Prince Talks Religious Conversion, Anti-Gay Marriage Stance

Prince

Update 2:50 pm

According to Perez Hilton, Prince is now claiming that he was misquoted in the interview:

Apparently, the interviewer did not even use a recorder when she spoke with His Holy Purpleness, and that when she called his people to fact check, it turned out she had several factual inaccuracies, including a little bit about Prince recovering from hip surgery, which he never even had... What His Purpleness actually did was gesture to the Bible and said he follows what it teaches, referring mainly to the parts about loving everyone and refraining from judgment...

"We're very angry he was misquoted," says our Prince insider.

***PREVIOUSLY***

The New Yorker has an interview with Prince at his new Los Angeles home to talk about a new book, and during it talk turned to religion.

Seven years ago, he became a Jehovah's Witness. He said that he had moved to L.A. so that he could understand the hearts and minds of the music moguls. "I wanted to be around people, connected to people, for work," he said. "You know, it's all about religion. That's what unites people here. They all have the same religion, so I wanted to sit down with them, to understand the way they see things, how they read Scripture."

Prince had his change of faith, he said, after a two-year-long debate with a musician friend, Larry Graham. "I don't see it really as a conversion," he said. "More, you know, it's a realization. It's like Morpheus and Neo in 'The Matrix.' " He attends meetings at a local Kingdom Hall, and, like his fellow-witnesses, he leaves his gated community from time to time to knock on doors and proselytize. "Sometimes people act surprised, but mostly they're really cool about it," he said.

Recently, Prince hosted an executive who works for Philip Anschutz, the Christian businessman whose company owns the Staples Center. "We started talking red and blue," Prince said. "People with money--money like that--are not affected by the stock market, and they're not freaking out over anything. They're just watching. So here's how it is: you've got the Republicans, and basically they want to live according to this." He pointed to a Bible. "But there's the problem of interpretation, and you've got some churches, some people, basically doing things and saying it comes from here, but it doesn't. And then on the opposite end of the spectrum you've got blue, you've got the Democrats, and they're, like, 'You can do whatever you want.' Gay marriage, whatever. But neither of them is right."

When asked about his perspective on social issues--gay marriage, abortion--Prince tapped his Bible and said, "God came to earth and saw people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever, and he just cleared it all out. He was, like, 'Enough.' "

Guys - Prince is not anti-gay. He has had many gay members in his band including Wendy and Lisa from the Purple Rain days. He recently invited them to play on one of his albums and has said many times to many people that they are "two of my best all time friends". I personally don't agree with his anti-gay marriage stance (if he has one) but listening to his lyrics and seeing who he has associated with and befriended over the years one could hardly judge him as "anti-gay".

Please keep your magic sky beings and vengeful deities to yourself. These misinterpreted mythical/biblical children’s stories are abused with the intent to create and ostracize “the Other,” in this case, gays. The people who founded our nation wisely established freedom FROM religion as well as freedom of religion.

Here’s how the Democratic Party and Barack Obama can solve the gay marriage issue.

Behind the Scenes: Glamorous Life
This week, in Talk of the Town, Claire Hoffman visits the home of Prince. He lives in a thirty-thousand-square-foot Italianate villa, built by Vanna White’s ex-husband. Hoffman talks about what it was like to meet Prince, and shares a couple of prints from his new book, “21 Nights,” a collection of stylized portraits taken while Prince was in London last year.

Read the article in it's entirety before you decide to pass judgement on the man!

And No! he was not quoting the Bible there...just giving his overall observation of what is actually said!
Like an "in other words" comment! And who knows for sure if that was "his" actual words, right? JW's don't go out and protest either...they remain neutral. So...he was not "bashing" anyone, just saying what he understood the Bible to mean on that or those subjects! He was asked the questions, and he just answered them! Nothing wrong with that! :)
P.S. Isn't that the point of an interview???

So as a former bi-sexual he now suddenly has a problem with people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever? Isn't being born again great!

Let's be clear - it wasn't Prince who said he was misquoted, or even a representative of Prince.

It was PEREZ FRICKING HILTON.

Therefore you can be sure: Prince said exactly what the New Yorker quoted.

So your statement in the Update box is incorrect. Prince is not claiming he was misquoted. Perez Hilton is claiming that somebody told him they think Prince was misquoted.

Say good bye to relevancy, uh whatever your name is now. You just slashed away about half your remaining fans and squelched getting any new ones. Can't wait for your next album with Chuck Norris.

How do you misquote having hip surgery? lol...that's weird! I mean hip surgery doesn't even rhyme with anything sensible. Did the reporter just make it up? Who are we to believe. I'm sure I won't sleep tonight now.

I know my gaydar is off because I didn't realize Wynda Sykes is gay as I said in that post. I also didn't know Rosie was either ... but, I always thought Prince was. So apparently I'm way off.

Anyway, why does he care of gay people marry. It's not going to effect how he lives his life. Live and let live.

So what's the big flap about? Prince is not gay and is not for gay marriage and has found God and didn't have hip surgery. Good for him.

Tolerance is a two way street, is it not?

My stepson has moved in with me and my husband and he is 17 and JW was all he was taught by his mom and her side of the family, BUT now he lives in a Christian house hold and I CAN NOT ALLOW those watch towers in my home, he understands and he said that they never taught him anything else but now he wants to see what HE wants. One thing I can say about JW they are very judgemental, and if you make money like Prince, Micheal Jackson, Venus and Serena and you are contributing to the Kingdom Hall then you can do what you dam well please. When we were kids we could not open the door for those people nor do I open the door now I have a sign on my door and I think that keeps them away and it saids We can not be swayed this is and will always be a CHRISTIAN HOME have a blessed day.

I've only known a few JWs and as far as i was aware, they were not allowed to listen to rock music or anything "un-spiritual" - they would definitely have been frowned upon for watching "The Matrix" I'm sure! What does Prince sing about these days then? Surely not 22 positions on a one night stand!!

And why are rock/pop stars so intent on letting us all know what their religion is? I don't care about that, just sing me a song dammit - and while you're at it, lose the "chastity ring".... it's no more impressive to know you have never had a shag (yes, I'm British) , in fact less so, than if a pop star started wearing an "I'm having sex in a responsible manner and always use a condom" ring!! Sorry, I have digressed but really.....keep it zipped unless there's a tune issuing forth!!

Dear Prince: Fan's Blog Response 2 the New Yorker interview
As much as we love him/his musical genius, many of us aren't so high on the purple kool-aid to not know that Prince has said and done some bizarre--or even messed up--things over the years... If what the reporter in the "New Yorker" magazine interview has quoted him as saying is true... he could lose a huge part of his fan base -- and income.
I'd like to invite you to read an open letter to Prince from one of the fans who would like (and, I think, deserves) an explanation... some clarification on what he actually, truly said that day to the reporter. Not from his "people," but from Prince's own lips.
