SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — For the first time, defense lawyers have been allowed to see a section of the Guantanamo prison that is so restricted, even its location on the U.S. base is secret.

Two military lawyers for Ramzi Binalshibh, an alleged plotter of the Sept. 11 attacks, were granted 90 minutes on Tuesday evening to view Camp 7, a section for "high value" detainees that has been shrouded in mystery since it opened two years ago.

The attorneys are trying to determine if their client is mentally competent to stand trial and to gauge the effects of the prison-within-a-prison on a man who, according to court documents, is so unstable that he believes his bed shakes and noxious odors are pumped into his cell.

Both lawyers, Navy Cmdr. Suzanne Lachelier and Lt. Richard Federico, said they were barred revealing what they saw on the tour.

"It was helpful. It was worthwhile," Lachelier told The Associated Press in one of the few comments she could make about the visit.

In a phone interview Wednesday from Guantanamo, Lachelier said she and co-counsel Lt. Richard Federico viewed the cell of Binalshibh, the adjacent cells, medical facilities and a room where detainees can watch movies.

They were taken to the camp in the same type of closed van used for prisoners, to conceal their route.

Binalshibh, who is from Yemen, was captured in September 2002 after a shootout in Pakistan, has been in Camp 7 since September 2006 when the U.S. transferred a group of alleged terrorists to Guantanamo from secret locations overseas.

They have been held separately from other prisoners to prevent disclosure of national security information, and have received visitors from the International Committee of the Red Cross, said Navy Cmdr. Jeffrey Gordon, a Pentagon spokesman.

In recently filed court papers, military prosecutors say Binalshibh has complained of the bed shaking and strange smells. They also say he claims guards manipulate the cell temperature to make him uncomfortable and make noises to keep him awake.

The prosecutors, without providing details about the camp, deny Binalshibh's allegations and say he is not subjected to "prolonged" isolation.

"He has available to him outdoor recreation, socialization with a recreation partner, the ability to exercise, access to library books twice a week, the privilege of watching movies and may meet with his attorneys upon request should he so choose," prosecutors wrote in a motion opposing the defense request to see his conditions.

Binalshibh and four other Guantanamo detainees have been charged in the attacks that killed 2,973 people, the bloodiest terrorist strikes ever on U.S. soil. The charges carry a possible death sentence.

A judge has ruled there are enough questions about Binalshibh's mental health to require a competency hearing to determine if he can stand trial. Military doctors have evaluated him but their findings are secret.

His lawyers have previously said he has been given medicine used to treat schizophrenia but have not disclosed his exact mental condition. A hearing on his competency has not yet been scheduled.

The U.S. holds about 250 men at Guantanamo, including 16 men in Camp 7. The military has said it intends to prosecute about 70 prisoners in war crimes trials.

Water boarding is torture, some of you soulless folks have suggested it is not, or is not US law.

During the Clinton years, WTC and other terrorism cases were tried in the Southern District of New York and convictions were obtained. The bastards who were convicted are still rotting in jails. The system worked then and it would have worked following 9/11 - without trashing the constitution, tormenting the innocent, and generating hatred for us around the world - but for the Republicans who promised us they knew a better way.

They didn't. And we'll be hearing "new" horror stories about Guantanamo for years to come, but not soon, because except in a few cases honor doesn't come wearing an American uniform anymore.

Cheney, Rumsfeld, Bush, and all the incompetent military commanders who sucked up to them instead of resigning in contemptuous protest share the blame for America's shame at Guantanamo and eight years' worth of military, moral and diplomatic failures in Afghanistan, Iraq, Central Asia and the Middle East.

Stay tuned. Obama and his people are stuck with this mess, and let's hope they fix it and then put the blame where it belongs - and get the Justice Department involved in prosecuting the guilty and the once who kept silent when they knew crimes were being committed.

They convicted some murderers last year, yet people still get murdered. How does that happen? Why don't they do something to stop all of the murderers? They should just lock everyone up.

Let's say we close down Gitmo, what do we do with the people?

The countries they came from or were captured in want nothing to do with them, do we release them in California or something?

Would a pre-emptive pardon of himself & his associates by W be constitutional, legal, be honored by BHO & be honored by International Tribunals? W & Co are persisting in a pattern of crimes against humanity & other Int'l law. If W & crew avoid being tried for crimes against humanity incident to W's war on terror it will be an abortion of justice, at the least.

One guy even confessed to being Bin Laden. I guess we have Bin Laden now, huh? I wonder what you would confess to under duress like that. That is why it's illegal to torture people and why confessions made under duress aren't admissible in court-- there is no reason to believe that they confessed to anything for any reason other than to stop the treatment.

Torture and Guantanamo are two reasons why America has lost her respect in the world. A former role model for freedom and justice has sunk to the lowest level of state terrorism. This will not simply go away because Obama is elected. He will have to take measures to re-install habeas corpus etc. You will have to deal with this ugly past, otherwise your future is poisoned.

I look forward to justice becoming the rule of law again in this country, and Gitmo and all others like it are closed and shuttered for good. I'd like to see them removed from our sights as well as those despicable "leaders" who turned America into Terrorists. This administration always said what it does works since we had no more terrorist attacks. Why should they when Bush and Cheney have done it so well for them?

I think you are on to something. His other two complaints, changing the temperature of the room and making loud noises at night, are well documented tactics our nation has used against other detainees. However, if a person is subjected to enough sleep deprivation and other tactics of touchless torture, he or she will be metally broken, possibly permanently. For that reason among others, Guantanomo, Abu Ghraib, and Bagram AFB are part oft a very unflattering chapter in our history.

Doesn't it make you feel just a little bit sick at your stomach? I mean think about it we actually have people that live among us that are willing to torture, injure, or even kill other human beings, people that have done nothing to them!
But as bad as that may be, to think that we have people high up in our government, that think torturing people is a wonderful thing to do.
How do people with such low intelligence, or no conscience manage to get into these positions?

It is truly shameful that people that have set themselves up as leaders have done so for purely selfish reasons. Instead of the good for our country and it's people.

How ironic that the military intends to pursue "war crimes trials," when its own actions constitute war-crimes?

If we focus our attention upon "who is the commander most ultimately responsible for this, who knew or should have known?" You know who, and his crony you know who else. Of course.

And who else? Yup. Senators Barak Obama, John McCain, and Hillary Clinton along with 97 others. And 500+ others.

And the bottom line is: the world knows it. They might not be able to hold the "Washingtonburg Trials" in reality, but they will always hold it in their future relations with this country.

If that is the case, it still doesn't justify treating anyone in an inhumane manner. The United States of America is capable of treating everyone with dignity and respect lest we become something despicable.

I really do not understand what is to be gained by the neandrethal thought process that justifies our bahaviors sinking to that of the lowest common denominator. Unfortunately, that concept has spread from the upper reaches of our governement to the postings of Ramirez.

I hope that sometime soon, it becomes apparant to that the security purposes of our nation are not served by the insanities happening at Gitmo. All that is being served is the crass desire for revenge.

The Gitmo detainees are well fed and well treated. They get exercise and prayer time. They are provided with prayer rugs and Korans. The Korans are carefully handled by infidels wearing gloves so they are not defiled. The detainees have lawyers.

Many of them have been released. Most of them have no country to return to because their home countries would not treat them as they are treated in the US legal system.

Our behaviors are not "sinking to that of the lowest common denominator." We now have a new president. We will see what changes he brings. Perhaps he will give reparations to these detainees.
