Chuck Norris

Huckabee-supporting martial artist Chuck Norris has written his latest column for townhall.com on the passage of Prop 8 in California, calling demonstrations in its wake "anarchy." The article, entitled "If Democracy Doesn't Work, Try Anarchy," ends with the following:

The truth is that the great majority of Prop. 8 advocates are not bigots or hatemongers. They are American citizens who are following 5,000 years of human history and the belief of every major people and religion: Marriage is a sacred union between a man and a woman. Their pro-Prop. 8 votes weren't intended to deprive any group of its rights; they were safeguarding their honest convictions regarding the boundaries of marriage.

On Nov. 4, the pro-gay community obviously was flabbergasted that a state that generally leans left actually voted right when it came to holy matrimony. But that's exactly what happened; the majority of Californians -- red, yellow, black and white -- voted to define the margins of marriage as being between one man and one woman. California is the 30th state in our union to amend its constitution in doing so, joining Florida and Arizona in this election. Like it or not, it's the law now. The people have spoken.

Chuck, Chuck, Chuck what happened to you? You used to command so much respect and now you're just a joke. The right-wing nut jobs are just using you and you are too simple to understand that. It always seemed to me that tolerance was his credo but I can see that it is not. Unless he can tell me one way that two gay people being able to marry materially or otherwise affects his marriage, he is as bigoted as the rest of the whack jobs on the right.

Sanctity of marriage, my a$$. Chucky boy is already on his second marriage, what’s so sanctified in that? BTW, Chuck, if your first marriage was actually a “traditional marriage” you wouldn’t have been able to get divorced. That’s right WE CHANGED this countries marriage laws about fifty years ago TO ALLOW DIVORCE. Chuck is just another jerk spouting the right wing/church lies and talking points. Let’s just never buy his products or watch his stupid infomercials.

Please keep your magic sky beings and vengeful deities to yourself. Those misinterpreted mythical/biblical children’s stories are abused with the intent to create and ostracize “the Other,” in this case, gays. The people who founded our nation wisely established freedom FROM religion as well as freedom of religion.

Here’s how the Democratic Party and Barack Obama can solve the gay marriage issue.

Chuck is on his second marriage to a woman, NOT a man.

Marriage is a sacred union between a man and a woman.

Marriage is between Steve and Janice, not Steve and Larry or Janice and Judy.

Marriage is a sacred union between a man and a woman.

Same Sex couples should have rights, so something needs to be created for them, not changed.

Remember marriage is also a legal contract between two adults ratified and enforced by the state, not necessarily with the involvement of anything sacred or religious. My marriage to another man in Massachusetts was carried out by a Justice of the Peace, just like many millions of other weddings in the US that were not performed in churches, temples or mosques.

Anarchy?
This counrty was built on it. Can you say Boston tea party chuckles.
Never forget that the founding fathers were considered anachist at the time.
What we are talking about is a civil contract between two consenting adults, not a religish rite.
We are supposed to have a government for and by the people, and until the govenment lives up to that promise to ALL people we are going to protest.

And really the response to Prop 8 is quite mild compared to the riots after Dan White was not convicted of murder for killing Harvey Milk and George Moscone, or the riots after the assassination of Martin Luther King. People whose rights were violated by Prop 8 do have a First Amendment right to demonstrate their anger.

"...it's the law now. The people have spoken."

Not so fast, Walker. It's not law if it's challenged and tied up in the courts. Or if the next cycle of Propositions reverses it.

One can only hope sanity will prevail.

Dear Chuck,

You're on your 2nd marriage. Congratulations. Now can I have just 1?

The State forcing churches to marry gays violates the seperation of church and state. Churches have the right to marry whomever they please. What we need is a federal standard for fully-legal civil unions, applicable in all 50 states. That's what Obama wants to do.

The state forcing anything is a canard. It is simply to give two people the rights and standing that all other two-peoples have. No forcing, no changing, just the inclusion of ten percent of the population.

Like the state forces the Catholic Church to marry divorcees? Or like the state forces mormon churches to marry non-Mormons?

Oh wait! The state doesn't do that, and you are a propagandist. Stop spreading untruths in order to bolster your own bigotry.

No church will ever be forced to marry someone who doesn't fit their standards. Ever seen a Catholic married in a Synagogue?

But Prop 8 forces a church's idea of marriage on my government. Church and state must be separate. We're talking marriages in the courthouse, not in the church house. Learn your facts and stop consuming propaganda.

Dear Chuckles - Those who will fight to ensure that a Constitution is not used to Eliminate Rights are NOT Anarchists -- They are Patriots!

Nothing is ever given to you, if you sit back and expect to be GIVEN it. Expect to be disappointed. Lack of organization that I noticed from the gay community was their downfall. Football teams don't bitch when the other team has more money to buy better players. Problem was it was EXPECTED to win in California. And what a shock that it didn't and NOW the marches, protests, etc.. all start happening. Sorry.. a minute late and a dollar short..

"holy" matrimony? Further evidence of using religion to discriminate against others. 5000 years of traditional bigotry does NOT justify continuing to do so.

5000 years ago.. That's just 1000 years after dinosaurs were still walking the face of this earth... I wonder if any reproduction-oriented definition of marriage has anything to do with memories of their rampaging through human society...

I was raised a catholic, changed to the Episcopal Church, and finally have given up on organized religion. Part of the reason is the gay rights issue. As a fifty something heterosexual who has been married for 35 years I really dont have any skin in this fight but it seems to me to deny anyone personal dignity and happiness is not godly and probably unconstitutional.
The "sanctity of marriage" argument is a joke. According to divorcerate.org the divorce rate for 1st marriages is 50%, second marriages is 67% and third marriages is 74%. If these numbers are anywhere near correct, I say give gay couples a shot because they can't screw up marriage anymore than heterosexuals already have.

When anyone's rights are being denied unlawfully, we all have a dog in that fight. If they will do it to them, they will do it to me.

Are all of you commenting thus far, really that daft? You are so enslaved by your cause and your own form of bigotry that you completely miss the point of the article.

The point is that all homosexuals expect tolerance from society, and they SHOULD. However, when you don't get YOUR way, tolerance is the first thing you throw out the window. You don't want to be bullied however, it's the first tactic you resort to when you don't get your way. I hope the victims of the attacks he mentions are able to prosecute under the hate crimes laws. It is apparent that those he mentions are being attacked for their conservative, and most often, religious beliefs.

It goes both ways you know? The only thing that the protests are proving is what cry babies you are. Every time one of these stories makes news, you lose that much more respect and therefore lose ground in your cause. Keep up the great work!

If you had the state telling you whom you could marry, you would be a "cry baby" too.
