"Courting Condi" Screening Canceled: Director Blames Her "Cronies"

The Stanford Daily reports that a screening of "Courting Condi," a movie about Condoleezza Rice, has been abruptly canceled:

Stanford Film Society (SFS) canceled its Dec. 2 screening of "Courting Condi," a "musical docu-comi-tragedy" about U.S. Secretary of State and Hoover Fellow Condoleezza Rice. Although the filmmakers speculated that Rice's supporters forced SFS to cancel the screening, SFS officers said they will not screen the film due to its poor quality.

"Courting Condi" follows Devin Ratray, a musician in love with Rice who travels across the U.S. to learn about her past and win her heart. Ratray and his obsession with Rice are fictional, but according to the filmmakers, the facts about Rice's past are real.

Sebastian Doggart, the film's director, said his purpose was to "portray a woman who has not been sufficiently investigated and portrayed in the media . . . in an entertaining way." Doggart hoped the screening would "stimulate debate" about whether the Secretary of State should be allowed to return to Stanford as a faculty member.

Doggart believes that a conservative force within the University or even the federal government shut down the screening.

"I think someone strong-armed [SFS]," he said. "I suspect someone made a call to them and said, '[screening this film] is not in your best interest.'"

Elsewhere, Doggart blamed "Rice's cronies" for "scaring the Stanford Film Society into pulling the screening." The film society president responded in a letter:

I canceled the screening of "Courting Condi" partly because the film itself is poorly made and boring, and partly because of an incident in which the filmmaker sent offensive emails to several Stanford professors and administrators. But, 12 hours after canceling the screening, I was fielding calls and emails from major newspapers and from the leaders of student groups on campus, all of whom believed a lie that Mr. Doggart had pulled from thin air: that the Stanford Film Society was excited to show the film until "pro-Rice cronies" scared us into backing out.

I thought Mr. Doggart's ludicrous claims of censorship were quite amusing...until I realized that people actually believed him. I was shocked. In my time at Stanford, I've seen countless protests and demonstrations targeting President Bush, the Hoover Institution and University administration. I've never heard a single complaint about Stanford trying to shut anyone down. I think the University has shown, a thousand times over, an extreme sensitivity to free speech and a firm commitment to open dialogue, no matter the topic.

I would guess that members of the Hoover Institution could care less what we Stanford students think about Condoleezza Rice. But even if someone from Hoover was silently seething over a student screening of an anti-Rice documentary, I'd bet he or she is smart enough to know not to try to shut it down and give students an opportunity to cry victim.

I had the pleasure of viewing this film and was impressed, as it was very informative and entertaining. As the director notes, this piece was intended to shed light on a woman many in the general public do not have extensive knowledge about ... it surely was effective in this, as it displayed live interviews between those who know and have known Condoleeza Rice throughout her life. Although I did find the film entertaining, this is should vary from viewer to viewer, as it does with any piece of art. The question of the film's quality being poor is ridiculous; its acceptance to many worldwide independent film festivals, and its positive reviews therein proves otherwise. I was most impressed by the live footage and the knowledge presented through live interviews. The use of music in conveying this message seemed very effective as well.

I am a producer on this film, and I just wanted to say that all we want is the chance for people to make up their own minds. Film is art, and art imitates life.

I do, however, also think it's interesting to note that it was Kerry Mahuron of the Stanford Film Society who first invited us to screen the film. In an email of October 28, she wrote:
"I have seen the movie and am interested in showing it. However, as you are probably aware, Condoleezza Rice is a current faculty member of the Political Science Department at Stanford, and starting next February will be returning to the University as our Vice Provost. Showing a film that paints her in such a negative light is not only controversial, but also potentially inflammatory and a violation of Stanford policies. But, I agree with Mr. Doggart that to prevent us from showing the film would violate our right to free speech, so I don't anticipate them being able to stop us."

The irony is that it looks like, "they" did finally get to her.

another irony is that the SFS action has undoubtedly raised the film's profile and given it a global exposure which would probably never have occurred if they had just kept their mouth's shut and let the film be shown

after reading this article i can tell you that i would love to see the film --- congrats, courting condi, on the film's windfall of the kind of free publicity that no amount of money could buy

Yes, I saw your other post. I think there needs to be more films like this. And people should stand up for their voices to be heard. No doubt these people have been under a lot of stress and scrutiny... but that doesn't mean we shouldn't learn from past mistakes.

Based on the trailer for Courting Condi, it appears to be a very entertaining film, while still digging into her past and giving a rounded view of who this woman is. Stanford's loss. Hopefully student organizations will do what they do best and bring it back. I'm keeping my eye out for this one. There's more on YouTube, too.

Since when has "quality" been an issue with regard to independent films. Have they not screened "Plan 9 from Outer Space"?

As the director of the film, let me make it clear that our beef is not with the Stanford Film Society. I'm not going to respond to Ms Mahuron's attacks. As an undergraduate, she has every right to be frightened of angering Dr Rice, her future Vice Provost who, as our film shows, has a particular propensity for waterboarding. The reason we are fighting to reinstate this screening and debate is to shine light on this woman, and use our admittedly unusual portrait of her to ask questions: Should Stanford University welcome Rice back when she leaves power in January 2009? Is it appropriate that Rice should become a fellow of this fine university when, as our film shows, she has lied at least 56 times to Congress? Does Stanford still back her policies in the 1990s when she pushed back affirmative action programs so egregiously that the University was formally investigated by the Federal Government? Should Stanford provide a cushy job to a woman who covered up the massacre of 17 Iraqi civilians by her Blackwater staff to protect a a $1bn with civilian contractos? Does Stanford defend her record of personally authorizing torture techniques used on illegal detainees?

A college refuses to show independent films, whether good, bad or indifferent?

Since when...???

Was this going to be a horror film? you know where a Cruella Deville type goes shoe shopping on 5th Ave while hundreds of thousands go without water ,food and shelter in New Orleans .

I'm sorry, but Condi strikes me as having all the passion of an android. To have a movie about her love life you might as well cast a blender and a toaster in the lead roles.

I think she would melt if you poured water on her.

Or she might change her position on waterboarding?

Rice is the worst Secretary of State in history. Thankfully her photo-op tenure at State is coming to an end. Too bad she'll go back to Stanford. The poor Iraqis that died due to her criminal cohorts weren't so lucky.

Whatever, let the lady have a quiet romance. Dr Rice could do with some fun & privacy. She has a lousy job & works for the USA's # 1 louse. Give her some slack. She needs it.
