CHICAGO — Workers who got three days' notice that their factory was shutting its doors have occupied the building and say they won't go home without assurances they'll get severance and vacation pay.

About 250 union workers occupied the Republic Windows and Doors plant in shifts Saturday while union leaders outside criticized a Wall Street bailout they say is leaving laborers behind.

Leah Fried, an organizer with the United Electrical Workers, said the Chicago-based vinyl window manufacturer failed to give 60 days' notice required by law before shutting down.

During the two-day peaceful takeover, workers have been shoveling snow and cleaning the building, Fried said.

"We're doing something we haven't done since the 1930s, so we're trying to make it work," she said, referring to a tactic most famously used in 1936-37 by General Motors factory workers in Flint, Mich., to help unionize the U.S. auto industry.

Fried said the company can't pay its 300 employees because its creditor, Charlotte, N.C.-based Bank of America, won't let them. Crain's Chicago Business reported that Republic Windows' monthly sales had fallen to $2.9 million from $4 million during the past month. In a memo to the union, obtained by the business journal, Republic CEO Rich Gillman said the company had "no choice but to shut our doors."

Bank of America received $25 billion from the government's financial bailout package. The company said in a statement Saturday that it isn't responsible for Republic's financial obligations to its employees.

"Across cultures, religions, union and nonunion, we all say this bailout was a shame," said Richard Berg, president of Teamsters Local 743. "If this bailout should go to anything, it should go to the workers of this country."

Outside the plant, protesters wore stickers and carried signs that said, "You got bailed out, we got sold out."

The Chicago-based Rainbow PUSH Coalition, a civil rights group, announced in a news release Saturday that Jesse Jackson planned to visit the workers Sunday morning to offer his support.

Larry Spivack, regional director for American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Council 31, said the peaceful action will add to Chicago's rich history in the labor movement, which includes the 1886 Haymarket affair, when Chicago laborers and anarchists gathering in a square on the city's west side drew national attention after an unidentified person threw a bomb at police.

"The history of workers is built on issues like this here today," Spivack said.

Representatives of Republic Windows did not immediately respond Saturday to calls and e-mails seeking comment.

Police spokeswoman Laura Kubiak said authorities were aware of the situation and officers were patrolling the area.

Workers were angered when company officials didn't show up for a meeting Friday that had been arranged by U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, a Chicago Democrat, Fried said. Union officials said another meeting with the company is scheduled for Monday afternoon.

"We're going to stay here until we win justice," said Blanca Funes, 55, of Chicago, after occupying the building for several hours. Speaking in Spanish, Funes said she fears losing her home without the wages she feels she's owed. A 13-year employee of Republic, she estimated her family can make do for three months without her paycheck. Most of the factory's workers are Hispanic.

Obama has chosen, mostly, Wall Street promoters and corporate lawyers to be in his cabinet.
He hasn't included anyone who knows how to go out interact with the everyday American citizens around the, and then report back to him what the people’s needs, and assess whether his administration’s new Initiatives are working. During the Great Depression, Eleanor Roosevelt
fulfilled this role. I nominate John Edwards for this role. John Edwards would be a refreshing change. Is not change what Obama s supposed to be about? He has spoken up for over and over for average Americans, i.e. Main Street, not Wall Street.
During his “Road to One America Poverty Tour” John Edwards demonstrated that he is uniquely qualified for this role:
He also walked and comforted people whose homes were being foreclosed:

He has visited workers employed in the new renewal energy economy:

John Edwards is, also, the only candidate for President that actually went down to New Orleans on several occasions and worked along side those striving to try to bring back the areas that remain so devastated from the effects of Hurricane Katrina.

I posted this in another story about this, but it's worth repeating:

It came out Sunday that the scum that owns Republic Window & Door in Chicago recently incorporated a new company, Echo Windows, in Red Oak, Iowa, telling workers there that they are going to double their workforce and bring in equipment from "another facility that is being shut down". Looks like these jerks are shafting the Chicago staff, planning to move the Republic equipment to Iowa. They refuse to answer questions, and refuse to meet with the workers.

This article should be relocated to the Breaking News Page.

Behind the scenes, Obama & his new economics crew should be applying pressure to the banks, that left Congress/Washington with truck loads of money, to release the funds into the hands of the workers at this factory.

Message to Wall Street............if you don't let them have the money, these people have rightly earned, they won't have the funds to buy any of the garbage, whoops, I mean goods, that have been force fed to the American people in the last 3 decades. Evidently, unless the middle class is buying this junk, the whole world comes to a financial screeching halt.

Note to Middle Class....you may have more power than you suspect. Stop buying STUFF! Purchase only essentials like your great grandparents did during the depression, and save, save, save.

My grandpa was in the sit down strike in Flint in 1936 -- I hope he's watching over you all. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Union Strong!

Durbin should be there, we are just incensed that these working class jobs are being cut by the banks who are taking the bailout money out of working class pockets....

And Barack said that government was not good at running things.... Medicare is a really well run organization and makes the health insurers look like the MAFIA... Barack needs to sit down and watch SICKO with Michael Moore by his side... The FREE MARKET IS MAFIA... there will always be insiders who will take advantage of situations ie succumb to temptation...

"WTF is happening?"

The Bush Legacy.

And missing from this post: Bush's War of Choice and his victims, civilian and military.

"monthly sales had fallen to $2.9 million from $4 million during the past month."
Why do I get the feeling somebody's walking away with a golden parachute? The company didn't declare bankrupcy so why can't they manage this better. BofA is not responsible for the management of the companies they lend to.

No, BoA is not, but they are withholding credit which has the effect of sticking the workers with the tab. Did Executives receive their pay for the same periods and for severance?

It time to make a run on Bank of America. This is precisely why this bail out money was out there; to prevent this from happening. But the bank got their money to cover their stupidity credit loans (over sized mortgages and secondary mortgages), and are forcing business to close their doors that have a line of legitimate business credit.

This is beyond outrageous. Be strong UEW!

So Bank of America got $25 billion in corporate welfare from the government, but they aren't "responsible" for the welfare of workers at this glass plant?!?! I'm sorry, but this is totally unconscionable. I urge everyone who reads this post about these slimebags to write their US Reps and Senators about this outrage. If Bank of America can't find its way to help our brothers and sisters in Chicago, then maybe the government should take back this $25 billion and make it available as bridge credit to small businesses throughout the country who are laying off people because these sorry sacks of you-know-what are too chicken to help out after being given all this money. These people need to be in the dock facing trial followed by some hard time in a Federal prison.

"If Bank of America can't find its way to help our brothers and sisters in Chicago, then maybe the government should take back this $25 billion"

The "BAILOUT" should have never been signed into law. Democrats and Obama are directly responsible for what is happening now. Don't blame Bush. Ok, he is a disaster, but they all knew that going into writing the bailout. They could have and should have written far better legislation and many told them that. They chose to ignore it. Obama is responsible too!

The least he could do is show up to the site and make his presence known since it's just on the other side of town for him.

I hope these workers get what they want.

Viva La Raza!
