100, 000! I repeat, she said $100,000! Mighty extravagant taste/bank account, I'd say. I wonder if there is the video of her making such statement out there for all of us to watch.

These ratings are amazing considering the fact that MSNBC isn't a regular cable channel in the south where I live. You have to have a digital plus package just to watch the channel. This is like HBO beating ABC.

Give Willie Geist and the "scoop" girl, Mike Barnacle and Erin Burnett the morning show. It would be better w/out joe and mika.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:40 PM on 11/18/2008

No, Willie is not any good either. Mike is OK, but the rest of the regulars are IDIOTS!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:37 AM on 11/19/2008

The show would be better with all new people, maybe even regular (non famous) people, like the people who write these comments. Maybe an imitation c span type show, but where regular people plus great guests come in and say their opinions, without interruptions by egomaniac or bimbo-ish hosts.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:36 AM on 11/19/2008

Interesting that Willie rarely if ever speaks when the others are talking politics. Doesn't the man have an opinion? After all, every other person is doing just that, giving his/her opinion!

I personally hate the show but watch it more than any of the others mainly because it is on "my news channel" MSNBC! Joe is an a$$ and always looking for a believable Republican talking point, Mika only says "Honey" to Joe and the other guy ????

With a real morning show that has the Evening feel and they will smoke Fix even with less possible viewers.

i admit...i probably would never have watched Morning Joe except MSNBC is usually the last channel I watch before bed...i started watching Morning Joe regularly the last few weeks before the election...guilty to also admit i was deeply enjoying the somber tone of defeat and denial...(grasping at the MASON DIXON POLLS...hilarious!) but i digress....

One thing i am really suprised at on the show...how Pat Buchanan seems pretty rational and articulate, especially compared to Joe. I have also seen him on other shows lately voicing his opinion and i must say, even when i dont agree with him he certainly seems much more rational than i remember. Did i miss something? Did he have an epiphany?
