Sanford Disses Palin

Via NewsHounds comes this clip from last night's Hannity & Colmes, in which South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford seems to scoff at the notion of Sarah Palin as a party standard bearer. After offering up Bobby Jindal, Mitch Daniels, and Rick Perry as Republican Party up-and-comers, Alan Colmes asks, "Who else would you put in that category...Sarah Palin, for example." Sanford takes a moment to chuckle at the idea of Palin as a party leader, then offhandedly offers, "Uhhh...certainly, she's among the mix." Sanford basically concludes by saying, "Yeah, seriously. Here's a bunch of other names that aren't Sarah Palin." He'll probably wake up in bed next to a pile of shredded-up turkey viscera on Thanksgiving morning.

I thought all Republicans worship Palin as their intellectual standard bearer.

As much as I'd like to take joy in this, I really don't think he was laughing at the suggestion of Palin being a party leader. He laughs too early, adn don't forget the statelite delay.

I will pray everyday though that they nominate Palin in 2012. If Obama has any kind of success in his first term and has no big embarrassments, I can't even fathom the landslide of an Obama/Palin race. Don't forget, anything Obama does is being graded against the Bush years. Not too high of a standard, eh?

You could pretty much chalk up a reelection victory if Palin is going to be the face of the GOP. If the GOP wants to actually compete in 2012 they would work on elevating Jindal to be the face of the ticket. That's pretty much the only way I see them giving Obama a legitimate run for his money in 2012.

I think Jindal would be wise to center up his positions on some social issues. I don't think that stuff's playing anymore.

I do not think she is laughable. She represents the rabid John Birch right which has brought the country to the edge of catastrophe. The dead coming back from Iraq in boxes sent their by her type of Pol are not funny. The misery being created by our economic catastrophe is not funny. It is not even funny that air heads who choose ther candidates like they choose their Hollywood stars is not funny. There is nothing about the risk of Sara Palin as a major player that is funny at all.

I think you are absolutely on target. Underestimating this segment of society will be our demise.

This woman is the female version of George Bush- we need to be vigilant about preventing someone like her ever achieving national office.

Oh, please...stop with the "Sarah Palin was demonized." B.S. She got a huge walk on many things. She did not get tougher questions than the other 3 on the tickets. The most sexist treatment she got was from her own campaign, but on the other hand, they recognized that she was not nationally and internationally "aware." She said Hillary Clinton was a whiner for saying the media was sexist, but she and the campaign were blasting away at the media for their treatment of her.

Please stop the SP obsession already. I give her her due for being the governor of her state, although she did win running against one of the most unpopular incumbents in the state's history. And that's as far as I'll go. She whipped up hate and fear. She tried to embellish her record from the "git go." And she lamented the "elites" even as she coveted and reveled in the superficial goodies of "elites." She was a "maverick" drooling to join the national "in club," not unlike a high school drama.

Could we PLEASE move on to more substantive discourse, for it will not be found in discussions of Sarah Palin.

I saw the interview and to say he "laughed" is a distortion....to me it came across more like if you don't mention her name you will be asked why you didn't...so it was more of ..oh..yeah..of course Palin is in the mix....among many...
The more things people do to fabricate or generate hostility towards Palin, the more some are drawn to her...bad tactic.

Although I am not Palin's fan, I am a fan of the truth. I agree with you 100%. I cannot support any distortion of the truth even if it is being distorted against my greatest enemy (note: not Sarah Palin) to my benefit. I saw the laugh, as you correctly observed, as: "because I did not mention Sarah Palin's name does not mean she is not in the mix" or "I knew you were going to ask me about Sarah Palin, and I was right," or "can we have a candid converstion without you throwing out Sarah Palin's name."
Saying that he was laughing at the idea of Sarah Palin being a future flag bearer of the Republica party is dishonest. Moreover, he would have been stupid to be laughing at Sarah Palin's prospects when you consider McCain's numbers and how her entrance into the campaign galvanized the Republican base. Although her popularity eroded, she and McCain still pulled in over 55 million votes. Laugh at or ignore her potentials at your peril and that includes Democrats!

