NEW YORK — Who says network television can't create new hits?

CBS' "The Mentalist" topped the prime-time ratings last week for the first time.

The series with Simon Baker solving crimes using astute powers of observation was seen by 18.74 million people last week, its biggest audience ever, according to Nielsen Media Research.

It was the first time since May 2005 that a freshman series has led Nielsen's weekly prime-time ratings, when "Desperate Housewives" did it for ABC.

The departure of ABC's "Dancing With the Stars," which competed with "The Mentalist," helped drive new viewers to the CBS show. Three CBS dramas were the most-watched programs last week.

Barbara Walters reached Nielsen's top 10 with her annual special focusing on the year's most fascinating people, with President-elect Barack Obama taking the top spot. It was the best showing for this annual special since 2004.

For the week, CBS led with an average of 10.9 million prime-time viewers (6.9 rating, 11 share). ABC had 8.6 million (5.4, 9), Fox 7.7 million (4.7, 7), NBC 7.5 million (4.8, 8), My Network TV 2 million (1.2, 2), the CW 1.7 million (1.1, 2) and ION Television 790,000 (0.5, 1).

Among the Spanish-language networks, Univision led with a prime-time average of 4 million viewers (2.0 rating, 3 share). Telemundo had 1.2 million viewers (0.6, 1), TeleFutura 510,000 (0.3, 0) and Azteca 280,000 (0.2, 0).

NBC's "Nightly News" won the evening news ratings race with an average of 9.4 million viewers last week (6.3 rating, 12 share). ABC's "World News" was second with 8.8 million (5.9, 11) and the "CBS Evening News" had 6.8 million viewers (4.6, 8).

A ratings point represents 1,145,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 114.5 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

For the week of Dec 1-7, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: "The Mentalist," CBS, 18.74 million; "NCIS," CBS, 18.52 million; "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," CBS, 17.48 million; "The OT," Fox, 16.22 million; "Desperate Housewives," ABC, 16.09 million; "Grey's Anatomy," ABC, 15.28 million; "60 Minutes," CBS, 13.79 million; "Two and a Half Men," CBS, 13.63 million; NFL Football: Washington at Baltimore, NBC, 13.29 million; "Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of '08," ABC, 13.19 million.

I really like the show, but it's Simon Baker I tune in for. He has something special.

The show works for three reasons: Simon Baker, Simon Baker, Simon Baker. He is the glue that holds it all together. He is one hell of an actor and smokin' hot too. He plays Patrick Jane with just the right touch.

He was great, too, in the short-lived "Smith" series from last season. Actually, he's been a standout in whatever he's done, from movies to tv.

I had pretty much stopped watching primetime network tv, but this show has me back watching again. The Mentalist, Mad Men and The Unit are three shows I make sure I watch. The rest are mostly forgettable, especially all of those utterly inane "reality" shows. Bleah!!!!!

Baker, and the premise, are very good. Too bad the writing and supporting players are lame. It's too bad this show has these ratings, when much superior network fare like "House" and "Terminator" don't.

You do realize HOUSE is one of the top ten most watch scripted shows on TV right?
And the number one rated scripted show on its network?
Pay attention, spelling and correct facts count here....

I watched this show once - it looks okay - but it is a rip off of Psych...which I like better (it's more of a comedy though...so I guess it is a matter of preferences)

I've been watching it because of the recommendations I've read on-line. I've watched hardly anything other than politics (Olbermann, Daily Show, etc.) for about a year until the Mentalist.

I, too, find Simon Baker great to watch. I'm a little puzzled why he plays his character so light-hearted and why the plots include such gruesome murders. Even after all the current events they seem so cruel.

Baker, however, is a favorite of mine in whatever I've seen him in.

He doesn't play a light hearted person, he plays a person who is a studied professional with human nature/association with the psyche. I think he plays it well, a person who is always ahead of others is like the cat with the mouse. He is one high class cat!

I don't watch many shows but somehow I got hooked on this one. It's more entertaining than I thought it would be. Baker is a good fit for the lead role. He was too beautiful in "LA Confidential" but he looks great now and his style works well with the character. I like the supporting cast too, kind of fun and a little quirky.

Anyway, that's the end of my impromptu rah-rah post for "The Mentalist". I feel like a Stepford wife talking about spray starch. Sorry.

I refuse to watch this show! It's a total rip off of USA network's Psych which has been out for at least 2 years already. A funny mystery series where a private "psychic" investigator solves cases pretending to be psychic when he really has keen powers of observation and reasoning (with his best friend as a partner in his agency). This show is just a patent knock-off.

Totally disagree. The Mentalist is a drama focused on a brazen, practical man using his powers of observation to solve crimes which is only a supplement to his real goal of finding his family's murderer (and I don't think he works as a professional "private investigator"). On the other hand, Psych is a comedy following a guy, who is hapless and lovable--but basically a conman (He lies that he's "psychic". On the other show he doesn't)--who used his sense of observation to 1st get of of being arrested and then just for 'you know what' and giggles.

While they both prove to be fortunate nuisances to those they work with, I really only see one comparison in skills they have. Which is akin to saying Grey's Anatomy is a rip off of ER. Same line of work based on skills...that's about it.

That was kind of long, sorry. I love both shows, but see no rip off goin on.

I love this show. The only thing I watch on NBC is Life. Which means it will be cancelled shortly. Most network shows I get into get cancelled.

I wonder what Jeff Zucker, Mr. Whiz at NBC, has to say about this? The network model seems to be working for everyone but him. Yet, he fires 500 staffers because his (and Silverman's) lousy programming moves put NBC in the crapper. He then blames the economy, the business model, voodoo hexes or anything but himself for the failure.

Come on, GE. Isn't it time you guys woke up and smelled the coffee? There's nothing wrong with NBC that a boss who knows how to develop qualitity programming couldn't fix. Then again, maybe he'll come up with another "Fear Factor" to "change the way networks do business..." Or maybe Mr. Silverman will come up with a brainstorm hitting the slopes at Deer Valley. How about "All Jay, all The Time," a weeklong telethon to raise development money for the beleaguered overpaid duo hosted by Jay Leno?

Simon Baker is a solid actor. Watch him in the movie "Something New", he just has that something that makes him a great enjoyment in entertainment. Not to mention he is a fine human being.

He's a fine human being? Sweet. I've always liked him and it's refreshing when the nice guys catch a break in that business.
