A massive ball of fire that lit up the skies over two Western Canadian provinces on Thursday evening was likely among the biggest meteor events to be witnessed in Canada this year, one expert said.

The fireball, which streaked through the darkening skies over Alberta and Saskatchewan at about 5:30 p.m. Calgary time, likely weighed between one and 10 tons and shone brightly enough to be seen over an area 700 km (435 miles) wide.

"It was somewhere between the size of a chair to the size of a desk," said Alan Hildebrand, a planetary scientist at the University of Calgary and a coordinator of a fireball reporting service.

I was hoping it was the Mother Ship coming to take me off this dying planet. I'll keep waiting.

"The energy of the flickering and flaring, as well as of the low-frequency radiation, comes more from the ionospheric plasma than from the meteoroid. The meteors that we've come to think of as 'burning up in the atmosphere' may instead be the targets of mini-thunderbolts from the ionosphere."

Here's something weird. All my cats (about 6 or 7 indoor/outdoor) were acting scared sh*tless for a couple days leading up to this event. I tried to figure out what was going on with them but now I think they were responding to this natural event. Maybe is is true and maybe it's not. They're all acting fine now.

Excellent point. I saw the footage that was captured off someone's dash cam. It was covered on Good Morning America. Must have been quite a sight.

All the people who saw this thing were very lucky. This is a once in a hundred lifetimes event.

I saw it. I was driving across country, on my way back from Thanksgiving... I was, however, VERY far away and it didn't look so spectacular - just another shooting star among the well more than a dozen that I'd seen on this trip. But the timing and direction match one in particular...
