Saturday's edition of the Vatican's official newspaper absolves John Lennon of his notorious remark, saying that "after so many years it sounds merely like the boasting of an English working-class lad struggling to cope with unexpected success".

In a lengthy editorial marking the 40th anniversary of the Beatles' famous White Album, L'Osservatore Romano heaps lavish praise on the British band.

Why don't they do something worthwhile and admit their policy on birth control causes suffering and poverty all over the world.

If The Pope and the Vatican are serious about "forgiveness," they ought to take some of the billions of dollars tithed to them by their believers and pay reparations to the thouisands of indigenous cultures they destroyed thorugh Missionary work, their tacit approval of the Holocaust, their support of Hitler and other dictators throught the ages, their oppression of woman and gays, their centuries long recod of sadism, torture and murder of their real and perceived enemies, their suppression of scientific truths, the Inquisition, etc, etc.

How many people have been slaughterd in the name of the Beatles? I can only think of one: poor John Lennon himself. How many millions and millions of people have been slaughtered, tortured, oppressed and brainwashed by the Catholic Church?

The Vatican needs to apologize for sanctioning the slave trade, working with the Nazis... How can any person forgive any body of their perceived sins. You can't that is God's job. If you believe in such things. That is why on the cross Jesus did not say I forgive you, he said forgive them father. They want to keep playing this forgiveness game to try to hold on to control of people. The Church is more about money and control than it is about anything else. Shame on them!

They were and for me still are. His comment was metaphorical (implicit comparison: the use to describe somebody or something of a word or phrase that is not meant literally but by means of a vivid comparison expresses something about him, her, or it, e.g. saying that somebody is a snake), but even back then the religious community had their heads up...in the sand.

How big of them to forgive John Lennon after all this time. It didn't take them near as long to forgive (and shield) their pedophile priests. I'm sure John does not need your kind of forgiveness.

Who thinks John Lennon really cares right now?

Now we can start working on getting God to forgive the Vatican.

For pretty much everything.

Wow 40 years. I always like stories like this. It lets me know how far behind the Vatican is. So were at a 40 year delay right now. Cool. Much better than the 500 year delay we had on the Spanish Inquisition.

It's true that what Lennon said was completely taken out of context. His statement wasn't condemning Christ, or Christianity. What he said in fact was true: The Beatles were more popular among young people than Jesus Christ. There's no reason to "forgive" Lennon for anything, as what he said was simply the truth. The Vatican needs to get over itself.

The Catholic Church far overestimates its influence on thinking minds. We have seen the light and you have chosen again and again to represent elements of Darkness - greed, rape and intolerance to name a few.

George Harrison: P2 Vatican Blues (Last Saturday Night) lyrics

Gazed at the ceiling from below
A splendid Michelangelo
Filled my heart with delight
Last Saturday night
Arrived believing from home
Climbed every step inside St. Peter's Dome
Claustrophobic and ex-Catholic
Last Saturday night
Now how come nobody really noticed
Puff of white smoke knocked me out
The truth is hiding, lurking, banking
Things they do at night
It's quite suspicious to say the least
Even mentioned it to my local priest
One Our Father, three Hail Marys
Each Saturday night
[Let's hear it. Call him on ??.
Play a chord, Dhani.]
I wish somebody would tell me
That it's only a show
I'll confess, own up, let's face it
In my concrete tuxedo
It's quite suspicious to say the least
While mentioning it to my priest
One Our Father, three Hail Marys
Each Saturday night
[Hello Father, Father, stick a little right upon with us. It'll be alright.]
One Our Father, three Hail Marys
Each Saturday night
One Our Father, three Hail Marys
Each Saturday night

Yes. And and insofar as he ever cared anything about what the Catholic Church had to say about him, John is still going to be pleased to hear.....Oh, wait....too late.....
