IS there life left in the dead parrot sketch?

It has been 25 years since Monty Python was a living comedy troupe -- the film "The Meaning of Life," released in 1983, was its swan song -- but that has not stopped one alumnus from trying to convince the world that Python, like the parrot in its ancient skit, is just resting. For decades, Eric Idle has made sure the Monty Python name continues to grace books, DVDs, concert tours, a Broadway show, ring tones and video games.

Now he is helping take Monty Python to the Internet.

The brilliance of Monty Python is that the humor is universal. Anyone can understand it....even Australians.:)

Why is HuffPo using a picture of John Cleese to illustrate an article about Eric Idle?

The usual ignorance, I suppose.

Open question: What other British comedy comes close to MP? (Notice I said "close"...or even make that reasonably close)

I'd vote for The Goodies which had a shorter run at about the same time as MP, IIRC.

Mr. Bean earns a thumbs up from me also.

And for non-crazy but nicely dry British comedy Keeping Up Appearances is well worth watching.

JMO...

Mr. Bean is good. Simon Pegg's films are fun. But there's still nothing quite like the Pythons. Has anyone else seen Cleese's address at Chapman's funeral?

Not sure. Maybe 'The Young Ones' or 'Absolutely Fabulous'.

I love 'Keeping Up Appearances', as well as 'Fawlty Towers'.

Umm, Black Adder, Tony Hancock, The Vicar of Dibley are excellent examples of Brit humor for those who love Python.

The knight with the rubber chicken could we 24/7 and still not smack every deserving Republican from GWB on down the line.

GWB...that reminds me: "ALBATROSS!"

Monty Python set the standard. Like a previous poster said, what's been coming out in recent years has been loud and dumbed-down to say the least. Adam Sandler is the first to come to my mind to be erroneously passed off as "funny" (perhaps it's because I was born well before 1970).
Nevertheless, much of Python's material is still way ahead of it's time. The "Every Sperm is Sacred" bit from the Meaning of Life addresses the pressing problem of over-population with the graces of the Catholic Church. An even more taboo subject to confront in this religiously-sensitive day and age.

Long Live Python! "Ni!"

The Pythons spoiled me forever. The current loud, dumbed-down humor of frat boys Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn and SNL writers pales in comparison.

Talk about bringing out your dead....My 9 year old loves the Python sketches. She laughs at Cleese's walk and the German soldiers who fell out of the trenches laughing themselves to death and I laugh at the absurdity of a special government dept for silly walks. I am blown away with how the Pythons "comedy ninja" your brain by making you see the brilliant duality of a joke so funny, the audience will never be able to hear it because its so potent it was used as a weapon in WW2. This stuff is timeless and for all ages.

People who don't get Python probably voted for Palin.

Those of us who do would have if that Palin were Michael.

This is a little known fact, but Sarah Palin won the women's division of the International Twit Competition for every year until she retired as undefeated champion.

I haven't seen Spamalot, but there's certainly more to these people than a Broadway musical starring Clay Gaiken.

TommyJohn, you should watch some of the clips. They were source material or inspiration for almost everything funny that happened after them.

Thing is, PythonOnline has been up for a while. How is this news?

I keep hoping the Pythons will one day get back the rights to their PC games - "Monty Python's Complete Waste of Time". "Monty Python & The Quest For The Holy Grail" and "Monty Python's The Meaning of Life" - from the now-defunct 7th Level.

And yes, I would love to see them ported to Mac OS X.

Couldn't you find a photo of Eric Idle? That is John Cleese on the HuffPost page.

You beat me to it.
What did they use a picture of John Cleese?

I think thats from their classic sketch 'Ministry Of Silly Walks'.
