SOFIA, Bulgaria — Archaeologists have unearthed an elaborately decorated 1,800-year-old chariot sheathed in bronze at an ancient Thracian tomb in southeastern Bulgaria, the head of the excavation said Friday. "The lavishly ornamented four-wheel chariot dates back to the end of the second century A.D.," Veselin Ignatov told The Associated Press in a telephone interview from the site, near the southeastern village of Karanovo.

But he said archaeologists were struggling to keep up with looters, who often ransack ancient sites before the experts can get to them.

The bronze-plated wooden chariot is decorated with scenes from Thracian mythology, including figures of a jumping panther and the carving of a mythological animal with the body of a panther and the tail of a dolphin, Ignatov said.

He said the chariot, with wheels measuring 1.2 meters (four feet) across, was found during excavations in a funerary mound that archaeologists believe was the grave of a wealthy Thracian aristocrat, as he was buried along with his belongings.

The team also unearthed well-preserved wooden and leather objects, some of which the archaeologists believe were horse harnesses. The remains of horses were uncovered nearby.

In August, excavations at another ancient Thracian tomb in the same region revealed another four-wheel chariot. Daniela Agre, a senior archaeologist at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, had said at the time that it was the first time a completely preserved chariot had been found in Bulgaria. She said previous excavations had only unearthed single parts of chariots _ often because ancient sites had been looted.

Some 10,000 Thracian mounds _ part of them covering monumental stone tombs _ are scattered across the country.

Ignatov said up to 90 percent of the tombs in the region have been completely or partially destroyed by treasure hunters who smuggle the most precious objects abroad.

He said the country's Culture Ministry granted euro10,000 ($12,500) for the excavation.

"The money is badly needed because we are in an uneven race with looters who are often better equipped than our teams," he said.

First mentioned in Homer's "Iliad" as allies of Troy, the Thracians were an Indo-European nomadic people who settled in the central Balkans around 5,000 years ago. They were conquered by Rome in the 1st century, and were assimilated by invading Slav peoples in the 6th century. They had no written language, and so left no records.

Fierce warriors and horse-breeders, the Thracians were also skilled goldsmiths. They established a powerful kingdom in the 5th century B.C. Its capital was thought to be Seutopolis, whose ancient ruins lie under a large artificial lake near Shipka, in an area dubbed "the Bulgarian Valley of Kings" for its many rich tombs.

Some people get buried in their cars, others insist on being buried with their piano, all of that is the same as this guy being buried in his chariot.......only he did it much sooner.

The "chariot" is actually a Buick Skylark - proof that GM cars have not changed for almost 2000 years.

No internal combustion engine. It's a better technology than the one GM-cars use now.

This is really cool. As someone whose favorite book series started off with a Thracian prince as the hero, I find my interest is greatly increased in an amazing discovery that is most definitely a lucky find, especially in the current era.

No. Night Pleasures by Sherrilyn Kenyon. First "official" book in the Dark-Hunter series. Prequel is Fantasy Lover, also a very good book.

This chariot must be worth a fortune, because a bronze toilet paper holder from Kohler costs $243.50! So please don't tell me the wealthy can't afford to pay more taxes.

Don't you know that it's not that they can't -- it's always been whether or not they should pay taxes.

Because, after all, the economy would grind to a halt if we asked them to pay their fair share of providing for the common defense, maintain the infrastructure, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.

The economy ALWAYS takes precedence above all else.

Bulgaria's a great place, with lots of history and very friendly people. I spent my last summer vacation there, exploring the Rhodope mountains and taking Bulgarian lessons at the Mastylo language school in Plovdiv. A wonderful, enriching experience!

did dinosaurs pull it or had they all died off 2200 years before?

The Scythians were to the east of Rome and part of their empire was in Bulgaria. Rome sent out the Tenth Legion to subdue the Scythians and were never heard from again, they became the lost X legion. The Scythians were quite bloody and even the Amazons warriors fought with them. Alexander never went against them.
It would be something if this chariot was from the Tenth Legion.

Your covering over a thousand years of history in those couple of sentences. It's never that simple.

You are flat wrong about Alexander. Alexander spent three years fighting the Sogdians and the Scythians to establish an uncontested border between their land and his, somewhere toward the middle of their land, of course. One of his noteworthy political marriages helped end the fighting. He also had to march through Scythiia on his way to India, conquering, founding cities, marrying princesses, etc., you know, the same-old same-old if one were Alexander.

Google "Alexander Scythians" to get the scoop.

As for the chariot, it was almost certainly ornamental and could have been made by anyone. Chariots were obsolete war tech in that part of the world by the second century CE. And, international trade at the time was such that it could be an import made by the Big 3 Luxury Chariotmakers in Egypt.

The article talks of it as a Thracian chariot because it was found in a Thracian tomb. Who knows, once the site's properly excavated they might figure out if it was local or imported, a classic or a modern raodster.

The article is wrong - some Thracians were literate and wrote inscriptions in their native tongue.

As it happens wikipedia has has an excellent and well annotated article on the Thracians. It does not support your assertion. It is my understanding that some Thracians did eventually adapt the early greek alphabet for writing somewhere around 500 BC. But, I can't recall where I read that.

I thought that I might hear various kinds of things about Bulgaria, but a chariot (or whatever it is)? Now that's a surprise!

Someone needs to correct these guys. Chariots all have 2-wheels, and those spinner hubcaps that cut the other guys wheels apart like in Ben-Hur.

These guys found a stagecoach, or at best a buggy. Maybe just a lunch cart.

Their PR guy probably advised them "calling it a Chariot will get you more news coverage"

Please read the 1st paragragh. Chariot is the root word for car, The "ch" used to be pronounced "kh". Like a car, a chariot's "chariotness" is not determined by the number of wheels it has.
