CHICAGO — President-elect Barack Obama said Thursday he's "absolutely certain" no one close to him was involved in an alleged plot by Gov. Rod Blagojevich to sell his former Senate seat to the highest bidder. At the same time, Obama announced an internal investigation into contacts his aides may have had with the embattled governor.

At a news conference to introduce former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle as his pick as secretary of health and human services, Obama said he has not spoken to investigators who accused Blagojevich this week of using his authority to name Obama's replacement to barter for campaign cash or a high-paying job inside or outside government. It was less clear whether investigators sought to have conversations with his aides.

"I have not been contacted by any federal officials," Obama said. "And we have not been interviewed by them."

Obama sought to end questions about whether members of his staff were involved in Blagojevich's alleged schemes by announcing that he has ordered an internal probe of all contacts between his transition staff and Blagojevich's staff. He promised to make the results public "in the next few days."

"What I'm absolutely certain about is that our office had no involvement in any dealmaking around my Senate seat," he said.

Obama said he was "appalled and disappointed as anybody" by the accusations that Blagojevich tried to profit from his authority to appoint his Senate successor. The governor has ignored calls for his resignation, including one that Obama repeated Thursday, and has declared his innocence. He retains the power to appoint Obama's replacement.

Daschle, whose selection was revealed weeks ago, will be Obama's point person in both designing an overhaul of the nation's health care system and shepherding it through Congress. Besides heading the Health and Human Services Department, Daschle also will lead a newly created White House Office of Health Reform.

Obama named Jeanne Lambrew, a Daschle collaborator and Clinton-era adviser, as the No. 2 person in the new White House office.

Obama called Thursday's news conference to highlight his health care plans and to lobby for congressional passage of short-term loans to rescue the U.S. auto industry. But all but one of the questions from reporters focused on the Illinois corruption scandal.

Nothing in the federal complaint suggests any wrongdoing by Obama or his staff. But the accusations against Blagojevich are an unwelcome distraction to the presidential transition, raising questions of whether Obama can follow through on his message of change and clean government.

The complaint, for example, says Blagojevich discussed having an unnamed Obama adviser help raise $10 million to $15 million for a nonprofit group that the governor wanted to create. The complaint does not say that a conversation with the Obama adviser took place, nor does it suggest that the Obama team took any action regarding Blagojevich's idea for a nonprofit.

Obama, for his part, declined to comment on the adviser's identity.

"I'm not really certain where the investigation is going forward," he said, adding the he would leave it to U.S. Attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald "to address those issues."

Obama said the charges against Blagojevich grew out of a culture that views politics "as a means of self-aggrandizement."

"That's exactly what has to change," he said.

Another decent, intelligent and capable choice by OUR President Elect. Daschle has always been a man of high integrity and depth of thought.

He is certainly inheriting one big smelly pile of crap, I am sorry to say. Let's hope he can clean it up.

Intelligent? He has a BA from South Dakota State. Impressive.

Yes, of course. You just insinuated that South Dakota State is populated entirely by morons. And I presume all intelligent people go to the Ivy League, right?

Get real.

Oh yeah, and Bush went to Yale...

I always liked Sen. Daschle as Leader and think he was a much better face for the Democratic party than the dour and possibly ethically challenged Harry Reid (whenever I listen to Reid, I think, "Of 50 Democrat Senators they couldn't do better than this guy?"). I am also reasonably sure that Daschle is qualified for the role for which President Elect Obama has tapped him.

However, for so important a position couldn't we have found someone other than a person who worked for a Lobbying firm with major healthcare clients, while technically not registering himself as a Lobbyist, and whose spouse is intimately involved in Hill Lobbying? Isn't this sending the wrong message, not only about Obama's commitment to his campaign pledges regarding Lobbyists but also about the influence that Daschle's former clients might have in this process?

Also, is the only person we could find to structure health care legislation and the nation's health care agenda, an individual who couldn't get re-elected to the Senate in his own home state while holding one of the most powerful jobs in Congress?

Ezra Klein of American Prospect writes a very impressive article about Daschle as HHS. You might want to do some digging

Looking at some of the comments, I have come to the realization that some of you are perfect examples of how broken the educational system in this country is. Seriously, they didn't teach you reading comprehension? It's sad

WHY DOES US HEALTH CARE COST SO MUCH ? please take a look at this link :

http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/tag/health-care/

-- the US spends nearly 40% more on health care than its GDP would predict

-- a lot of this is huge administrative overhead, in grat part because private health insurance companies have to screen so many people. It is estimated that excess spending on " health adminstration and insurance " accounts for as much as 21 % of the estimated total excess spending : about 150 billion in 2008, in theory more than enough to finance universal health care this year.

this is a great study done by Princeton economist Uwe E. Reinhard, in the Economix section of NYT.

