Georgia Senate Runoff: Martin Aims To Bring Democrats One Step Closer To A Super-Majority

Today's runoff race for one of Georgia's US Senate seats is crucial for Democrats in their attempt to get a 60-vote, filibuster-proof majority.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution drills down the significance of today's vote:

Palin and U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) lost the Nov. 4 election to Obama and running mate Joe Biden. The McCain-Palin ticket, however, carried Georgia by about 200,000 votes, and Chambliss brought Palin to the state in a last-minute effort to push conservative voters to the polls for today's runoff.

Democrats want to oust Chambliss and elect Martin to help secure a 60-vote, filibuster-proof "super majority" in the Senate.

Democrats now have 58 seats in the upper chamber, with only races in Georgia and Minnesota to be resolved.

Republicans have vowed to hold Chambliss' seat at all costs.

So while the tr0//s go on and on about Chabliss winning because Obama wasn't there, the President-elect was busy putting together his cabinet.

And while the tr0//s go on and on about how the President-elect's cabinet doesn't represent change, they cheer the status quo of a lo ser like Chambliss being returned to the Senate.

The filibuster again! Why does that rascal have such control over us? Invariably we honor it without ever questioning the basic premise. Why do we continue that idiotic thing, anyhow?

The senate is already incredibly undemocratic. Cows in Wyoming have more power in the senate than humans in the more populace states. Add the filibuster and the entire idea of representative democracy is out the window. And yet we lamely accept. Why? Because it is there.

I said when the filibuster was challenged the last time, (the "nuclear option" remember?) that the Dems should let it go. We"d get some conservative judges, to be sure, but the next time the Dems gained power they would be so glad they did. But they fought to keep that holy piece of crap and here we are.

What would the founders think of it? They"d be aghast that such an obnoxious tradition (and tradition is all it is) could so impede the working of the will of the people. Whatever it takes, we should shoot the damn thing in the heart!
