I'm one of the fortunate few who has the original comic book series when it came out in the mid 80's. When I read the entire series, I was so blown away. I never thought they would or could make a film about the Watchmen. I sure hope they can pull it off. After reading the series, I knew I had a collectors item and will keep it in my collection for years to come!

Is this set in the past or in an alternate Earth where everything is retro?

yes...

In the clip they actually called themselves the Watchmen (at two or three different points) but in the story itself they were called the Minutemen...I know it's a small nitpick but I guess that's what separates the people who actually read the story from those who did not.

Actually, there were two groups mentioned in the book. The Minutemen were from the 40s, while the Crimebusters were part of the 60s. I'm holding out hopes that the trailer included looped dialogue that isn't in the film. After all, there was no mention to trainspotting in Trainspotters, no one shivered in The Big Chill (outside of the "it's a cold world out there" dialogue), and no one referred to Wallace as "Braveheart." I'm hoping the studio will accept the idea that people don't have to be spoonfed.

As for the squid vs. no squid (from previous posts), I'm pretty confident that this will be the closest thing to an accurate portrayal of the series outside some kind of 12 hour limited series on HBO or something. There are already scenes in the trailer that I wasn't sure would make the cut (everything on Mars, for one). I'm withholding judgement until I see it next March, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

Gee if we only had The Watchmen we could clean up Wall St. and our corrupt Treasury Dept..!

Read the book.
You'll regret having ever said that.

Those aren't the only things they ' clean up ', hyuk hyuk.

Does anyone else feel like they're ODing on comic book movies lately?

Yeah, but it's serving as Sarahectomy to cure my Palinotosis.

I think you're referring to this film's ' visuals '.
More like a seizure.

No, I'm referring to how nearly every movie in the past year has either been an adaptation of an existing comic book or a satirical take on the entire genre. I declared a personal moratorium on them after finishing the book DEVIL'S CAPE.

What was the song playing???

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:56 AM on 11/17/2008

Sounds like Radiohead.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:23 PM on 11/17/2008

No, it's nothing like Radiohead. Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins did some music for it.

Sounded like Muse... operatic vocals and synth sweeps... yeah, definitely Muse. The previous trailer featured "The Beginning is the End is the Beginning" by Smashing Pumpkins.

Its Take A Bow from Muse. Its the first song on their album Black Holes and Revelations. Its a great CD.

The first song is from Philip Glass' Koyaanisqatsi. Rent it. Buy the sound track.
It morphs into the contemporary song about halfway through.

Boohoo - is that JDM flying out the window? I LOVE him in pretty much anything - I hope he doesn't go out early in the film!

It is, and he does, but he keeps popping up in flashbacks.

Pity he seems to be in a dressing gown though. Not really a great look for a superhero...

Ah that look soo cool. I dont often see movies but that one seems to be a must. :)

On a broader note: i just hope noone gets the bright idea to do a "Sandman" movie.

I read somewhere that there are almost 400 movies in one phase or another that were born from a comic book/graphic novel. Be afraid, be very afraid that they might just start slapping crapola up on the screen. Having said that; if Watchmen is true to the story of the GN then it should be pretty infallable as long as the dialogue isn't altered too much.

This is the thing w/ the squid from hell at the end? Never could get into it....

There is already more than one article out stating that the director has changed the ending from the original graphic novel, and there will be no squid in it.

Which is why it's gonna be a sissified, looming pile of tripe.

Saw the trailer in the theater Saturday nite before Quantum of Solace.

QoS couldn't TOUCH the Watchmen trailer.

This from a Bond fanatic.

I'm not a comic book fan by any means, but the original graphic novel version of this foisted on me back in the 80s by my friends just blew my mind. In March I'll be watching my first superhero movie in YEARS and years.
