The Blagojevich/Wire Connection, Revealed

The Blagojevich/Connection, Revealed

Looking over the breadth and scope of the unfolding Rod Blagojevich investigation, I couldn't help thinking that that Patrick Fitzgerald has hooked himself the sort of fish that The Wire's own Lester Freamon worked so hard to land himself. I wouldn't be surprised if PFitz had his own closet full of hand-whittled dollhouse furniture -- the man needs some outlet for the Anger That Dwells Inside Him, after all. Well, I hadn't noticed until ex-Defamer editor Mark Lisanti highlighted it, but ol' Blago is revealed in the transcript to be channeling The Wire's Clay Davis:

During the call, ROD BLAGOJEVICH stated, "unless I get something real good for [Candidate 1], shiiiiiiiiiit, I'll just send myself, you know what I'm saying." ROD BLAGOJEVICH later stated, "I'm going to keep this Senate option for me a real possibility, you know, and therefore I can drive a hard bargain. You hear what I'm saying. And if I don't get what I want and I'm not satisfied with it, then I'll just take the Senate seat myself."

Emphasis on the similar use of a preferred Clay Davis turn of phrase, ably spoofed in the video below:

If the Blagojevich investigation continues to hew to the themes of The Wire, expect FBI agent Robert Grant to end up teaching remedial math to inner city kids, and our own Tom Edsall to complain that watching all the cops turn into social workers just isn't that realistic.
