S.I. Newhouse Jr. would like to clarify one thing about the rumors swirling in the fashion world today that Anna Wintour is about to be replaced by French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld: "There's no truth to it," the Conde Nast chairman said through a spokeswoman late Tuesday.
Blogs like New York magazine's The Cut and Gawker had been abuzz all day with speculation that Mr. Newhouse was in Europe hammering out details of Ms. Roitfeld's move to New York to take over as editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine. Vogue has taken a greater hit in this economic downturn, compared with fashion magazine competitors like Elle, Harper's Bazaar and Marie Claire.
Mr. Newhouse, however, pooh-poohed any speculation that Ms. Wintour would soon be replaced. "This is the silliest rumor I ever heard," he said.
