Fox News' Shepard Smith was very upset over an email he received regarding his discussion of the potential bailout of the auto industry, and he was not afraid to show it. Smith read the whole email on the air, and then repeatedly insulted the man, starting off by acknowledging he mispronounced the emailer's name, but flatly declaring he "didn't care." Watch it.

Shepard Smith makes a really good point. Where and When does the buck stop?

Pretty sure the UAW's life draining labor contracts are what's causing this massive cash hemorrhage. I mean, honestly, who gets paid a pension 30 years after they stopped working for the Big Three. The UAW of course!

its a loan not a bailout. the cost of not doing it will be more expensive than the 25B

shepard smith, is just like most republicans, i didnt hear him complain about the bailout of AIG, or merrill lynch,or any other of the rich republican wealth power structures that exist, the ones that are too big to fail, if we can bail out AIG, THEN WE SURE AS HELL CAN BAIL OUT THE BIG THREE!!! 3 million middle class jobs depend on it, and those morons that want to gut the unions, can just forget it, BARAK OBAMA SUPPORTS THE UNIONS, AND WE WILL NOT LET THEM BE GUTTED LIKE REGAN DID THE AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS!!!

As someone who despises faux news I have to say I agree with their guy, where DO taxpayers stop bailing out mismanaged businesses ?
If the car companies had been manufacturing energy efficient small cars and spending money on forward thinking R&D i'd be a bit supportive but when you've been pumping out gas guzzling BIG cars despite knowing that the world needs SMALL efficient cars ...well then ... take a hike.

Shame the workers can't take over the businesses and get busy making cars that make sense.

Who stood in the way of them making car that make sense, " THE RICH ASS OIL LOBBY IN WASHINGTON" you need to investigate the situation before posting something you clearly know little about!! they have been trying to make better high mileage cars for years, and the oil lobby blocked every bill that would have made changes in the law that would have allowed that to happen!!!

Those poor, poor victims! Oh yes, the oil lobbies insisted that American car makers produce Hummers and oversized SUVs. Give me a break.

I sure as hell don't trust oil companies to do the right thing, but I sure as hell don't trust the car makers either. If it is so incredibly difficult to manufacture hybrid cars, then why are they selling like hotcakes?

I'm sorry about the nightmare that these autoworkers are facing, but instead of spending money on this short-sighted, greedy industry, I'd rather spend it on retraining the workers and R & D for better vehicles.

Interesting how he hears the name "Fuentes" and automatically relates it to "yard work" and "Lawn care". FOX apparently will always be crawling with bigots.

your taking offense to that, give me a break

The email was right about one thing, "Shelby doesn't like union" nor does Shelby give a rip about automaker outside his state. Shleby and the rest of the republicans with Japanese, Koren etc auto manufactures in their back yard only care about them. NOT AMERICA!!!!

Another FOX CRYBABY who gets all defensive when questioned about something. Smith IS anti-union when he should be anti-executive. Just because the workers get an good salary, doesn't excuse the fact that the CEO's are filthy rich and incompetent. The auto companies fought against changes to their vehicles for 30 yrs. and now they want a hand-out. Give it to them, but make sure the execs don't get a penny of it until they get their auto plants up and running in a new direction.

Just because Smith has had a couple of good moments, doesn't change the overall fact that FOX is a WORTHLESS news source.

I did not see one point where he was on the defense. The workers are overpaid, to do the job they do, as well as you may say that the executives are. Just because you are rich does not mean that you are greedy. There is little these executives could do with their companies because they paid their workers so good for so long. Well they can't afford to do it anymore. Workers and executives need to take a cut I agree. But don't just blame the top, the unions have a play in this too. and yes my father works for the big three and I am not rich.

"The workers are overpaid, to do the job they do, as well as you may say that the executives are" - May I please say that the exec's are not only overpaid but verge on criminal by gambling eveyone's job security on a bigger bonus check for themselves without concequnce do to the contract they sign guaranteeing them golden parachutes no matter how poor their performance. Low level works have to take responsibility for poor performance, why shouldn't those at the top be held to the same standards.

I am quite ok if the CEO's lose their jobs, but not ok with blue collar workers losing theirs! Michigan is already in dire straights. I would much rather help out our brothers and sisters there than help out Exon with tax write offs.
There are no more efficient companies to take their place unless you want to outsource the jobs or learn to speak Chinese!