My personal opinion is that US health care is an anacronism, a cruel barbarity that has no place in a civilised society. There are elderly people going blind or dying of diabetes because of a lack of health care

That article points out very nicely that the baby boomer "tsunami" is really chump change.

Aside from administrative costs, there are just a ton of other factors too. Americans tend to spend enormous sums on medical care right at the end of people's lives, when their chances are surviving are slim to none. But this is a moral issue.

Another more fundamental reason health care costs so much isthat Americans on the whole are so unhealthy, thanks in large part to our diets and food culture (think type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and many other diseases exacerbated by poor nutrition). But, this is a socio-economic and cultural issue that is unlikely to change much, unfortunately.

New technologies are often incredibly expensive. Many would argue that Americans are overmedicated too, and we all know how much prescription drugs cost.

I could go on.

Just as we shouldn't get caught up in singling out the baby boomer "tsunami", we shouldn't get caught up in scapegoating administrative costs, which are problematic but are only one of many problems.

Great pick from Obama because Obama knows he needs someone who can deal with congress and the health care industry. I would love a single payer system like they have in Europe but that just ain't gonna happen in the US any time soon.

To the tro//s Daschel was never a registered lobbyist like half of McCain's campaign staff. He did consulting for lobbyist firms which is just not the same. Lobbyists have direct contact with congress people to use their influence to get favors which Daschel did not do.

For the record even the right wing Newsmax says Daschel was not a registered lobbyist.

Daschle knows his way around Capitol Hill which will be extremely useful in drafting health care reform legislation -- another excellent choice, Mr. President-Elect

Good job, Obama. Tom Daschle is a good man and a bright spot in the emerging cabinet.

The cancer of current health-related monopolies of insurance companies, hospitals, lawyers and big pharma must be crushed by creating a strong low cost competition with the following measures:
- create gov low cost , transparent, computerized with a single card, insurance
- simply move the Medicaid money into that spot, thus stopping the flow of money to the insurance companies
- promote and distribute information about better tested generics in contrast to their overpriced untested equivalents
- strongly cap and regulate health-related law-suits (no more billion dollar lawsuits for a 4pack a day smoker).
- open up health related services, remove artificial barriers to practicing 90% of the health related procedures and create competition. $40 dollar ultrasound, $130 MRI, $30 dollar teeth cleaning, etc. Help start those small businesses.

Good comment : I think Tom Daschle should GO ALL THE WAY :once and for all go for a national health service. Send a mission to Europe to see how it is done - IT WORKS GREAT. I am an American living in Spain, and after years of going back and forth they have achieved a balance that works well for everyone :
--- unlimited health coverage for all, administered by the gvt. through the regional authorities.
--- medicines are free for people above 65, and for those under that age, cost very very little.
--- agreement with the pharmaceutical industry so that a lot of common medicines are sold as generic, at low cost
--- your health care does not depend of your company that employs you, you can go from job to job or be self - employed and it does not matter
--- medical school is initiated right after high school, is practically free at state universities, and graduates start as interns for a rather low salary and at state hospitals and then move upwards. Many doctors work both for the state health care AND their private office -- there is room for all levels of income and posibilities for the medical profession

sometimes you haver to wait a little for some treatment, but it is reasonable.

This would save a lot of money for the US, remove a COMPETITIVE DISADVANTAGE from the economy ( take a look at car makers in Detroit ) and give a

The US ain't ready for universal health care yet. I know alot of people who don't want it. We need to progress slowly, but deliberately on that. Believe me, as a Canuck, I would LOVE nothing but universal health care, I just don't think it is yet feasible here

About the last pargraph of the comment by nogimmicks: " open up health related services .... to help start those small businesses " :
very good ........ in Europe, where they have national health care, the state SUBCONTRACTS a lot of procedures such as those described - 40$ ultrasound, etc if it is advantageous cost - wise. The state hospitals have a certain amount of machinery and capacity for procedures and excess demand they subcontract to private small businesses ---- it works out well for both the state and the private sector.

You missed one problem with our current health care crisis... you and me... us....

Today about 1 dollar in 5 goes to treatment of type II diabetes, and another big chunck of money goes to the treatment of heart disease. While some of this may be genetic, the growth of these diseases are directly related to our lifestyles. We will have a bloated health care system as long as our obesity rates stay high.

Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, Rahm's brother, would have also been a great pick for this appointment. Hopefully he has some input on this ongoing narrative. His views are quite interesting both on specific scientific issues, and on the more general issues of solving the healthcare crisis in America.
