The highlight of last night's Daily Show was the moving send-off that Stewart gave career Fox News doormat Alan Colmes, who will be leaving the Hannity & Colmes show in January. Lamenting that he couldn't find the words to sum up what Alan Colmes meant to him, host Jon Stewart was ably aided by rock legends Daryl Hall and John Oates, who paid tribute to Colmes through a re-written version of their classic song, "She's Gone." Of Colmes, they sang, "You're the only non-douchebag on that show!" Aye, verily.

UPDATE: Colmes' co-host Sean Hannity responded to Stewart (and Hall, and Oates!) in a statement today: "I was actually thinking of Jon [Stewart] as a co-host but I needed someone who could be smart and funny without 50 writers and two has-been rockers who are badly in need of Botox."

[WATCH.]

Lyrics:

Anytime you need a token liberal
Nothin' but a body to fill a chair
The barest shadow of a person
Alan Colmes is always there.

But all those years of non-existence
Can really run a person down.
Now he's leaving Hannity forever
Alan, please don't go!
You're the only non-douchebag on that show
He's gone. Bye bye,
Oh why
He was the Tango to his cash
And he's gone.
Oh why
To the extent
That I hadn't noticed he was there
But he's gone.
Oh why
What went wrong?
He's gone. Bye bye
Oh why?
He was the Laurel to his Hardy
He's gone
To spend
More time
Not being seen with his family
He's gone
What went wrong?

Smart and funny. Two things Hannity has never been.

Hannity is a bullying creep. He is clever, but not intelligent. His is a particular modern intelligence. In the old days he would have been avoided by all who knew him. Now he is a big wheel on the teevee machine. Squint and look at him sort of sideways and you will see his genetic code has been shaped by being the butcher's boy.

It's one thing to have writers, it's another to actually be able to READ the jokes.

Yeah.. and it's a good thing to recognize what is funny and what is not. That takes a funny bone and Hannity aint got one.

I'd like to see Hannity and Jon Stewart face off--live, and decibels don't count.

(Shhhh, don't tell Hannity what happened to Tucker Carlson.)

Save Journalism, Save America - google "Fix News Now"

... should be called "Fix Fox News Now" or 'Hush Rush".

hey, i'm all for pundit scorecards... but the likes of CeaseSpin (and similar Orwellian pursuits) are more interested in quieting opposition, than pushing for a return of [govt regulated] excellence in journalism.

The internet is already saving journalism... from itself.

I want to acknowledge Daryl's and John's contribution to this shining moment in the annals of biting satire. Likewise to Jon Stewart & his able gang.
I first heard these two guys singing on underground FM out of Philadelphia on a program hosted by Bill Figgenshue (a legend in FM broadcasting)
The song was : "Fall in Philadelphia". It was, and I remain admirers of their body of work.
Ah, 36 years ago. My, my. Where does the time go?

There you go again, Hannity, proclaiming yourself to be more than what you are...an unintelligent, high school grad right wing nit wit. He stating he was considering Stewart to co-host on is show?? It was definitely a slam to Stewart. Pay backs are a bee-yotch, Hannity, and I'm sure Stewart will respond back.

The world may be in serious trouble, but intelligent good humor is here to stay which will make it easier to get through these tough times.

Wow - I didn't think I'd ever hear Hannity admit that Jon Stewart is both smart and funny. I didn't think he'd be able to recognize either wit or intelligence if it hit him smack in the face... just goes to show one shouldn't judge a book by the lack of written words.

"I was actually thinking of Jon [Stewart] as a co-host . . . "

Yeah, and I was thinking of asking Bob Vila to come clean my windows.

The only circumstance in which Jon Stewart might share a camera with a guy like Hannity is to show Hannity's demographic what happens when puerile anger meets critical thinking delivered with elegant wit. Stewart has more than good writing going for him. He's "quick on his feet," which is on display all the more when interviewing people like William Kristol, Rudy Giuliani, and John McCain, whom he doesn't need to try to embarrass while debunking their spin.

Here's a thought, Sean. Get a pair. Screw up some of that TV courage, and ask Jon Stewart -- or James Carville, or Paul Begala, or Joy Behar, or any one of a dozen other bright, confident candidates -- to appear not as guests, but as guest-hosts for a week at a time, without limiting their time or closing their mics.

Then we'll see how "smart and funny" actually works out for you.

It's not uncommon for a Lib to bail. The battered position of a Lib an only take it for so long. A move to France would be good, maybe even China or Russia. Really no room for his kind here. It was just a matter of time.

Is there an actual thought here?

Can't say Alan Colmes was much of a counterweight to Hannity . . . but "bail?" Colmes stuck w/ the format for years, and the timing of his decision coincides with a number of circumstances, including a sea change in political climate and the increasingly threadbare content of the program. Colmes probably still has a shot at some legitimacy; gonna be interesting to see what will happen to Hannity when Murdoch starts throwing some of these guys under the bus.

Actually, there is a point in there... although i think Scales was missing it.

Liberals really should move to China or Russia... there are some very important issues facing those countries which liberals should apply their energies and skills: human & civil rights abuses, no freedom of speech, inequitable distribution of wealth, poor healthcare, corporate cronyism, government cronyism, pollution, journalists being kjlled... the list goes on ad infinum...

Liberals have done a wonderful job here in America. America collectively thanks you. Now your services are needed across the pond... to help 'equalize' the distribution of civil liberties around the world.

God Speed to you all.

That's the difference between them - there aren't enough writers on the planet to make Hannity smart and funny.
