When your party gets shellacked at the polls, you look for any sign of hope.

So Mike Duncan, chairman of the Republican National Committee, is trying to make the most of Saxby Chambliss winning re-election to his Senate seat in Georgia in a Tuesday runoff.

The triumph stopped Democrats from reaching a potentially filibuster-proof majority of 60 seats in the next Senate -- and Duncan argues shows that "any rhetoric about a liberal mandate is nothing but hot air."

It took Republicans TWO TRIES to get an Incumbent GOP Senator in Georgia re-elected, and they brag about it. No wonder they think Sarah Palin is a genius. She is compared to most of them.

Let's review--

Obama needed 270 electoral votes to win; he got 365.

Obama beat McCain in the popular vote by 6 percent. (It would have been more, but Ralph Nader siphoned off some votes.)

Obama got a majority of the states, 29 to 21.

For Saxby Chambliss, the incumbent, to beat Jim Martin, he had to go into a runoff.

Here's how I read it: The Repubs lost the presidency, they lost seats in the House, they lost seats in the Senate, and they had to bust their humps to keep a "safe" Senate seat.