I don't favour an auto bailout any more than a bank bailout - so forgive my confusion but aren't banks "companies" too?

Taking Shepp's analogy a little further, what if the local loan shark came looking for a government bailout.

Don't support one bailout if you don't support the other.

As for the union bashing - was it the UAW who inisisted on building inefficient cars that no-one wants to buy? Did they spend all their R+D efforts trying to put a DVD in the head-rest of an Excalade instead of looking creating more efficient engines? Did they establigh GM's product plans?

Let's keep in mind that GM was once (a year ago) the biggest company in the world, and now they are on the verge of bankruptcy because of... the union? Riiigght.

i totally second this second half about all the union bashing. GM would probably be doing much better right now had they been ahead of the curve on efficiency.

as for the bailout. im torn. should we hand auto companies $25 billion after they screwed up so badly? Probably not.

should we attempt to save the jobs of the millions of Americans who will be out of work should these companies collapse?
I'm gonna say yeah.

It sucks, but until someone comes up with something better, I don't think there's any choice. BTW, isn't this $25 billion coming out of the $700 total? This proposal is being tossed around like this is new money that has to come from somewhere. I didn't think that was the case.

Shepard Smith is probably the best and good thing I can detect on Fox ...

It's up to Fox: find a way to keep him (ergo, improve the station), or lose him.

Either way, kudos to the man.

Bravo, Sheppard. I don't care if he was most likely a liberal - that was an unjustified attack.

As for the bailout, the way this is being handled reinforces my suspicions about the true intent going to war with Iraq, maybe even Afghanistan. Take advantage of a situation when the public is struck with fear and put a blueprint plan any rational America wouldn't agree with into production, leeching the financial prosperity in our treasury and privatize the funds to a bunch of corporate morons who wouldn't give a dollar to a vending machine. Why won't Paulson aid the automotive industry? Because they are a side effect. It's not in his interest to give this blank check to anyone but the banks, some which didn't even ask for a handout. This administration will keep trying to be the worst in history until Obama takes over, and this "bailout" is the cherry on top.

It's good to see the true members of Congress have a chance to take a stand. Ron Paul, Marcy Kaptur, and Barbara Miikulski are my favorites so far.

I want to personally thank Shepard Smith for sharing his view with such vigor and passion! This is absolutely rediculous! These (3) major auto companies have been struggling for years. They need to overhaul the UAW and re-negotiate their pension/healthcare costs/cut management/and whatever else has allowed these industries into the ground.
The only reason the Democratic Congress is shouting about bailing out UAW is because they supported the Democratic party substantially with finances and votes! Its time to pay the PIPER!! I personally don't feel obligated to pay out my pocket for the industries that aren't going to change anything and eventually claim banruptcy in the end!! I believe its time for us to hold these legislator's accountable and to a higher standard. They have done a formidable and negligent job at bailing AIG! The proof is in the pudding!! Congress is partly responsible for our economic crisis and I believe they should be working on some sort of resolution on how to pay back the millions all of us have lost from our retirement/college funds!! Its time for them to come forward and stop hiding behind the smoke screen of bailouts!!! They aren't viewed as hero's but part of the problem!!!

It is plain to see, oh so plain to see, that Shep Smith is ashamed to be working for Fox News.
Shep is a decent honest man and working for Fox must sicken him.
Move on Shep, and stop using your anger to blame others.
The problem lies within, pack in your Fox job and you will be able to look at yourself in the mirror every morning.
If Shep Smith does not leave Fox, I fear for his sanity!

"The only reason...."

Here are OTHER reasons:

It's the economy stupid! The auto industries were struggling to catch up, and could have done it a lot faster, but the speculators in the oil industry drove up prices at an unprecedented rate. I would grant that Detroit could have done better, but the change caught the world off guard.

There are an estimated 3 million people who could become jobless if we do not find a way to get the auto industry on life support. Read articles about the import cars crowding the yards at the ports. Detroit is NOT alone. All automakers around the world are suffering and seeking bailouts from their respective countries.

We should all, if we can, as soon as we can, buy American. We should also bail out the industry, but not without curtailing the executives excesses. We have too many [millions of] people who will suffer if we don't. It makes a lot more sense then the loans to Wall Street.
