WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama intends to round out his environmental and natural resources team with a Nobel Prize-winning physicist and three former Environmental Protection Agency officials from the Clinton administration.

The president-elect has selected Steven Chu for energy secretary, Lisa Jackson for EPA administrator, Carol Browner as his energy "czar," and Nancy Sutley to lead the White House Council on Environmental Quality, Democratic officials with knowledge of the decisions said Wednesday.

Obama plans to name the four to the posts in the coming weeks, barring unforeseen developments.

Still unclear is whom Obama will tap for interior secretary.

Officials close to the transition said support for John Berry, the director of the National Zoo and a former assistant secretary at the Interior Department, was growing. But these officials also said Arizona Rep. Raul Grijalva and California Rep. Mike Thompson were still in the running.

The Democratic officials who disclosed the selections spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to reveal names that have not been made public.

Among these posts, Browner's stands out because it's a new White House position.

She is expected to coordinate the various agencies that play a role in energy and environmental policy, especially on issues such as climate change that don't fit nicely in the silos of the federal government. Those agencies could include the EPA and the Transportation, Energy and Interior departments.

Six weeks before his Jan. 20 inauguration and little more than a month since his election, Obama has chosen much of his Cabinet and top White House staff. He has only a few key posts left to fill: national intelligence director, the secretaries of housing, labor, education, transportation and agriculture and the U.S. trade representative.

Obama scheduled a news conference on Thursday in Chicago to name former Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle as his secretary of health and human services. That choice has been known for some time.

On Wednesday, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who has been mentioned as a possible labor secretary, was in Washington meeting with Obama's transition team. Her spokeswoman, Liz Boyd, would say only that the governor discussed the president-elect's economic stimulus plan.

As for his environment and natural resources team:

_ Chu was one of three scientists who shared the Nobel Prize for physics in 1997 for work in cooling and trapping atoms with laser light. He's a professor of physics and molecular and cell biology at the University of California, Berkeley, and has been the director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory since 2004, where he has pushed for research into alternative energy as a way to combat global warming. It is the oldest of the Energy Department's national laboratories, doing only unclassified work, and in recent years under Chu has been at the center of research into biofuels and solar technologies.

_ Jackson, who would be the first black person to lead the EPA, is a former New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection commissioner who worked at the federal agency for 16 years, including under Browner when she was Bill Clinton's EPA chief. Jackson is a co-chairman of Obama's EPA transition team, and currently serves as chief of staff to New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine. A New Orleans native, she grew up in the Lower Ninth Ward, the area stricken by Hurricane Katrina. She holds chemical engineering degrees from Tulane University and Princeton University.

_ Browner, who served as EPA chief for eight years under Clinton, will become Obama's go-to person in the White House overseeing energy issues, an area expected to include the environment and climate matters. Now chair of the National Audubon Society and on the boards of several other environmental groups, Browner has been leading the Obama transition's working group on energy and environment.

_ Sutley, the deputy mayor for energy and environment in Los Angeles and the mayor's representative on the Board of Directors for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, is the first prominent gay to earn a senior role in Obama's new administration. She was an EPA official during the Clinton administration, including being a special assistant to the EPA administrator in Washington. She also previously served on the California State Water Resources Control Board and was an energy adviser to former Gov. Gray Davis.

Oh, noes!

Not a genuine (gasp!) scientist, to head an agency primarily concerned with -- science!

What will we do, without an ideological Profitist heading every government agency? How will we hold up our Corporatist heads, if that happens?

It's the End of That World, as we Knew it, and I feel fine!

I am getting increasingly tired of these nice as pie Christian posters stating "We don't hate gays, we're not intolerant, you just need to understand that to us, it's a sin, and that's just the way it is."

We GET that. We GET that it's a sin...for you. But why do you think it's your place to tell people who don't follow your religion that according to the rules of a faith they don't hold, they are sinners?

How would you like it if EVERY SINGLE TIME the subject of eating pork came up, you were inundated with comments by Jewish people trying to guilt trip you, saying "Just so you know, we think that's a sin. You're sinning. We don't hate you or anything, but you should know that we think. And what we think is that you're a sinner." What if they tried to illegalize pork eating?

