Check out an amazing video of a dog saving another dog that had been hit by a car on the highway. The heroic canine runs into traffic and drags the severely injured dog out of harm's way. Rather unbelievable.

The Associated Press has posted this release now about the dog: http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/L/LT_CHILE_HERO_DOG?SITE=VASTR&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

Looks like this story may never have an ending.

I have been so touched by the actions of this dog. I think it can be a symbol of how ALL animals, even the two-legged kind should help each other in what could be the hard times ahead.

I think you could use this video to see if a person is an optimist or a pessimist.

The optimistic view would be that the dog is saving his buddy and the pessimist of course thinks the dog was straving to death and waiting to get his next meal.

I would like to proudly say I am an optimist.

I have read most of these comments and it is sad that most people don't believe in the goodness of things that can happen. They immediately jump to a conclusion that the dog has the "what is in it for me" attitude that some of the people in this world have. Yes, animals and people REALLY do things out of the goodness of their hearts sometimes for no reward to themselves.

I am not saying there is not cruel things that happen in this world but when something truly amazing and good occurs why can't people take it for face value instead of assuming the worst? Maybe if all of us would open up our eyes and hearts and realize there might be a little good in all of us maybe this world would be a better place.

I know how this is going to make a lot of you very angry, but I have to say it.
Those animals are clearly starving. That may not have been an act of mercy as much as a desperate act for food.
Sorry, it just looks that simple.

All the Chilean newspaper accounts say differently. Each article (and there were numerous) talks about how amazing the dog's actions are in trying to save his amigo. Since the incident happened in Chile and since the Chilean people see the actions of the strays first hand, that would lead me to believe THEY are right in their perception of the dog's motivation - that motivation being to save his friend. I'm wondering why some of you are having trouble accepting this. Have you ever googled dog news stories? Dogs (as well as other non-human language animals) perform acts of heroism every day.

Optimism and pessimism aside, I think the perception is based on life experience. If you live with domestic animals, people want to assume that wild or feral animals will act like the tamed ones. No one can be faulted for trying not to see the ugly side of nature. If you replace the dog with a coyote, do you get the same warm fuzzy feeling? They both are capable of companionship and loyalty. But both are born with a survival instinct and hunger will allow them to take great risks.

Hello, Im a Chilean citizen from Santiago and I want to explain what happen here. One of the principal problems is that the City of Santiago has grow up in lasts years so quickly that the development of Highways and industries have put things to animals more danger it was. Animals should not enter Highways but it's clear that there's an open way for dogs or other animals, just the other day some horses enter a highways and although they did'n cause any crash, it was clear it could'd been fatal. What we need is to take care that development of cities shoud also be togheter with new laws that control businesses projects security for animals.
There's a lot of things to do but chileans have learn with these and other images that taking care of environment and animals is critical. The other day, police discover that an agency that must protect animals that are found in streets was really a fraud and they were just killing animals and doing business with goverment and business money. The incredible thing is that those people are being judge of fraud and and there are no laws to judge them correctly for killing animals, theres some related laws that has been in studies for 3 years! but things like that just tell us this is an urgent topic. Anyway I agree with all your opinions, if one would want to have more information I can let you know, Goodbye from Stgo Chile.

Santiago Citizen, do you know whether the injured dog survived and what became of both dogs?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:39 PM on 12/09/2008

Yes, I would like more information. Is there a chance that the dog is still alive? I know it was taken to the facility that is now being investigated for slaughtering hundreds of animals - the Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna Animal Protection Society. Do you know if the dog was killed or if, by some miracle, it is still alive? It was picked up almost at the exact time that the investigation started, so I am hoping it was saved. Thanks very much.

BTW, as I am sure you know, senators in Chile are working to put thru new laws to keep this from happening again.

Hi SantiagoCitizen! I am with another pet power group and we have been trying to find out if there is anything we can do to help in Chile! We are heartbroken that Jorge Rivas, operations manager for Vespucio Norte Highway said they were unable to find the hero dog that tried to rescue the dog that was hit. We know it happened in March, and saw that the Animal protection service was busted for fraud of killing animals. We are so worried "our hero" dog may have been one of them. Mr. Rivas said there is no way to find that dog. Have you heard anything else? Are people in Santiago still looking for the dog? Can we help? Please, if you have any more information, we are all eager to know! I will relay to my group, please let me know what you know, what would help our efforts. Thank you for being so caring about it, the entire world was deeply moved by what we witnessed.
Hello from Alexandria Virginia.

Over 10 million animals, like that heroic dog, are put to death every year in the US alone because they are abandoned and unwanted. It breaks my heart to see their faces on tv .

But I do what millions of other Americans do everyday – I go to The Animal Rescue Site at http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/clickToGive/home.faces?siteId=3

and simply click on a button to help rescue them and many other animals. It’s FREE and takes just a seconds. Then the advertisers, who sponsor that site, match each click with money which is sent to organizations and charities that provide food, care, and shelter at renowned animal sanctuaries (including Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch in Texas and the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in California), pet shelters supported by the Petfinder Foundation , North Shore Animal League , and other worthy animal care facilities supported by the GreaterGood.org foundation.

There are also other buttons to save wild life habitats and the Rain Forests, fund child healthcare and hunger programs around the globe, and for literacy programs for children, for breast cancer research, and much more.

Toward the bottom of the webpage, you can see the number of people who clicked on those buttons during that week, anywhere from hundreds of thousands to millions. I love being one of them.

Check it out, I bet you will too

Forward it to others. I'm sure they would appreciate it.

Thank you

A amazeing video ,and one that us Humans could learn a thing or two from .Once when I was in a large city downtown,I saw a homeless man have siezures in front of a bar, people just kept walking around the man, some stepped over him.The man died ,I later heard.I was 13 years old and even now 45 years later ,I remember that day,I remember how UNCAREING the people were..maybe if a dog would have wandered up on that homeless man ,the man may have lived ...just maybe ,I learned then as I have learned since,IS the most deadly animal is the human animal,it will kill for no reason ...

Thanks very much. Gives me one more clue. I am also trying to contact Santiago highway officials.

Just checked out the original source of the video to which you referred. On the homepage of the website, there is a story about the city trying to exterminate the large number strays. The picture of all the bodies of dead dogs brought me to tears. Our hero dog may be dead now.

OK, for all of you who are wondering about the outcome, here is what I've found out so far: DenverChannel.com had the Spanish translated. According to their report, the video was a surveillance video of a busy highway in Santiago, Chile. The narrator is talking about how amazing the dog's actions are. Then the narrator goes on to talk about all the feral dogs in the area.
If anyone finds out anything else (such as the name of the TV station), I would love to know. I am trying to see if there something I can do for that amazing dog. Probably an impossible task, but I will keep on trying. To me, this video is a symbol of what all animals (even the two-legged kind) can do for each other; esp. in these times where life ain't gonna be as easy as it used to be. We've got to help each other.

Bless you, MMock. I pray the hero dog is alive and will be adopted. Please keep us posted if you find out anything, or if there is anything we can do to help.

Just last week a bunch of humans trampled over a dying person in order to get a good price on a flat screen TV.
Apparently dogs have more humanity than we do. Sad.

Yes, I thought about that too when I heard this story! Sad indeed...amazing to watch these animals care for each other since apparently, we humans have forgotten how (there's the holiday spirit for you.)
