Financial Times:

YouTube is in danger of being upstaged commercially by a smaller upstart backed by News Corporation and NBC Universal as the video-sharing site struggles to make its massive global audience appeal to advertisers.

Hulu, a video site showing only professional TV shows and movies, is forecast to draw level with Google's YouTube in US advertising revenues next year.

The feat suggests traditional media companies can make money online without having to cede control to Google, as the music industry did to Apple, whose iTunes music store dominates the digital music market.

Hulu is great. I live in a rural area and get TV through an antenna. When the digital switch comes, I will probably only get 2 of the 4 major networks. Hulu lets me watch "The Daily Show," "The Cobert Report," "The Office," and "The Simpsons" whenever I want. And the streaming is much less problematic than the streaming from Comedy Central. I was always having trouble watching Cobert and the Daily Show when I streamed from Comedy Central. Hulu has been problem free. And, probably just as importantly, the commercials are much less intrusive. On Comedy Central, they seem to jack up the volume for commercials to twice what it is for the main show. This is quite annoying. Hulu does not. In fact, I would say that half the time, the volume on the commercials is lower.

Hulu rocks. I hope they continue to expand their line up.

Hulu is worthless unless you live in the states. I can't get it overseas, so it's worthless garbage to me. I may not live in the states, but my need for US news doesn't decrease just because I don't live there.

Not so fast, folks. With the 2009 Digital TV changeover looming, in the throes of a recession. You may find more people watching TV online (and for FREE no less) for short 10sec. ads. All you need is a decent broadband connection. HULU may end up being one of the early sources of online TV that we've all read about. Some networks (Like FOX/ABC) have superior systems up already. This may be an opportunity for us to really change how we watch TV: at OUR convenience. Apple computers are seemingly bred for this kind of thing (big +20 screens, HD ready), the PC world has to join the 21st century to keep up.

hulu isn't available outside the U.S. it seems.
I'm inclined to boycott anything to do with with murdoch or newscorp. I'd also look at anybody putting anything up on there for that reason with a great deal of skepticism as to their intentions or veracity.

You Tube and Hulu use different file format. On my computer YouTube plays without any problems and Hulu drags it's hills, stopping and buffering every a few seconds, which makes it impossible to watch. So, from my prospective as a viewer, it's not a competition, as I gave up on Hulu after several attempts.

Youtube will never have to worry. Hulu will have its place and YouTube will KEEP it's place for sure.

Hulu will never overtake YouTube and other online streaming video sites in capturing the global audience.

'Global' is the operative word, considering a fact that Hulu is restricted to the US audience only, thus bringing in US-only advertising revenues. YouTube and the rest have nothing to worry about, really.

Youtube is in no danger of being upstaged, unless hulu starts becoming available to viewers outside of the US as well. As it is now, it sucks!
