International Sex Survey: Britons Among The Most Promiscuous In The World

British men and women are among the most promiscuous in the world, researchers have found.

In an international index measuring one-night stands, total numbers of partners and attitudes to casual sex, Britain comes out ahead of America, Australia, France, the Netherlands, Italy and Germany.

The result has been linked to the decline of religious scruples, the growth of equal rights for women and a highly sexualised popular culture.

Well, HuffPo posts yet ANOTHER Daily Mail story, and anyway I'm always deeply suspicious of surveys like this.

But reading this comments page has been a howl. The surprise registered by so many American posters at sexual mores in the UK suggests that a significant proportion of the US population gets most of its knowledge about the UK from old Merchant Ivory re-runs on TV. You really should get out more, guys! Nothing about this information would surprise anyone who actually knows the UK not just of now, but of the last 20, 30 or maybe more years. British people are often struck by how prudish Americans appear to be. As for why the US is more buttoned-up, who knows? I would guess that the role of religion in American society (it has so little in the UK as to be statistically insignificant) has something to do with it, but it would take more than a Daily Mail article to figure that out.

As for the hostility to the idea that the British don't live like characters from a Victorian novel: well, I repeat my earlier statement, that you should get out more! Thanks for the laugh, this has been one of the most amusing threads since Sarah Palin and the turkeys...

You know, I was stationed in England, on the outskirts of London (Bushy Park) during the early 60's. What I can say about back then is that English girls were a lot more friendly, by far, than American girls. I mean, I could tell you some stories. Anyway, I will say that Americans were sexually conservative, even then. I don't mean to judge, but for a young American G.I., it was really great being stationed in England. Twist it anyway you want, but I had a good time. Isn't that what life is all about?

I am not shocked by that article headline at all. After reading many articles about how promiscuous and rowdy these brits are when they go on weekend trips to Europe. It's a wonder that the UK doesn't have a higher STD rate.

The UK does have higher STD rates: ranks top (with France) in STD league tables in western Europe;, had more HIV diagnoses than anywhere else in Europe but Portugal in 2006; had 63% more STDs than 10 years ago (and more than doubled in 45 and overs).

The UK STD rate is actually pretty high. The out of wedlock birth for teens in that country is also rising pretty rapidly (it's higher than ours). Don't think it's mentioned in this article but Brits also have some of the highest rates of drunken sex in the world also.

I assume the limiting factor is either (a) the promiscuity of straight women, or (b) the number of gay-ish men. I.e., the assumption is that given sufficient access to mates, men everywhere would be equally as promiscuous as possible.