Would this make you reconsider your position? Would this make you stop and think "Huh, I never thought of it that way. In a religion I am no way associated with, my lifestyle is a sin. Well, that makes me not want to eat pork!"

Tell me, how much do you care about what the rules in the Tipitaka (Thesavada Buddhism doctrine) are? What was that answer? Zero? Well, that's how much all us non Christians care about what YOUR doctrines say.

All you are accomplishing is making every non Christian American feel increasingly threatened and harassed.

Makes perfect sense. Gays can "straighten out" any problem and still be the best dressed and give the most fabulous parties in Washington officialdom. We're not in Kansas anymore.

Again, there's a difference between "relevance" and "significance." Obama's race may be irrelevant, but it is still significant.

Race, in most cases, is acknowledged without need for comment; sexual orientation requires profession.

She is out, and that's all we need to know, but we "should" know it, nonetheless, because it makes a difference to gays and lesbians, to the Latino community that believes homosexuality doesn't exist within its culture, and to those who believe homophobia is justified because gays and lesbians represent such a small, "invisible" minority.

I must say that I strongly believe right now, this society (US) is undergoing rehabilitation from "discrimination". It is probably like the US is under hypnosis and it (like media) begins saying aloud (first gay or black) what has been engraved in the subconcious mind for ages and then, the investigator (we the people) prescribes a list of solutions (such as on these threads). Thus, with open discussions about discrmination, I think we are on the way to a non-discriminatory future.

I'm an Obama skeptic. I am encouraged. But please, stop overselling the few progressive appointments announced so far.

All the first-tier appointments -- the ones that will occupy most of the President's time, if history is any judge -- went to conservatives. State: Clinton. Defense: Gates. Treasury: Geithner. This Cabinet is more conservative than the one selected by Bill Clinton.

It's nice to dream that the head of Obama's environmental council might put her head together with Secretary of Interior Raul Grijalva, Secretary of Energy Stephen Chu, and perhaps Secretary of Commerce Bill Richardson to push a progressive initiative over the juggernaut that comprises the Cabinet's first string. I'd like to think that a well-reasoned argument about the long-term consequences of a decision will carry the day for the progressives. I'll believe it when I see it.

Meanwhile, people of the stature of Dennis Kucinich, Russ Feingold, Barbara Boxer, Howard Dean and, yes, Ralph Nader are being bypassed.

I think we need to celebrate the milestones. The first black president is big deal because people are still alive who had to use seperate drinking fountains. Same with female milestones.

and based on election day Gay people have lots of miles to go for equality. So this is a big deal. Sorry if other minorities and the homophobes on here don't get that.

I agree. After a while these "milestones" get old and irrelevant. It is time to move on.

I truly believe Obama could care less about someone's sexual orientation but their qualifications. Who has time to worry about something so trivial?

OK So now we have to announce someone's sexuality when they are appointed for a cabinet position. That's what's wrong with this country. Its nobody's business what anyone else does behind closed doors.

It has been like this for centuries but I hope this time and moment is the "turning point".
We must not forget that only in the US are such discussions (e.g. on race, sexual orientation, gender, politics, religion, etc) even publicly tolerated...and so, we shld all work together to set the pace or example for the future and universe!

Some gay person probably researched it and wanted the world to know so badly. It didn't come from the horse's mouth. Who cares?

I was just going to comment on the same thing. Hopefully in the next few years we can stop labeling people the first black this and the first gay that. I hope their families know that they are gay or black. If not, they're out of the closet now.

Why should a Sexual behavior be part of the reason to appoint someone to a position in Government?

That is total insanity.

Gayness is a sexual behavior. not a job skill
it is a guy who likes to have sex with a guy or a woman who wants to have sex with another woman.

Should we then say, the First Adulteress Senator? The first Masturbating official?

Where will it end?

Should "a Sexual behavior" be part of the reason NOT to appoint someone to a position in Government? What if an openly gay person is eminently qualified, as Ms. Sutley appears to be?

That, Seah, is not the point. Sexuality was not the reason in any way why this person was chosen for her job. She is qualified in every way. For minorities of any qualification, the first of anything is a source of pride and an affirmation that this person who is so much like you are, who has been discriminated against throughout history, is now allowed to be open about herself and inspire others like her. It proves that the world, which seemed so limited, is now for the first time inclusive.
