Barack Obama will publicize the names and agenda items of the groups that are meeting with its transition team, the campaign announced on Friday. Moreover, the public will be allowed to review and discuss the information on Obama's website, Change.gov.

The move, announced by transition head John Podesta, is another tip of the hat towards a more transparent governing process. The campaign's Director of Public Liaison and Intergovernmental Affairs, Michael Strautmanis, will do the posting, which will note not just the organizations that are meeting with the president-elect and his staff, but also the documents (policy "wish lists") they bring with them.

"Every day, we meet with organizations who present ideas for the Transition and the Administration, both orally and in writing," reads a memo from Podesta to the Obama staff. "We want to ensure that we give the American people a 'seat at the table' and that we receive the benefit of their feedback."

Strautmanis discusses the move in the video below:

It is a bold move on Obama's part. Down the road, when his proposals are turned into actual policy, it will be easy to see which groups won out and which ones lost in the process. That transparency could lead to accusations of favoritism and quid-pro-quos as well as hurt feelings among certain industries that felt they were stepped over or ignored.

For good-government folks, meanwhile, this is potentially a very big deal. Obama is opening up his governing process to the public, which, for politicians, is hardly convenient. He is encouraging, in a way, a public competition between organizations to see who can produce the sharpest policy takes. And inevitably, he will be challenged to defend his work based on its merits, as observers will get an even keener sense of what kind of policy choices he had at hand.

These non-government groups, think tanks, unions and associations will likely welcome the new process, as it will provide them with greater public exposure than they enjoy simply by submitting a white paper to team Obama. And reporters -- searching for some copy in this transition period -- will welcome the move, as it provides policy-related material on which they can base stories.

The list will be made public moving forward on Obama's change.gov website.

It's really interesting to see how Obama naysayers are reacting to things like this. He's doing what he promised to do in terms of transparency... So some of the crystal-ball-readers who said he was lying have disappeared, and some are finding hysterically creative pays of twisting that transparency into a fault.

I haven't yet seen any with the stones or integrity to admit they were wrong.

Yup. A rare breed.

Wonder whether they gonna stick with the proposal/promise to have meetings with lobbyists broadcast live on c-span or youtube. Reality TV of a very different kind.

unless they change their minds -

this new policy will help lobbiest fine tune their efforts though. It will also make it much easier for the wealthy and corporations, foriegn governments etc. to pick the correct lobbying firms. In the old days you had to pay off a number of lawyers to get your requirements in front of the right politicians - now you can go to a website and just pick the successful ones.

Brilliant ! maybe HP can be a sponsor? Lots of clicks !!!

I'd be more concerned about who the lobbyist are giving money to and who is accepting it in large quantities. But everyone has to admit we will be getting to see parts of government that we have never seen and it will also force those that come to Washington for favors, tax cuts and hand outs to make them public - it will control their greed I'm sure.

This sounds like a very good framework for transparency.
I hope, however that it does not become overwhelmed with heavy-handed comments that are from the lunatic fringe of society, which is the reason "Initiative and Referendum" never seems to gain realistic gounds in governance.
Being "Open To Suggestions And Comments From The Public" needs have a fairness filter placed on it.

Let's face it. After 8 years of secrecy and deception - this sounds scary. Openess? Tansparency? "We the people" having input? WTF? I can hear the blahblahblah Hannity and Limbaugh's now - they'll call it a threat to democracy, they'll call it socialism, they'll call it anything but what it is just to deride the new administration. Get ready folks. It's going to be a bumpy 4 years.

Should be a very interesting list. Hope his friends from the neighborhood "drop in". Also, maybe a Wednesday evening from the local pastor for a few words. Wonder who will sleep in the Lincoln bedroom?

Wonder who all those energy folks were that met with Cheney eight years ago? It's still a secret.Even after your people ruined the economy, our national reputation and all the ongoing criminal activity, you still want to point a finger.

The secret energy meeting has always bothered me, too. Seems to have set the tone for the ongoing 8 years. Keeping secrets and lying. What a legacy.

Your bitterness in your loss is making you sound really petty and stupid. Perhaps you should do something about it.

This is fantastic, kudos to Obama and his Team. AIPAC sure won't like it. Their time of dictating Middle East Foreign policy is over. Hope they get the boot but good.

So insightful it made you post a reply, demonstrating for all your inability to comprehend even the mildest sarcasm and irony.

People that spend all their time trying to convince the world just how oh so smart they are, don't get out much and have no contact with people who actually are smart.

Try getting out more. You might learn something.

So sad.

Major holes in your "argument:"
Bush and Cheney actually LIED about the war, Plame, torture, Blackwater, etc.
Bush and Cheney actively fight(and faught) congress and investigations into their meetings, dealings, etc.
Bush is President and is a criminal.
Cheney is Vice President and is a criminal.

Obama, on the other hand, is creating a government that has nothing to hide and is creating a true Democracy.

So your joke falls flat on its face....

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:42 AM on 12/06/2008

give it a rest - if Bush is a criminal then so is every democrat in congress that voted to support the war.

you swamp water people need to beat another drum - if you honestly believe that the public will be privy to everything Obama is involved with then you should not vote until you are a little more mature.

All signs point to Obama making a positive change in the direction of our country, but if you think that will always include the President sending you a memo on his meetings, you are an i d i o t - - -

Actually, he will release documents related to the meetings...

From change.gov:

"John D. Podesta announced that all policy documents from official meetings with outside organizations will be publicly available for review and discussion on Change.gov."

Hopefully his policies will be in the best interest of the country as a whole and not what is good for a few. If everyone walks away from the table wanting then his decisions will be fair and just.
