NY Post:

After trimming jobs throughout the year, Madison Avenue is bracing for even bigger layoffs in 2009.

Ad executives and recruiters expect agencies, which have been cutting in dribs and drabs, to hand out a flurry of pink slips early next year as the ad downturn worsens.

The talk in industry circles is that the major agency holding companies - Interpublic, Omnicom and WPP - are planning deeper cuts to ring in the New Year.

Clearly none of you know anything about this industry and the people who work very hard in this media. I am one single Mom, who is having a hard time making a living and is really terrified of what this means not only for myself but several hard working, middle class people also affected. I like others in this industry hire alot of freelance people: crews, photographers, studios etc. that depend on a healthy economy. We are neither fake nor vile we are just like everyone else trying to feed our families. Your ignorance is the only vile factor here.

It's going to be uncomfortable to watch the economy be brought back into balance
but, very necessary.

Some of the best ads I've seen in years have been on YouTube and Current (cabletv). They're viewer-made and really bright. That's where business ought to look for innovation.

Looks like the people at the top of the services economy hierarchy are going through the hardships that people in manufacturing have been going through for more than a decade. Serves them right.

I work for one of these companies and I'm not rich or corporate! I'm support staff in the accounting industry and I'm scared $hitless!!!! My company is really good about taking care of the little guy, and our CEO's don't have huge homes or drive Hummers or that kind of thing. But we will be affected, and it's just a dominoe effect. When companies go under, they don't need advertising. We work in print advertising, so if we lose business, so do the printers, the paper companies, and anyone else we pay to do work for us!
