Several big environmental groups have issued statements praising Barack Obama's nomination of Bill Richardson today to serve as secretary of commerce. The pick, they said, will help spur green business.

National Wildlife Federation President and CEO Larry Schweiger:

If there's anyone who understands that a green shovel can help dig us out of our economic crisis, it's Bill Richardson. He knows that clean energy and climate action can create jobs and repower America's economy while protecting our natural resources.

I like this new Commerce Secretary nominee. He has already started some of this work in his home state and during his run for party nomination he was very strong on renewable energy and the greening of this country. Good Luck to this entire new administration (they will need some luck with all the flack they are going to run into from the other side).

You owe Mr Lee an apology a-wipe. It's about time you gave it to him. or are you just another bush-type unable to admit wrongdoing?

Great news for the Nation! At a press conference this morning with NM's Gov. and Lt. Gov., after the obligatory talk of smooth transition, Richardson said he would be Governor till mid February after Senate Confirmation, and will deliver his State of the State address Jan. 20; I asked Richardson about the long and somewhat boring procession of Commerce Secretaries (Herbert Hoover, Henry Wallace, Averill Harriman, Maurice Stans, Elliott Richardson (the only person appointed to 4 Cabinet posts; Richardson is at 3 now), Malcolm Baldridge, Reagan's Rodeo Rider/Commerce Secretary who died at a California Rodeo0 I posited that he would be the most international of them all. He thanked me for the compliment; for the rest of the story about what he could accomplish, please read this (which I also submitted to Huffington Post):

NEW IDEAS ON RESTORING U. S. ECONOMY, for the Next Secretary of Commerce, William Blaine Richardson III

We will harvest good ideas for Richardson as Commerce Secretary, knowing that USA 's Economy needs new ideas. I encourage Economists and Internationalists, students, armchair pundits, and even Monday morning Political Quarterbacks to join in this dialogue; Huffington Post could do something similar. Ideas are the heart of political and governmental change, not voyeuristic passive commentaries....

Quite a distinguished list of Commerce Secretaries.

I think Richardson will elevate the post--and prove a GREAT choice who really makes a difference.

should he stray, he may need to be reminded

Everyone on the left is happy to a certain extent. Richardson's environmental stance was the main reason I originally supported him in the primaries. I believe that the Obama team co-opted a lot of his ideas and I am glad they did, so , yes we're happy, thanks for noticing.

I am actually on your side. This remark is directing to those who are clamoring loudly that he won't follow through with his promises