A very sensible man who understands that people are entitled to their opinions, no matter how ridiculous their opinions may be. In addition, he understands that there's no need to fret over those not-so-well-conceived opinions. Some of those ideas are just for brainstorming purposes, and although we should allow them to flow freely, it's not very hard to realize that they must be discarded outright for failing to hold water.

My prediction has always been that Palin will ultimately be failure in the national political scene.

Whats even FUNNIER than sarah palin as "the new face of the party" is BOBBY JINDAL. thats at least as pathetic as Palin. The ONLY reason to think of him as a "star" is because hes not white. The republicans REALLY believe Obama won the nomination so the dems could run a black man. that is how mindf***ed they are. Jindall is just another supply side, tax cutting, earmark boosting, republican glad hander. But since he has the kind of "suntan" berlusconi would find attractive hes in contetion. and whats even more pathetic than that, is there will be a huge divisive battle if the republicans try to nominate him FOR THE SAME REASON! LOL oh mercy, i never thought it could be this good again.

Didn't Obama do quite a bit of "earmark boosting"?

What with all the racial stuff??? I was hoping this country could get over that...the race card in any instance used by anyone whichever way is a cop out...I doubt the party picked Obama because he was black...there are some who voted for him because he was black..but many voted for him because they wanted something drastically different from Bush...
Jindal has a great recored in Louisiana...race is not a factor.

Amen sister! He is so slick he's nauseating! I am from Tx (now living in Cali), and several years ago he was caught on tape trying to talk the Tx Highway Patrol out of a speeding ticket by repeating, "Can't we work something out?" "Don't you know who I am?". Nice.

I miss Ann Richards!! She would have some choice words for Ms. Palin - you betcha!

I love Sara Palin. I want to see more of her. What a great story.

The reason she is a media sensation is because it is bizzare that Miss South Carolina would ever be nominated for VP. What a great story.

We are supposed to "think" as citizens and not just emote about candidates. Being a beauty queen does not qualify one for office.......

I do not think it serves liberals, progressives, Dems, left-wing thinkers etc well to demonize anyone for their religious/spiritual convictions. Religion is deeply personal. When one demonizes another on this level, do you really think that person says, Oh yeah, you're right, I'm a nut-job. No, they tune you out.

Let's focus on the relevant issues.

Sarah Palin is inappropriate for any higher office because she is not qualified. Her lack of coherent verbal articulation is not hiding a wealth of ideas or innovation. She is ignorant on many levels with no hunger to move past the gist of an issue. Her lovely exterior masks a low, cunning, and devious nature. She is a fraud whose actions do not reflect a conservative shepherd of taxpayer "contributions." She is masterfully opportunistic and her naked ambition will propel her-- not a desire to serve her country. On these points, she is fair game. There are plenty of reasons to say thanks, but no thanks to Sarah Palin.

However, to attack her on religious issues (abortion, creationism, homosexuality etc) crosses the line into pettiness. Moreover, religious people, who may likely agree on the relevant issues about her, will flock to her defense if their shared values are attacked.

The common goal is to make this country a great place for everyone. Have patience and respect.

If one doesn't want their religion 'demonized', don't put it out there for all to see.

Jesus said in Matthew to keep your relationship with God private.

Religion has no business in government. Period.

I do not demonize Sarah Palin for her religious beliefs.

I dislike her desire, whether religiously based or not, to demonize others for theirs.

Religion IS deeply personal. Which is why SHE should leave it out of politics and policy discussion and think twice about "pallin' around" with people who thinks Jews in Israel deserve the attacks they get because they have not accepted Jesus as their savior.

If she cannot separate her religious beliefs from making policy (i.e., marginalizing homosexuals as not entitled to full rights under law), then it is not petty to take her to task for her beliefs as they relate to making policy.

I'm sorry, perhaps you have not been paying attention: Palin's popularity stems from putting her religious beliefs on the political table. Why do you thing that you have this entire segment of the GOP unconcerned with her lack of critical thinking skills?

Yes, I would agree that religion is a highly personal for most people- it is not for Palin. For Palin it is the source of her political clout.
