CTA Ridership Highest Since 1992

High gas prices and free rides offered to senior citizens propelled CTA ridership so far in 2008 to its highest level in 16 years, officials said today.

More than 500 million rides were taken on CTA buses and trains so far this year, officials said. The last time the CTA provided more than a half-billion rides was in 1992, when total ridership for the year was 508 million rides.

The CTA is on pace to provide 528 million rides by year's end. It would be the highest level since 1991, when 540 million rides were taken.
