CHICAGO - President-elect Barack Obama and his wife took their daughters to work at a food bank on the day before Thanksgiving, saying they wanted to show the girls the meaning of the holiday, especially when so many people are struggling.

Ten-year-old Malia and 7-year-old Sasha joined their parents to shake hands and give holiday wishes to hundreds of people who had been lined up for hours at the food bank on Chicago's south side.

Sasha wore a pink stocking hat over her pigtails and Malia had on a purple striped hat as the family handed out wrapped chickens to the needy in the chilly outdoor courtyard. Those seeking food on Wednesday at St. Columbanus also received boxes with potatoes, oranges, fresh bread, peanut butter, canned goods, oatmeal, spaghetti and coffee.

The president-elect, dressed casually in a leather jacket, black scarf and khaki pants, was in a jovial mood, calling out "happy thanksgiving" and telling everyone "you can call me Barack."

He told reporters that he wants the girls "to learn the importance of how fortunate they are, and to make sure they're giving back."

The soon-to-be first lady said the Obamas wanted to give their children "an understanding of what giving and Thanksgiving is all about."

The Obama family's activities in the courtyard quickly drew the attention of schoolchildren whose windows overlooked the courtyard. They put up a sign against the glass that read: "We love our prez" and screamed when the president-elect waved to them.

Obama then turned to his wife and suggested they go visit the kids. Secret Service agents, looking surprised, disappeared inside the building to accommodate his request.

Minutes later, hundreds of children were brought down to the school auditorium, and Obama loped onstage as they screamed and cheered.

"I just wanted to come by and wish everybody a happy Thanksgiving," he said. He then asked the children what they would be eating for Thanksgiving dinner.

Turkey? Stuffing? Green beans? Sweet potato pie?

Perhaps it was a hint at the planned menu for the Obamas, who are planning to host a holiday gathering at their Hyde Park home.

The president-elect then took questions from the children, one of whom wanted to know what it was like to be followed around all the time. It is a topic that seems to touch a nerve in Obama, who has lamented the lack of privacy that comes with his new job.

"I gotta admit, sometimes it's kinda strange ... you just want to go take a walk or go out and ride your bike or something, and you always have someone with you," Obama said. "So you don't have a lot of privacy and that's one of the things you have to sacrifice in order to run for president."

This eligibility question won't go away. There are so many prominent people involved, it would appear there is something to it. What if it's a problem? The implications are enormous.

Just like the Father said in the interview, Obama is here putting hunger on the map.

Aside from his position on gay marriage, he is just about Perfection. I just adore him and I don't want to stop.

I have been on this earth 57 years, and I have always been proud to be a BLACK WOMAN, but now I am proud to be a BLACK WOMAN, living in america. Some people here in american couldn't see a blessing if JESUS came down and handed it to them. We are blessed to have a man who is both black and white. You would not see any other president with the honesty of our incomming president. They have always said, if you dig deep enough you will find something wrong with anyone. I have black and white grandchildren, and I am glad my president is mixed. Some of you are still uneducated and foolish. There is no need to slander me for my comments, you have been slandering us for years. Every race has good and bad in it. I was glad to see the pride in those children face. Now they know, they CAN, YES THEY CAN. And anyone who do not like my comments know where they can put theirs. Now we are truely one nation.

Preach on, Sister. No one can disagree with that.

I grew up in Chicago,I know how much this meant to these people to see the President and know he's aware of of their plight. If they looked a little standoffish it's only their pride.Nobody wants to be in that situation.I have a good feeling about President Obama.

A people's President. So proud to be an American now.

It is so great to finally have a president who is really about the people. Everytime there has been a problem we always hear how "the President, in Crawford" or "the President in Camp David" has been made aware of the situation. So refreshing to see a President who is instilling values of togetherness, kindness, and giving to his children.

yeah because the Bush daughters turned out so bad... LOL. And I'd take Crawford, Texas over political thugland Chicago any day.

I'm starting to wonder who are the elitists now.

This is what happens when you put a COMMUNITY ORGANIZER in the White House. Love it!

What a great down-to-earth family. How refreshing. I'd like to see what overpriced outfit Cindy McCain would have worn had she even had the NERVE to hand out food to poor people.

And, on another note: look how TALL Malia is! She's all the way up to her dad's shoulder. What a good-looking family.

Love 'em!

reading some of the comments.. and I can say is WOW, you people need to get a grip. when people joke about Obama being a Messiah, it's not a joke, these miscreants actually believe it. It's sickening.

Perhaps it's all relative. Compared to the strutting, smirking, clueless frat boy and his incompetent cronies looking out only for the wealthy and well-connected the past eight years, Obama and his family look pretty damned refreshing.

and to be inspired is a bad thing?

Look at the smiles on the kids of our futures

you spitefull person.

He may just be a man, but one thing he does is give HOPE to the kids in a classroom

What was so cute and funny were the little children who were holding on to him and would not let him go! He was practically dragging them because they would not let go! That was so cute!

I've tried to be cynical about this, but somehow I really can't get myself to it: did anyone notice the difference in body language between the Obama's and regular politicians in this kind of setting? I know, this is the perfect photo-op used by many politicians, but with this family, it just doesn't look like one, it looks like they're just doing the kind of thing they have been doing all the time; the way the president-elect connects with these kids? I don't think I've ever seen anything like it.

C'mon trolls (I know you're out there), tell me how this is just another photo-op, and how the first-family-elect are exploiting their kids, please?
09:15 AM on 11/30/2008
I agree with you. It looks natural because it is natural for a community organizer to be comfortable in this situation. Remember when the Midwest flooding was happening and he was out there piling up sandbags?

thus far i very much like the change our new president has brought...a change in thinking that views the world and solutions to challenges from the bottom - up, rather than top - down thinking that never quite seems to flow downward...
